Mr Stratosphere Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 So sorry that there hasn't been an update of the Clarion Implosion, it was pushed back apparently due to CES. Well there is a new date and it is currently scheduled for 2/10/2015 at 2:30AM.
Jew Posted January 23, 2015 Author Posted January 23, 2015 Guess I'm heading back to Vegas on the 9th!
K1ngdaKa88 Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Here is the view from our room at the Flamingo hotel in summer 2013. We were in the 21st floor!
Jew Posted February 1, 2015 Author Posted February 1, 2015 The Flamingo hasn't held up well, especially with Caesars financial troubles.
gisco Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Is something going to be built on the spot being vacated by the Clarion?
bert425 Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 The Flamingo hasn't held up well, especially with Caesars financial troubles. true, the rooms are nothing special these days (and the "go" rooms are a joke (they look like bad 70's porn could be shot there). . but the price is right for the level of Hotel it is, and the location is just fantastic.
Jew Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 Is something going to be built on the spot being vacated by the Clarion? The owner claims it will be another hotel. No casino/entertainment this time, primarily focused on getting convention business. However, he is attempting to use the sketchy EB-5 financing model (attracting foreign investors in exchange for U.S. citizenship), so we will see if anything comes to fruition. Construction hasn't resumed on Resorts World either, and they are trying to use the same financing mechanism.
bert425 Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 CNN covered it http://www.cnn.com/videos/us/2015/02/10/vo-hotel-implosion-las-vegas.ksnv
Mr Stratosphere Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 1 implosion down and 1 to go. The Grammercy on the 215 and Russell will be imploded this Saturday at 8AM.
Mr Stratosphere Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Here is a great video from one of our local papers! At the 0:22 mark of the video, look towards the bottom right, a street light gets taken out by the building! You will also notice that the elevator shaft and stairwell fails to completely collapse, it was taken down by crane and cable later in the day. This is the second time that this happened to a Las Vegas Implosion, it happened to The Hacienda in 1996 as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcay2TuIlf4
Meteornotes Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Really would like to be there for one of these at some point. dt
gisco Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 When I first saw the video on the channel I was watching they made no mention of the elevator shaft not falling. I would have like to see how they managed to attach cables and bring it down.
Jew Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 Really would like to be there for one of these at some point. dt I'm glad I was able to make it out to see it in person. Was cool to feel the force of so much dynamite (it shook the parking garage we were watching from that was probably close to a 1/2 mile away). Was also interesting to see them use fans on trucks to push the debris could away from that garage.
Double0Kevin Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 ^ Ironic you guys watched from the parking structure of the resort that is likely next to be imploded. I won't be missing this one. From everything I've heard, The Riv could be done operating as early as May and completely gone by June. http://www.reviewjournal.com/business/casinos-gaming/las-vegas-riviera-hotel-about-be-history
Jew Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 The place was really depressing. I checked it out before the implosion Poorly laid out casino floor that was almost a ghost town. Only downside to losing it will be one less independently operated (and low budget) hotel on the strip.
gisco Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 The North end of the strip doesn't get much love. If they implode the Riviera I might try and plan a trip to watch.

Really a decline from even 10 years ago.
Jew Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 ^I actually entered the casino from the convention centers/banquet halls thinking it was the main entrance (since it's the closet doors to the parking garage). People are freaking out because it's one of the last links to "old" Vegas---but it's really only a link in name.
gisco Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Old Vegas is pretty much gone. The strip has been taken over by big companies with mega resorts.
Jew Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 (edited) ^What's interesting/fascinating to me about Vegas is I think that is the one city in the world that can get away with consistently re-inventing themselves. It's really part of their culture. In Los Angeles, it bums me out whenever a developer demolishes a piece of history for a generic giant condo building. In Las Vegas it doesn't even phase me. I mean, they went from Mob ruled, to mega resorts, to family friendly, to ultra luxury, and now the big thing is non-gaming items like clubs and shopping and conventions. Philrad71 Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Old Vegas is pretty much gone. The strip has been taken over by big companies with mega resorts. My sister just landed their yesterday and sent me a photo of the Circus Circus sign as that is where we used to go when we were kids as it was really the only place on the strip that our parents COULD take us. So that got me thinking about how many of the old Vegas hotels on the Strip are left since I was a kid during the 80's? I could only come up with a few: Circus Circus Flamingo Hilton Riviera Caesar's Palace Tropicana (although not like the old Trop) Bally's (formerly MGM Grand) Hilton (although not on the Strip)
Mr Stratosphere Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Below is the video from Controlled Demolition Inc. who imploded the Gramercy.

Hilton is no longer the Hilton (it was H2 last time we were in town). Slots of Fun is still there next to CircusCircus -- but like Tropicana, they have totally re-done it, so it's the same in name only these days. what about Monte Carlo?. .that's still there. As is Harrah's -- tho they totally re-did the riverboat theme. Freemont has held up a bit better, with several of the classics still around: Binion's, Golden Nugget, Plaza. .
Jew Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 Las Vegas Hilton is now Westgate. Monte Carlo opened in 1996
