^Georgia is the SEC's version of Notre Dame. ALWAYS highly ranked in the preseason, but ALWAYS find a way to end the year in the middle of the pack.

^That certainly seems to be the case in recent years and while I think 6 is a little high for them right now but if Murray can have a consistent season they may stay in the top 10 throughout the season.

Both Games this week with A&M and Missouri should be interesting. Florida and Georgia both struggled a bit in their openers to inferior programs and going on the road should be a huge test for both teams. I don't know a thing about Missouri football but I have a feeling that they may struggle a little with Georgia physically up front, but we'll see.

Yep. I'd toss Michigan in that group as well. Easily three of the biggest perennial underachievers. I mean, seriously. Michigan and Georgia have some of the biggest fanbases in college football, yet somehow find a way to be a doormat for their neighboring conference mates each and every year. How does this happen? Honestly, I'm confused. (Although, admittedly UGA got screwed by the BCS at least once in the last decade)

It must be a conspiracy involving Herchel Walker. I think he pulls some strings to actually have UGA fail. That way, he remains their biggest hero for decades. Same for Desmond Howard now.

Might as well go ahead and include Florida State and Oklahoma here recently as well. How many years in a row have either of those two teams been ranked in the preseason top 15 only to lose to a Texas Tech, Wake Forest, Virginia or Iowa State or someone like that. Seems like it happens just about every year.

I think Georgia benefits from being the most consistent program in the Eastern division over the last decade...everyone just assumes they must be good because they come from the mighty SEC and won their division (which, if you take away Tim Tebow, has not been that strong over the last decade). Which basically means they become LSU and Alabama's bitch when it matters.

Virginia Tech's entrance is still the best in college football. That's all the credit I'll give 'em.

As I told you last night, the place was rockin. It sort of reminded me of seeing LSU play in the dome a few years ago - the intensity of SEC fans, but without being complete dicks. They were crazy about their team. I was shocked about how nice the VT fans were. I have all the respect in the world for that program now, and am glad I got to see Lane at night. Blacksburg was a typically cool little college town. I think I'll make that trip every time we play up there now, it was awesome all-around, making the end result easier to swallow. (plus the matchup is always close and important)

Easily the best fans in the ACC.

oh, don't forget that UGA racks up 4 and 5 stars like nothing every year, leading to high expectations, but many of them end up with criminal troubles (and some, like Crowell, get kicked off the team). UGA also brings in $70MM a year with football alone, while the school's endowment is roughly half a billion: they are a football school, no matter how much they have improved in academics.

I see them picking up a couple losses this year - winner of the SC game will determine who goes to Atlanta

UGA was rated most disappointing team of the decade (or something like that) with all the talent they've had and couldn't win the championship.

It's always interesting to visit Athens for me strictly because of the 80's music scene that came from there (ie R.E.M., B-52's, amongst others like the db's, Dreams So Real, etc.) and the 40 Watt.

I dig your style Texas A&M, might not be the most truthful billboard ever (last I checked Vanderbilt was a pretty decent academic institution), but it's the effort that counts!

Had a great time at the TN/NC State game even though the score got a bit lopsided by the end. Apparently somebody fell over the railing and died, but we didn't see it at all.

GA Tech / VA Tech was great, although GA Tech had no business losing that game. Same question here - is GA Tech under-rated this year, or is VA Tech once again over-rated?

Too bad that just based on "Major Infractions Cases" Texas A&M would be the dirtiest (well, tied with Auburn) program in the SEC with seven such cases. SMU and Arizona State are the all time leaders with 8 cases each.

Is there such thing as a "clean" program anymore? There's too many shady people (booth school boosters and outside sources) trying to leech off of star football and basketball players, it is almost a given that someone is directly or indirectly (through family/friends) giving benefits to a player.

If they ever attempted to do something about the cheating in AAU basketball leagues, there wouldn't be many programs left without forfeited wins and championships.

I thought GT played pretty well the other night - they contained the QB who gave them the most fits last year, limiting his impact, and did ok on offense versus a pretty good defense. Outside blocking sucks (so they couldn't break anything on the perimeter), and we still cannot defend a damn slant route to save our lives. Scheming continues to overcome talent gaps at Tech, as was seen with the better execution as the game went on.

I'm ok taking the best team in the division to OT at their place. We will do well against lesser talent, though we probably just aren't championship-caliber, and 8-9 wins should be expected

blah blah blah quit trying to justify it. I'm sure there are dozens of clean programs that would take offense to that.

^Yeah, the ones without anybody with a future in the NFL or NBA.

I'm not justifying it. I am just being realistic. Star athletes are being approached by unscrupulous individuals from the second they are identified as a potential star, starting as early as middle school. It starts with all those AAU teams, 7-on-7 football teams, camps they attend, and so on that are all very shady and only gets worse from there. Boosters who want glory (see Nevin Shapiro), agents or wannabe agents who want new clients (see Reggie Bush/O.J. Mayo), and so on.

The NCAA needs to update its rulebook to account for the mess that is "amateur" football and basketball.

I love how both of your examples are from USC haha, just kidding. I would say that there are plenty of "clean" programs left out there but the rules these days on recruiting through social media and off season contact and other things are getting a little ridiculous. I know Kentucky self reported a few secondary violations this year in football and basketball that were insane.

"A third violation came when Joker Phillips (head football coach) got a text from a number he didn’t recognize and texted back “who is this sorry” -- only to find out it was a 2012 recruit. Phillips reported himself"

Really? Responding to a text from an unknown sender is a secondary violation?

One of Kentucky's assistant basketball coaches, Rod Strickland, had to sit our two days of practice last year for this self-reported violation that is clearly fully of malicious intent to gain a competitive advantage......

In compliance officer Sandy Bell’s report, the athlete said he came to meet with head coach John Calipari, but he was busy with a visitor, so he stopped by Strickland’s office. Strickland was breaking down film, which he is allowed to do, and the player asked him a question about something on the film. Strickland answered and offered some advice on how to better handle a certain play. Strickland was issued a “letter of admonishment” and was prohibited from attending practice for two days. UK compliance agreed to address the related NCAA bylaw in the March compliance meeting with coaches and to educate student-athletes and staff members on the rule.

So a player walks by a coaches office, watches film for a few minutes while waiting to meet with the head coach, the assistant coach verbally "coaches" him, and it's a secondary violation? That used to be called getting better, now it's called a secondary violation.

My point is I don't think every team in the country is paying money under the table to players for commitments (who would be dumb enough to get away that kind of thing these days?), but I do think that that there are plenty of teams that are constantly trying to gain a competitive edge whether it is illegal or not.

I personally still think that the NCAA will not govern major college basketball and football within my lifetime, but we'll see.

^That is absolutely unbelievable. I guess we committed secondary violations at every Saturday walk through when the strength staff would bring in not only bagels with multiple topping but cereal with, wait for it, MILK! Oh the humanity, a program provided player with cereal and milk prior to an early morning walk through.

At least the NCAA got something right in that article.

Proposal 2011-79 would allow an institution to pay expenses for the entire team to be with a teammate after a death or life-threatening incident.

How bout them razorbacks?

Yeah I'm not gonna say that wasn't a surprising outcome but Arkansas is in total disarray right now with their off season fiasco. John L. Smith is the last person I would want to take over my program.

P.S. Metlife Field sucks for college football.

I guess people in NYC just don't care about college football, which is understandable.

The biggest shocker for me this weekend was Auburn getting crushed by Miss. State. I watched that Auburn Clemson game week one and thought both looked liked legit top 15 teams, but never saw an 18 point beatemdown coming. Then again Miss. State was a team that i thought last year was going to take a huge step forward and never did, so maybe this is their year (to finish 3 in the west behind LSU and Bama).

Well, both Texas A&M and Missouri proved that they can play in the SEC...for one half.

Big game in Knoxville this weekend and Game Day will actually be there now thanks to Arkansas' collapse.
