Questionable coaster elements

Recommended Posts

Oh how I love the "random rollercoaster" function of RCDB! Have we seen this one?

Where is that abomination?

It is in Mexico. Sadly it's not running as of earlier this year, I'd totally ride it.

Sorry a bit OT but I just have to leave this one here....

I'm ashamed to even share the same continent as that hunk of junk.

Maverick is a good exception to this rule, but a lot of people like to complain about it too for some reason.

I'm not a fan of Maverick, but its not because of strong g-forces, its because of the abrupt and poor transitions that bash ones head against the restraints violently. It's sad in this day and age that riders have to remove earrings to ride a modern rollercoaster in one of the world's premier theme parks.

^ They fixed the restraints this year to have soft padded vests. Personally, one of Maverick's best elements is the extremely snappy transitions and now you don't have to ride defensively.

Add Galaxyland's Mindbender to the list of coasters people complain about as well. The ride is 30 years old, but runs as smooth possibly smoother, than any b&m I've done, and packs a massive punch. In many ways I'd say it feels very similar to the BTR clones, maybe even a little more intense than BTR, but a little less "relentless" (more time to catch your breath between elements). Unfortunately, I've heard many people mistake the snappy transitions/strong laterals for roughness.

Personally love both BTR clones & the Edmonton Mindbender, because they've got that glass smooth feeling while still being able to blow you away every time you ride.

There is NO way in the world I would EVER get on that coaster. This photo makes it look even worse than before. Seriously... There is not enough money, or vodka in the world to get me on that thing...

Ride looks absolutely horrible, however, I have to give them some sort of credit for being a bit "innovative" and building an invert instead of a "traditional" coaster

^ Thank you! I hate when people say snappy transitions "are too rough." Poorly thought out ones, sure, but a quick snap is a great thrill in a lot of rides! (Like old school invert cobra rolls). The thing I dislike about new B&Ms is that the ONLY force you feel on them is downward positive gs, and occasionally a zero g element. When used properly, lateral gs are responsible for some of the best moments in coasters!

Maverick consistently has the longest line at CP every time I go. I think that says a lot.

I also don't get why some peoples standard of "good ride" apparently means you should be able to limp body without feeling any forces. When I was a kid, riding defensively was the point of roller coasters! It was something to brag about when you got off. A lot of the things people complain about (Alpengeist cobra roll, raptor final breaks) are a fun thrill with no pain if you just hold on to the provided handels. The point of "no hands" is to show you're brave enough to "take whatever comes without fear," yet then people decide to complain when God forbid the ride throws a force at you that you were instructed to brace for but didn't? And that's the rides fault?

I personally really disagree with the notion that U.S coasters are "dumbed down", because if that's so, then there would be no way Skyrush, I305 and F325 would have been built.

^ I don't believe that was the claim I was making. I haven't been on Fury, but of course I consider i305 intense. (Even after the drop mod). What I was talking about were people who complain about anything other than positive downward g force (such as the quick snaps on maverick) as being "too rough," where I consider those moments as "half the point" of riding. Maverick is a very smooth ride, just intense. Compare that to oh say Mean streak, which is and insanely rough ride despite it not really being forceful at all.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

You get a lot of snaps on I305 too, but I distinctly remember that it unfortunatley caused some moments of headbanging on Maverick. Not too bad though.

?

I don't think lateral G's are ever used properly when used in conjunction with OSTRs. That's what wooden coasters are for and why I love them.

That track looks vaguely similar to the legendary Orphan Rocker, which also classifies for this thread imo... anyone think this was done by the same company, whoever it was?

And regarding that POV... ow.

Edit: O.R. was built by this guy apparently: http://www.parkz.com.au/forums/topic/2747-orphan-rocker/?do=findComment&comment=86281
