Angry_Gumball Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 (edited) It's already been clarified about the ad I questioned earlier and this was the first I actually really saw it on TPR so it had me wondering whether if this was something being tested out or if my computer was acting strange and throwing in popups wherever. SharkTums Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Something being tested. And is it really THAT distracting!?!?
ernierocker Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I have been on the site all day and have only noticed it twice. This was the second time because it was just pointed out.
Angry_Gumball Posted August 25, 2011 Author Posted August 25, 2011 Something being tested. And is it really THAT distracting!?!? When I first got on TPR, I noticed the white box immediately, It was probably more shocking at first as I was thinking "What was that?" But I guess it isn't so bad once I've scrolled down the page a bit to see what topics to check out.

We've only recently, yesterday, added them to the forum.
SharkTums Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 ^^Yeah, I mean, it's: - Not a popup - Doesn't follow you down the page - Doesn't appear between posts - Doesn't require a click to proceed I'm on a lot of sites that are MUCH worse.
Angry_Gumball Posted August 25, 2011 Author Posted August 25, 2011 You guys have a good point... Not that I want to knock on other sites but Screamscape's got it rough with its ads sometimes...some happen to be agressive and don't like to be closed out until you actually go through the ad or force quit your browser entirely.
robbalvey Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I fought doing ads on TPR for a very, very long time. We started testing out these back in May and I was actually very happy with the company, their philosophy, and more important that the ads didn't impact the site hardly at all. We've slowly been rolling them out to different sections of the site. As much as I've wanted to stray away from them for years, the harsh realities of how much the site costs to run is catching up with me. And what I realize is that I wasn't "Anti-Ad" I was "Anti-Obnoxious-Ad", and these I think fit TPR's personality just fine.
robbalvey Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 (edited) ^ Yes. They aren't a big enough deal to remove them for Club TPR Members. Seriously, if anyone REALLY takes that big of an issue with, I honestly encourage you to not visit Theme Park Review anymore. Edited August 25, 2011 by robbalvey
PeoplemoverMatt Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Not being a Club TPR member, I was simply curious. For me, it's not that I take issue with the ads. It's more of I've known your anti-ad stance for close to a decade now, and while I know you don't make changes like this suddenly, finding out about it sparked a couple curiosities. That's all. I do hope they help with the site costs as you would want them to.
Coaster Cow Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I personally like how my browser's standard window blocks them out completely.
sspaz1000 Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Yes, I know IE 8 sucks horribly, only because I'm on my work computer, and can't use another browser I noticed the ad loads on the right, where it is on every other browser, then it comes to the left once the page finishes loading and covers up the TPR park index link. I'm sure it's just because IE 8 is a piece of crap. But I thought I'd mention it.
dragonskeep Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I have mentioned it to friends many times that I was surprised the site had no ads. If it helps us get great content then fine. I will admit that I notice it often but I guess thats the idea, it's not distracting just not what I am used to seeing. We all deal with way worse on other sites. I have no problem with people benefiting from their hard work either.
larrygator Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 This is a new feature. It will be visible for each of your posts. If your post is not a PTR ignore it. But if your post is a PTR this makes it easier to submit a request for your PTR to be considered for inclusion in the Park Index under "Member Trip Reports". However, criteria will not change for inclusion into the Park Index, we are still limited the number of Member Trip Reports per park.
Wes Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 For some reason, it's actually impossible to click the ad on the forums. The ones on the park index work fine, but the forum one seems like there is no link. (??)
SharkTums Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 ^It's something with Macs. I can click on the forum just fine, but I think Robb said Safari was having weird issues.

I do hope they help with the site costs as you would want them to. But it's not sudden. We've been testing out the ads since the end of April in the Park Index and CoasterTube. In fact there have been threads about them posted to the forum when those ads went live too. And yes, I've had an anti-ad stance for years, but what I've learned recently are the following: 1. The more the site grows, the more it costs to run. I've sunk literally thousands and thousands of our own dollars into this over the years, and we have to try to re-coup some of that. 2. What I've learned is that I'm more "Anti-Obnoxious Ads", which I don't find this one little ad obnoxious at all. This isn't "new" to TPR. We've had ads on the site for four months now. robbalvey Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 ^^& ^Same here on my Mac. Yeah, working on it. We just put it on the forums about 12 hours ago, so give us some time to work out a few of the bugs with it.
RaptorBoyASU Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 I also can't click on the ad. I'm on Windows Vista using Firefox 3.6.2 I'm very glad the ads aren't obnoxious and actually focused on things I may be interested in.
XYZ Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 I just noticed that ad during this thread. Thanks Robb for not destroying TPR with obnoxious "Screamscape" Ads.
SoCalCoasters Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 The only thing about these changes is the negative impact it has on the screen size for the iPads. There is now a large black bar on the side where the ad isn't. This isn't a big deal however, and I just wanted to point it out.
XYZ Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Robb, I am having a problem that whenever I go to new page on this website, I always have to scroll to the right because the left black banner has enlarged and the ad is on the upper left when it's supposed to be on the upper right. I didn't notice this yesterday, and this is coming from my PC, so is this a problem on my side or is there a probelm on your side? EDIT: I switched off compatibility mode on my PC and the problem went away!
