Dailey Enterprizes Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 I wasn't sure which forum this should go in, but since I'm asking a question, eh you know. Anyway, I was thinking about this whenever I was reading ACE's "Rollercoaster" and I began to think that TPR should have it's own magazine. I mean, Robb already posts great trip reports with plenty of pictures, why not make it into a magazine. So I guess I'm asking you (Robb) if you would consider making a magazine?
ParkTrips Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Something tells me they wouldn't have enough time...
SharkTums Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 It's something we've been talking about more lately, but like ParkTrips said...finding time to put it together is difficult!
rollermonkey Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Regardless of anyone's opinions of ACE or the ECC, the magazines are pretty nice, but with the internet, usually they are borderline to completely out-of-date by the time anyone gets them. Additionally, Rollercoaster has a decent sized staff of people working to put that out and they have a tough time making deadline for even a quarterly publication. Nobody is paying Robb and Elissa to maintain this website, and it is free to use it. With this format lots of the content is maintained by us, the user, in the form of PTR's and now videos. R+E Sell videos to help support the cost of bandwidth, but no one forces you to buy videos so you can use the site. For R+E: If you do ever decide to start an old fashioned print periodical, whatever the format, I'd be glad to help! Long Live TPR!
Wes Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Could I write a monthly Op-Ed piece called "Here's Why I'm Better Than You" ?
Meteornotes Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 ^I'd get a lifetime subscription as long as that is in every issue! dt
TheGreatOne Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 It would be tough considering production costs, then trying to get advertising. No theme park magazine would do well in "mainstream", and specialty magazines are usually too costly to produce. ACE and ECC's work because it's included in club prices, and therefore, they can afford to make them.
Dailey Enterprizes Posted February 11, 2006 Author Posted February 11, 2006 For R+E: If you do ever decide to start an old fashioned print periodical, whatever the format, I'd be glad to help! Long Live TPR! I was thinking the same thing, what if we got a bunch of TPR peeps to help put it together.
saturday97 Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Many niche publications are going totally online. You could add a few feature artices to this site.
robbalvey Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Nobody is paying Robb and Elissa to maintain this website, and it is free to use it. With this format lots of the content is maintained by us, the user, in the form of PTR's and now videos. I think this is really the key reason why we wouldn't do a print magazine. For one, as it's been said, the information would be outdated before it gets in your hands. And secondly, I'd rather spend the time organizing all the great information we have on this site which has been posted by all of you, making all that content more accessible, than figuring out a way to duplicate the same efforts in other medium. Now if anyone wants to help us do that, I'm all ears! --Robb "All you need is some mad Front Page skillz!" Alvey
Shockwave Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Seeing how the website is pretty much all-consuming at the moment, a magazine would take a lot of effort on top. Plus the website can be updated instantly. I'd actually love to see a TPR Yearbook, like the ones that kids get from high school.
CoasterCrazy Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 I would also like to see a TPR Yearbook! I don't think a TPR magazine is necessary since you can get news to people faster through the internet.
ParkTrips Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Now if anyone wants to help us do that, I'm all ears! --Robb "All you need is some mad Front Page skillz!" Alvey You know I'd help. But I gots Dreamweaver, fool! - Joe
Chris Benvenuto Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 Do something like the Virginia Quarterly Review. It's a magazine compiled with short stories that have a magazine released every season. generally, what I'm saying (robb or elissa): Is that there's a comprised staff, who runs it and takes the problem off of both of your hands. Like a forum member staff running the mag. And generally there is one issue for each season, One for Spring, One for Summer, One for Fall and One for Winter. 4 issues, a 40 dollar subscription. 10 Dollars a issue, once every season. you could compile info for the off season shortly after the Fall issue comes out. apply the same with the other seasons. Get my point? Do as I say and you'll get kisses (Elissa only) (Praise for Robb) Kisses Elissa, Praise for Robb. Take your time to think about it. And do an annoucement with your conclusion! Chris " MY IDEA OWNS YOU BOTH j/k" B EDIT: BTW, the VQR cost something like 80 Dollars, 20 bucks for each issue. But we could have the some subscription plans as the VQR does, like 80$ for 2 years, 120$ for 3 years. You get my point right?
SonOfBeastSucks Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 I'd actually love to see a TPR Yearbook, like the ones that kids get from high school. That is a great idea!
coasterdude5 Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 They could always do an online magazine.
larrygator Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 A better idea and less timing consuming for R&E might be to set up a separate area on the site for well written and coherent articles by the members. Of course, well written and coherent would prohibit many on this site from submitting anything or force better use of grammar. R&E could accept submissions, so that it doesn't become 4,000 rambling senseless unreadable pieces of prattle. No timetables for new articles, just whenever R&E see a good submission they post it. In reality, the cost of publishing a glossy magazine is very expensive. Printing and mailing 2,000 issues would be "at least" $25,000-$50,000 per issue is done properly.
robbalvey Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 These are all GREAT ideas! And we will likely act on some of then, but the first thing I want to do is better organize our "Park Photos" index pages to make finding trip reports, updates, and videos easier: http://www.themeparkreview.com/photos/index.htm You can see that so far I've gotten up to the letter "F" but there is a long way left to go! If you have suggestions or would like to help us "convert" from the old style to the new, please let me know! We'll always accept cheap labor! (hell, and maybe we can repay you with a DVD or two) --Robb
larrygator Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 I'm 38 and past the "free labor" stage in life. I consult now. Actually I'm in idiot when it comes to technology, and have no technical skills. However, since I work in advertising I know a little about the publishing business.
Meteornotes Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 Larry makes an excellent suggestion about articles. Perhaps a really good TR/detailed park article could be placed on a special section of the site. Maybe moving it off the forum to a different area. I like this idea... dt
rollermonkey Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 Er, hasn't the DVD been the video yearbook? Why would an online magazine (huh?) be different or better than the site as it is now with Robb's planned improvements? Just curious, as these ideas, while very good, require people to put a lot of time into them to make them worthwhile. I know Robb's pretty busy with work and all the globetrotting he does for work and for his hobby.
saturday97 Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 I think a podcast would be great. You could even do a video podcast as a trailer for the DVDs.
BarryH Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 I was an Editor for a newsletter/magazine thingie for a club in college and I can say it's a lot of work! The hardest part is asking (and sometimes begging) people to contribute. Before you try to recruit me to do a TPR magazine, I don't have much desire to do the Editor duty of a newsletter or magazine again. It was good at the time, but it's time to move on to do other things. Honestly, what would be the point of a TPR magazine? The website has great information and people post TRs all the time here. Now if there were a TPR swimsuit issue...
saturday97 Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 A TPR swimsuit issue sounds disturbing...
the sound Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 ^ Wierded Out! I would like to see the "TPR awards" By this, i mean awards for people in the forums, similar to what Coasterforce did, and also awards for rollercoasters, like Coasterbuzz. Just an idea, though.
