Six Flags Darien Lake (SFDL) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

The only turn off with a Splash Battle is the amount of space it takes up. To put that in Darien's perspective, it would take up about half of Beaver Bros. Bay. I don't think that the park would build another tracked ride anyways, after the addition of Moose on the Loose.

If the park ever removes Thunder Rapids, I think that that would be a great spot for a Splash Battle. I wouldn't call the park land-locked yet, but there are a few places that they could start to expand on.

Off topic but if there was another water park expansion, could the park ever drain the lake by Big Kahuna? That is a lot of land to pass up on.

Firstly, Ranger is NOT closing (I asked on facebook and Darien denied plans of removal)

Also here is a fanfic-

I was at Darien Lake one day when the CEO of CNL income properties was siting at a table. This person was really enjoying a snack, making snarf and grunting noises. When I looked closer I noticed that there was solid waste (that means poopoo) on his plate. Mr.CEO of CNL loves poop . So I asked "Are you enjoying this wonderful day?" The poop eater replies "GGRRRrrrRRROWL!GrrRowl! NAH! I wan' money!" There he goes, CEO of CNL income properties, crawling on all fours eating the children of park guests and their poop.Creepy little man THE END

^^ That's just park talk. They cannot confirm anything until they release the official plans for next year.

Matthew - we have not made any announcements about rides being removed, including Ranger. Stay tuned to the page for any updates - we will announce all changes here.

This says nowhere that they are not removing Ranger. They said the exact same thing before removing UFO two years ago. Ranger and the Raging Seas seem to have died to the same fate. Raging Seas almost didn't pass the state inspection two years ago due to a major electrical issue. That's why on any given day, 2-3 boats weren't working. It plagued that ride for years. Now Ranger failed a safety inspection and is likely going to be removed.

As for CNL, they have been blasted a lot, but they cannot be blamed for everything that has happened. IIRC they were actually pushing for Lake Monster last year, and Herschend backed out. CNL isn't completely bad, the whole custody issue of the park is what is hurting it. Both companies have different ideas, and butt heads when it comes time to announce new attractions.

However for the future of the park, and I believe that most people will agree with me, Herschend is the better choice. They have experience in the industry, and have great ideas in store for the park. After having a bad rap for years, the park has seen a turnaround recently. Look at the landscaping and culture of the park. It is heavily weighed on the family and overall experience sides. CNL doesn't know much in the amusement industry, and that has hurt the park a bit in more recent years. That is why Herschend is clearly the better choice for the future.

Okay, you've totally confused me. I was always under the impression that Herschend wanted Lake Monster since they had the success with Outlaw Run and CNL backed out thus giving them the reputation of being tight with the purse strings.

It was to my understanding that Herschend backed out because the park saw a decrease in attendance last year.

This year, CNL didn't want to put much money into the park, and they are looking to cut back and sell some properties later this year. I could be wrong, but the custody battle of the park is really killing it right now.

^This was according to a new member who we assume works at the park.

The ride had to pass the state inspection to even open this season. But the ride has been down for about a month now, and hasn't even been touched by maintenance. These are signs that the ride will be replaced by a newer model.

For anyone who visits the park soon, the Emporium is having a huge sale for the end of the year. Some items available are:

$10 lawn chairs

$2 key chains

$5 shirts

$5 cups and mugs

There were also hoodies and other items available for prices that I didn't look at.

Okay, I'm there now so I'll take a look and see if anything interests me.

The park is really shabby. Boomerang was awful. It didn't even feel safe. RoS was okay. I need to visit the chiropractor now Elissa! Predator screwed my back.

My trip report from Darien Lake from Saturday, August 23rd.

The parks was HORRIBLE! I honestly hate to say such negative things about a park, but this parks was second to Six Flags Great America. Anyway, hear are my thoughts. The park wasn't that crowded.

Joel Manby, please buy this park!

Boomerang Your apple pie of each park. Just toss these away.

Blast Off I was able to catch this when it didn't have issues. It was a fun S&S drop tower.

Viper Just gross. I hate Arrows and this really is a horrible park. I do have to say it has nice trains.

Mind Eraser SLC. What do I have to say?

Ride of Steel Good coaster. Had some nice ejector air time. I don't like the name though. Please change it!

Moto Coaster This was really, really fun!

Big Kahuna Fun ride! I like these ProSlide Mammoth rides a lot!

Mister Twister Topsy Turvy ride. Not too bad.

Darien Lake has a good water park.

Predator I hate Dinn/Summers coasters. Seriously. This was AWFUL!

Nik Wallenda Show Fun and unique show. I'm glad Darien Lake was able to get this.

The one train operations were just wayyy too annoying. Really?

Huh? Your trip report is bizarre and doesn't make much sense. You seem to like most of the rides and the water park, but hate the park? Did you even ride Viper? I don't understand how it's "gross". What specifically about the park was so awful, other than the one train operations?

The one train operations thing still has me in disbelief though. I imagine the upper echelons of CNL just gave up on the idea because they didn't want to spare the expense when they just want to off-load the park anyway.

I gotta agree with Shavethewhales here. The trip report calls most rides really nice or good, but it calls the park horrible. Yes, there are some areas that are lacking, but overall this is the best the park has been in years. There is finally attention being payed to the maintenance area. As rides start to age now, the policy is sort of like refurbish or remove. Would it be worth keeping Ranger as is for another two years, then suffer another setback? No. The park made the right choice and are now are most likely removing it.

Viper is also at its best right now. The park went out of the way to repaint it and make the trains like new. The station and queue should get some sort of work, but it is not that bad.

Also on one train ops, it is for the best. I'm friends with a lot of the guys in the maintenance staff including the manager. I asked him about it recently, and he said that most rides are really good to go with two. They just ran one train this year balance out the service schedule. What I mean by this is for instance, last year RoS ran its blue train. This year it is running the red train to even things out, and so the trains will take longer to wear. He said that he can't say if next year they will run two or not, it's up to the operations department and Herschend themselves. But if they had the choice, they would like to run two.

*facepalm* How dare you say that Viper is gross, it's not that bad of an Arrow coaster and sure Darien Lake has a good water park, but it could use another slide complex. The Predator is indeed a bad coaster, frankly I much rather see Darien Lake get a Gerstlauer spinning coaster to replace Predator!

... makes the park actually sound decent. At least, that's the vibe I'm getting when you get into details.

I'd really consider putting more detail into your trip reports and explain why a park was good or bad. Many of us, myself included, wanna hear why... instead of only "the park was HORRIBLE!" or certain rides were "gross." What made your experience at the park so bad? (Other than 1 train operations, I guess.)

It is definitely interesting to hear what outside eyes think of the park. Of course for the regulars on the thread, we see the park the most so we know most of the park's issues. We are also going to say good things about the park because it is our home park, and there are no other major ones within a 2 hour radius.

Off topic, but does anyone have an idea when this year's announcement will be? I hope it isn't a late one like last year, but no new rides were announced. For Blast Off/Boardwalk, I recall the announcement being right around now or early in September.

My prediction for Darien Lake's fall event is going to be just some sort of family thing with a corn maze, a trick of treat trail and crafts for kids, and just the kiddie rides and Giant Wheel open. I guess there going to be no Fright Fest!

I am kinda happy to see the trip report and kinda sad as well. How can someone say that the park is terrible because they have an arrow looper and they hate them. Viper is a surprisingly smooth ride compared to other arrows, and after 30+ years is still very rideable. Yes the park does need some things and some touches, which we all know about. The issues with boomerang are a bit concerning. Hopefully they get that fixed without having to eat up a significant portion of next years budget doing so.

On the topic of announcements, I think the last few for boardwalk and rowdy's ridge came in the late winter, like february or so. If they were early, it sure wasnt this early. I think a significant portion of the timing of the announcements has to do with the amount of time construction will take. If they are planning on new flats next year, those could easily be installed in a month or so. If they choose to rebuild a new area of the park, that may take longer, but not alot longer.

It might just be me, but Boomerang and Viper have always been two better coasters of their type. I've been riding Viper since it opened, and only have received minimal head banging on my worst rides. Same goes for Boomerang, and I am an average sized person.

I don't think that Boomerang's issue is too bad either. I just really hope that the park decided to close it after what I saw last week. The lift cable slipped off the second catch car and was laying on the ground. The issue with the lift probably contributed to it. I used to be a ride mechanic back in the day, and from what I've seen, I think that there is a leak in the hydraulic system. There is hydraulic fluid laying in a channel of hoses, and the issue may be as simple as replacing a fastener.

Back on announcements, the park usually announces late, but I know for a fact that Blast Off was done right before Fright Fest because the park put up billboards for it in the park.

Yes i totally agree that viper and boomerang are rather good for their types of coasters. I think the issue with some arrow coasters was height. It seemed like the trains couldn't handle the higher speeds that went with the added height on coasters like steel phantom, great american scream machine, drachen fire and shockwave. The smaller drops seem to stay good for a long time.

And yes they did put up the billboards early, but they almost had to since they removed a ride and everyone knew something was going to take it's place. At this point, there isnt anything like that in the park as of yet, unless they remove ranger anytime soon
