stingrock23 Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 The first of my 10 beers around the world, Hollandia. I got a box of 10 beers about a month ago and finally opened it. Not bad, pretty smooth actually.
mcjaco Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 The best part about both of these, the Arrogant Bastard sauce. Otherwise, meh. I also sampled a Stone Levi....levi....levi something or other.
DerekRx Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 As promised, here's more from Saturday and Sunday. Originally we were planning a little baby shower for Elissa and KidTums, but apparently KT heard about it and wanted to play a bigger part, so she was born and stuff. We still had the party for them, despite their being stuck in the hospital (after all, there was beer credits for me to get yet!). Hopefully the next time there's a party, they'll both be able to make it (though KT will be drinking out of a different type of bottle.) The bartender and his selections, as you can see, LOTS was enjoyed, and not all of it was me One final brew with my buddy, to be re-replaced with Heath next week Yeah, that Fat Tire is pretty darn good. Someday we can only hope this is the new Sam Adams Boston Lager here's a good way to enjoy beer and staying thin, work out WHILE you drink! Mmmm, Sharkbite. Why didn't I get you on cask when I had the chance!? and there was cake too, assuring a good turnout Even the new daddy enjoyed some Fat Tire at the party The Great White was very lemony and sweet Whoa! Matt was a little too happy to see some Fat Tire Running low, we got some more brews, Kona Longboard Lager, Lost Coast Great White, and New Belgium's Fat Tire Guy enjoys his last beer before an extreme weight loss regimen Ah, the Obsidian, what a nice stout. He deschutes, he scores! More party-going fun with beer Wow was that Pipeline Porter loaded with coffee The Yellowtail went very fast, even the ladies dug its citrusy taste Oh yeah, the fridge selection: Ballast Point Yellowtail Pale Ale, Deschutes Obsidian Stout, HopDevil, Big Eye IPA, Kona Pipeline Porter, and Pizza Port Sharkbite Red Some of the other party-goers are enjoying my work. Notice JimmyBo stays loyal to Pizza Port First for me, the Big Eye IPA from Ballast Point. Oh sweet San Diego brews, can you do no wrong!? I *think* they'll like what we've got to offer Once again, I was put in charge of the beer. Hello BevMo! Had to stop by and recruit the newest future member of BACT, you may recognize the green HopDevil onesy Along with some great southwestern food I had a Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale. Awesome And you can never go wrong with an Oatmeal Stout from Anderson Valley The Howlin' Hefeweizen was extra banana-y, almost like the Drunk Monk from 3 Floyds The Golden Eagle was sorta weak, but it was just a typical blonde ale Racin' Red wasn't too bad, had a good hoppy kick The Intimidator IPA was pretty tasty, even if it was named after some dead Nascar dude My flight of beer, 4 of which are their own brews, an IPA, Red, blonde, and hefe, as well as an Anderson Valley Stout In Valencia is an almost unknown microbrewery, Wolf Creek. Saturday night would see us here
Rugged One Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Tonight's offering is one from a company whose beers I'm really starting to dig. He'Brew The Chosen Beer (ie The Schmaltz Brewing Co.) Some of their most recent beers I've tried have been big, bold, and in your face. Just the way I like them. Tonight's was no different. The He'Brew Genesis 10:10. An ale brewed with a crapload of malt, hops, and pomegranate juice especially for their 10th Anniversary. This must have gone over well, as they also just recently announced a brand new Origin Pomegranate Ale. I'm going to have to get my hands on some of that. Wow, I really liked this. Nice malt and hop balance and the pomegranate really stood out as it warmed up.
DerekRx Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 ^I suggest you go back to page 1 of this thread and actually read the rules. Anyway, for those of us actually of drinking age, my last night's beers. How I've missed you, my precious imperial amber Mmmmm, Nugget Nectar. It has been too long, my friend Very sweet and malty, but with some balanced hoppiness too. Not bad First to bat, the new Longshot Old Ale from Sam Adams, brewed by some homebrewer in California This is going to be a long, boring day at work before I can enjoy a tasty beverage Woke up to find more snow, oh joy!
Rugged One Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Let's see what I got into tonight on this Thirsty Thursday. Then a bottle of Saranac Caramel Porter from a birthday sixer that Adam & Ellen got me. Thanks guys! The Flying Fish 10th Anniversary Imperial Expresso Porter. This was a very rich porter with some nice coffee hints.
DerekRx Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Just chillin out on this still wintery Thursday in March, preparing for fun times this weekend. High in alcohol and very warming, perfect for tonight Yup, still winter, time to hibernate A solid IPA, well enjoyed while sporting some new swag Lagunitas IPA, reminding me of a NorCal trip I still gotta contemplate
65skylark Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 ^ Hey, nice shirt there Derek. Someday when Wally bacomes rich and famous our limited edition shirts are going to be worth something! The back side of said cool shirt. Finishing off the night witha few Sierra Nevada Pale Ales. Tonight I satarted with the Cinder Cone Red Ale from Deschutes Brewery. This is becomeing one of my favorite ambers.
CoasterFanatic Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 ^ Nice Glass. I finished off a couple bombers I "exported" out of California last weekend. AleSmith IPA (It's Pretty Awesome) Stone Pale Ale Of course ... both were excellent.
Rugged One Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 So last night, with Derek back from Cali and then immediately leaving for another trip, we still had time to fit in another fun edition of Friday Night Beerfest. Derek wanted me to point out that the Fantome Ghost looks like a evil, skinny Strong Sad. Until next Friday. We definitely picked up the chilli in this but never did detect much of the cocoa Finally, it was time for some new to us Belgian goodness, the Fantome Chocolat, brewed with a combo of cocoa & chilli pepper. My, this was a nice one. Loads of chocolate & hops and it hid it's 11 % ABV very nicely. But we're not done quite yet. Time for some desserts, starting with the Rogue Imperial Stout, complete with cool ceremic bomber. Just a solid lineup of IPAs from Moylan's. Great, yet another place now to visit in Nor Cal. Fantastic, and just as hoppy & juicy as it's lesser brother's. It wasn't as malty & as alcoholic as some other Triple IPAs that that just made it more drinkable. Finally, it was time for the coup da gras. The Hopsickle Triple IPA. Wow, this was a fantastic Double IPA. Derek & I both agreed it was one of the best we've ever had. The Moylander Double IPA. Next up, the winner of both the 2001 & 2002 Alpha King Challenge at the GABF. This is ann awesome version of the West Coast style with a great balance between the citrus and hops. First up, a trio of super hoppy beers from Moylan's Brewery & Restaurant in Navato, CA. About 30 miles up the road from San Fran. We started with the Moylan's IPA.
Nodders Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 ^ Some excellent looking ales there, guys. Next year's looking good for a few of us getting over there so hopefully we can try a few for ourselves! I haven't had much in the way of alcohol just lately, but tonight I had a Director's Ale from Courage. I won't bother with any photos 'cos you've seen it before. As soon as I get something in that I haven't yet posted I'll put some pics up. Cheers!
Coaster Palooza Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Here is one from the Un-Solace weekend. Thanks for the Hop Devil Derek!
Rugged One Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Tonight's selection is one of a couple of surprise bottles that Derek brought back for me from his recent visit out West. The Ballast Point Double Dorado DIPA. I had passed up a chance to try this when we were last out in San Diego last fall (instead getting a Green Flash IPA, which is now available all over the place here) and really regretted it. Glad I finally got to try it! The Ballast Point Double Dorado DIPA. Mmmm. Just a ton of fresh hops, citrus, pine and sweet, sweet maltiness. Just a great example of the West Coast DIPA.
Rugged One Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Some more Founder's excellence tonight... The Founder's Red's Rye. Very nice Rye Ale. Tons of hops and citrus up front that meld instantly into malty rye. Great stuff!
PhishyBrewer Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 I was going to visit Popeye's Beer Club in Tokyo last Sunday to try some Japanese craft brews but after getting directions I realized they were closed on Sunday. So I just drank pretty normal stuff while in Japan. Kirin Brau Draft
DerekRx Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 I've been gone awhile, but I was on vacation in Florida. "With an over abundance of domestic beers to appease the tourists, Orlando isn't very micro-friendly. It wasn't very BACT-like, no Heath or Adam or even Tom, but I did manage to enjoy one for my homeys while enjoying a great trip with my woman. Not sure if Anheuser-Busch calls this anything else, but apparently they brew a special beer just for Animal Kingdom called the Safari Amber. I wasn't too interested in it, but I was told it was somewhat Sam Adams like and was exclusive, so I gave it a shot (plus my other options were the standard A-B beers or even worse crap). So while enjoying a fantastic buffet at Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, I decided to have one. And yup, it did actually taste pretty darn good, somewhat hoppy with a nice malt backbone and not too watery. Go Anheuser! Safari Amber, served on draft and pretty good! I was impressed.
DerekRx Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Today was back to the daily grind, no more Nicole, no more Disney, no more not working...Which, of course meant by the time I got home I was in dire need of beer! Decided to start off the night with another new brew donated by Heath from a brewery loved by Matt, Lakefront Brewing. While the temperature was in the 80s in Florida and 70s in Pennsylvania yesterday, today it's back in the 30s, with snow on the way. Better break out a stout to warm me up, and since I'm still tired, throw some coffee in it too. Thus, Fuel Cafe Stout was the beer I selected...and it was HORRIBLE! I don't even know how they classified this as a stout, yet alone a coffee stout. Crap, even Bareknuckle tastes better than this watery sugary garbage. Matt, this place better have some better stuff, or you're off the team! Ah, now that's more like it! OK, I can't not have a good beer tonight, time for my ever so missed Nugget Nectar Just a bland horribly watery sweet taste. No coffee flavor and hardly any stoutness. Bleeeech! Fuel Cafe Stout, brewed by Lakefront brewing for the Fuel Cafe, a place it seems I won't be running to on any future trips
mcjaco Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I swear, I tell you two to STAY AWAY from Fuel Cafe and Grist from them, and what do you do???? You buy Fuel Cafe. Fuel Cafe is one major pile of crap. I dumped mine after the first bottle.
Rugged One Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 ^Well in all fairness, I bought the Fuel crap before you told me to stay away from it. Now the Holiday Lager on the other hand. Can't wait for Derek to try that one out. I actually bought a bottle of something new from Lakefront last night. I'm giving them one more chance.
mcjaco Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 ^ Touche! Although I haven't found the Holiday Lager around here since early December, so I'm shocked you found some this late. I'm partial to Cream City and Cat Tail Ale.
DerekRx Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 It's the end of the work week, which means....5 Beer Friday! Of course, the craptastic weather would prevent me from meeting up with my cohort for the evening, so I'll have to do it by myself with some stuff laying around the house, all themed to the season. An average porter, but it was a nice warmer, with more coffee flavoring than a whole keg of Fuel Cafe has And finally, the Wild Goose Classic Porter to end out our darker winter ale night Hoppy and sweet like caramel and a little hint of chocolate. A nice mild winter ale Which brings us to Never Summer Ale from Boulder Brewing Yup, still snowing/sleeting. With Spring supposed to occur next week, I think it'll never be summer Dark yet sweet with some holidayness, but still beer Next in line, some Lagunitas Brown Shugga' Ahhh! Now that's a good stout, chock full of coffee yet still retaining its beerness It's time for something we like and Matt can't get, Bell's Java Stout Blah, a little less horrible than Harpoons Cinnamon Crapfest, but the spices, honey, and oranges totally out do the beerlike aspects of this lager. Matt, your Lakefront is 0-2 But I've got plenty to keep me going. First up, Lakefront's Holiday Spice Lager, a beer Matt recommends. 2 days ago it was in the upper 70s and sunny, now it's in the 30s and snowing. No meeting up with Heath tonight
Rugged One Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 Some pics from Thursday night's DuClaw release. So which am I? Kissably drunk or all the rage? Actually a little of both! Happy St. Patties Day everyone and thanks for reading. Pretty cool free glass. It went nicely with my release special of bangers & mash. Check out that crazy presentation. Talk about carb overload though! A nice dry Irish Stout. All right, time to get pissed! Of course Mr. Fury doesn't take too kindly to this and whips out his sword. I have to admit that this wasn't one of their better release vids. The release video was another one of their "Digital Shorts". Head brewer Jim Wagner has to call in "Mr. Celtic Fury" because he had some complaints from the other workers about him. I don't have a pic of next month's preview. Why? Cuz next's month's release is a real "Enigma" and all they showed was a big smokey ?. I guess we'll have to wait for next month. ...and even six degrees of Celtic Fury. ...the Irish in general... Trivia time, of course they had to do with Irish Stouts... Kim digs the Funk and it didn't even give her the runs! There's been a slight tweaking to their current lineup of staple beers. The Kangaroo Love Light Lager as been replaced by the return of the Funk American Wheat Beer. As a matter fact, I have two! One of the few times you'll not see start out with a Venom. That's cuz my baby, The Naked Fish, is still on tap. The return of the Celtic Fury Irish Stout! Back at DuClaw and it's the week before St. Patties Day. That can only mean one thing...
Rugged One Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 Last night Kim and I split a bottle of the latest release from Dogfish Head. Their Red & White is a 12% Witbier on steroids, that...well I'll quote right off the bottle. "A big, belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation a fraction of the batch is aged in Oregon Pinot Noir barrels, and another fraction is aged on oak staves. The beer is blended together before packaging." Yet another fantastically extreme beer from Dogfish Head. Kim & I both enjoyed it immensely! Beer & wine? And it worked ! What will those crazy bastards from Dogfish think up next?
DerekRx Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 Today is St. Patty's Day, a day this thread should see more posters than usual. I'll start off since I'm at home thanks to the snow and no DD. Most people go with some craptastic light beer with some green food coloring, or a Guinness because it's Irish. But not me. If you want green on this day, fine, hops are greenish. Today's theme, some quite awesome IPAs, made from the finest hops ever. Still following the West Coast tradition, but this one has a little bit more malt added and possibly to end the night, the Green Flash West Coast IPA Oh my, this is so citrusy and wonderful. Best St. Patty's Day ever! So nice I think I'll drink it twice (bombers are a good thing) and boy am I glad I did! This is phenominal, even better than Pliny the Elder! Next up, Ballast Point's Dorado Double IPA, something I picked up out in Cali a few weeks ago After some Wipeout, it was time to appease the cousins by building them a snow fort Ohh, I so hope I can grab more of this stuff soon It's a bomber so I gotta finish the Wipeout, and I don't mind one bit She claimed it was "sweet with a kick" Good job, Leffe Even Nan wanted one today, though she's still in the midst of being coaxed into the good stuff. Leffe blonde, you're up! Oh, so phenominal. Please, do yourselves a favor and stop by Carlsbad's Pizza Port the next time you're at Legoland and grab one! To start things off, the finest thing out of the SoCal area, Pizza Port's Wipeout IPA
