Photo TR: D23's Destination D: Walt Disney World 40th

I'll take 100 wands, hats, or stones before that stupid ass cake makeover. Honestly, going with that cake was the worst decision in the history of bad decisions. It was like covering the Eiffel Tower or the Golden Gate Bridge with Grandma's table cloth for a year. It still makes me cringe.

Some of these pictures bring back memories from when I visited when I was growing up, my mother always made sure to visit at least twice a year since I was six. The first visit I remember was 1976 on the 4th of July, the Bicentennial. It was so packed with people and literally butt to butt waiting for the monorail, my brother had to put me on his shoulders because I was getting crushed by the crowds. What a memory. Love this Photo TR, thanks for posting it.

Fun fact: Mainstreet's facilities were built as whole buildings with facades added later to divide each "store." In reality, all of the stores are contained in one building on each of the two sides of Mainstreet.

The wonderful world of Walt Disney World Ephemera actually sounds really interesting….I would actually be really interested in seeing the changes over the years.

Great look back a Disney World, I would really have loved to be there!

Will you be posting more of the Trivia?

Thanks,

Zachary

Adam, you've really outdone yourself on this one! There's just SO many memories associated with this update.

Never got to see it operate... Just watched the lagoon sit unused for years.

You missed out on what I still consider to be the greatest Disney ride ever! I'm sure you're probably familiar with this site, but for those who may not be, check out 20kride.com.

- Loved the Mission to Mars pic! My brother was notorious for needing to go to the bathroom each time we "landed" on Mars. My mom would have to walk him out the exit doors and ruin the whole effect for everyone.

- And speaking of which, you copied that MTM pic for this quote: "Rollercoaster Tycoon Version 0.15B"

I've actually been searching for a good pic of this at Epcot for years now. I really wish I had video of it too! I should have my name in the RCT credits for "beta testing" then!

Am I the only one that misses the SeaCabs?

No. You have company. And by the way, I LOVED that construction pic of the tank!!

- Thank you, thank you, thank you for that old Contemporary game room pic!!

- Oh snap! The Kids of the Kingdom.....Mom just HAD to see them every time we were there.

- Before it was called "The Disney Inn," I'm thinking it was named something else, but I'm drawing a blank. We stayed there several times when it was basically used as a golf resort.

- MONORAIL CONSTRUCTION FTW.

Really awesome stuff, Adam. Ton of memories flooding back. I never cared for If You Had Wings, but I always liked the signage....I was weird.

That pic of Centorium has me perplexed. I really don't recall it being two levels. Amazing what one can forget.

I too loved the Seacabs. What a great way to introduce the audience to a great aquarium.

So later in the day, we sat in on one of my favorite panels of the event...

DSC05420.JPG.9275cc2fe2514449fddf7ea444ed43ec.JPG

Hosted by Jason Surrell, Alex Wright and Jason Grandt, the Imagineers focused on the subtle and not-so-subtle aspects of the Disney Detail left by the Imagineers.

So Jason Grandt told us this very neat story about how he implanted a shape he loved from Tomorrowland into Epcot. See the banner?

DSC05457.JPG.c93ccf6f1c08d14e8fd6bf50a7ef7000.JPG

Well over at the Tomorrowland Transit Authority, there is a stairwell that leads up to the Astro Orbiter. The stairwell has steps with a very distinct shape (see the right hand image).

DSC05459.JPG.10fe62088655e6c95e31dddbde29a5ee.JPG

When designing the banner, Jason added this shape into the image as a fun little tribute to his favorite steps.

True story, bro.

Anyone ever see this Haunted Mansion artwork before?

Notice the Hatbox Ghost in the role of the Grim Reaper.

DSC05468.JPG.9d54355deb5bc9bf89c9b4c4ea31e3e1.JPG

You wouldn't believe how much thought went into the planning and design of the Pirates League at the Magic Kingdom.

DSC05469.JPG.fbf14a6cadb5d64f1aa028a4f1c0e518.JPG

DSC05472.JPG.2c34ab51be763204cedb2a66d56a04f5.JPG

DSC05474.JPG.b336475b72fb91e7bcc49d11e6452f65.JPG

Also something I didn't realize, but a lot of the thought went into the Pirate Chess Stalemate scene in the queue.

DSC05475.JPG.195d08aafa2fe3595ef55f9b1d4582be.JPG

When refurbishing the attraction, the chess pieces were to be put back into the exact same stalemate position they were in when the attraction first debuted. This card was found in the archives as an instruction to the original designers on where to place the pieces when first building the ride.

DSC05477.JPG.0b55e552989de560818dcd711effd49c.JPG

A fun gem to be found in Pizzafari at Animal Kingdom.

DSC05479.JPG.f7bccd155f907bde6c7b781a5a20fbc5.JPG

As I think I've mentioned before, there is a ton of detail thrown into the new Mickey meet & greet at the Magic Kingdom.

DSC05481.JPG.d1bea70fd18fa6cfb9ed07e39f49b5b6.JPG

A little tribute here that I hadn't noticed in person before.

DSC05482.JPG.7ca850fb0c139af9e57b399f094f9d55.JPG

Jason Grandt drew this art as a child and it was actually used in the meet & greet!

And the last part of the Destination D: Walt Disney World 40th event? Magic Journeys, a concert with Richard Sherman and the Cast Member group, Encore!

DSC05686.JPG.21eb7a035195df9efc558f7c88f3b013.JPG

The show started off with some songs from an entertainer who had been performing for Disney since Walt Disney World first opened.

DSC05701.JPG.81b195e0e643f9d75736f71161bfd135.JPG

Then the Kids of the Kingdom performers that were still cast members came out on stage to do one of their original routines.

The Mainstreet Marching Band came out next to perform.

DSC05720.JPG.796ff82877138d0d28a5a4c91baabaff.JPG

Here we go!

DSC05729.JPG.b24b41fd648cf2adb59426f130743dfb.JPG

You really can tell Richard Sherman loves what he does, and is truly fond of the work he and his brother have done for Disney over the last four decades.

DSC05734.JPG.892f190d3577c78c34a0d5f379086645.JPG

DSC05736.JPG.83f33259c2b97b2e072c96668388d0c6.JPG

I'm not sure if anyone else there noticed, but Richard Sherman was wearing an Orange Bird pin on his lapel.

DSC05739.JPG.0b9fc2ed7dde291a5060ca74d2b334f2.JPG

Then something happened that no one in the audience expected. The Dreamfinder came out, with Figment in is arms.

Get ready for a Dreamfinder photo overload. Indulge a nostalgic fan, won't you?

DSC05761.JPG.969fa063b294df6c5b6e155c0f708802.JPG

Then, the Dreamfinder asked Richard Sherman to sing One Little Spark for him.

DSC05765.JPG.f43a6d868332064db6040c8ec0756770.JPG

To which he soon joined in.

DSC05773.JPG.20e62fcbfaf4d554e0c6fce548b53594.JPG

The Dreamfinder then led a sing-along of One Little Spark. I'm pretty sure half of the audience couldn't sing, as they were too busy crying.

Seriously, this was a very emotional moment for masses.

DSC05774.JPG.69b438c1adbdb6d079b18159e279f8d5.JPG

DSC05792.JPG.0c923510fa6f1d0b2e4a17d4febea2db.JPG

A few more long-time cast members came out to sing Golden Dreams to the audience.

DSC05795.JPG.740907b2e26c366b8e10bbb4660cc81f.JPG

Then Encore! came out to perform a medley of music from Epcot's history.

DSC05799.JPG.9769452a63bb9db1046f9c60b13dc6db.JPG

It really was an amazing show!

Once again, these photos are great- After recently acquiring a copy of E-Ticket featuring Space Mountain (StarPorts 75 and 77) and seeing all the great historical stuff makes me want to bust out the wallet and raid e-bay.

These pics just pushed me a little bit further towards doing so.

(And MCJaco- you're right. He's definitley put on as many pounds as there are years at EPCOT!)
