sixflagscoasters Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 There will be a show about Hard Rock Park today on the Science Channel. It will be on today at two different times 8pm and 11pm, and then again on the 11th and 12th. Check your local listings for channel and times. Link to the shows channel: http://science.discovery.com/tv-schedules/series.html?paid=48.15411.125355.36186.14 I have not seen the show yet, but I hope they go into a lot of details. Maybe even talk about the financial troubles and bankruptcy, but I doubt it. I think I saw Colossal Construction that was for new water park. The show was interesting, and did have some nice information, and lets the viewer see how things get built. Whats involved, problems that happen, changes that need to be made, etc...So I hope this will be a good show about Hard Rock Park.
gisco Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I'll bet that the show was taped way before the current financial problems came to light and will cover and will cover only the construction of the Park to opening day.
kidcoaster 2 Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Should be an interesting show to watch. I have seens ones they have done on single roller coasters so it will be nice seeing a whole park.
Y2J2003Y2J Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Its Eerie, the teaser going to commercial talking about if they fall behind and have to delay the opening to the park it would create losses. Boy did they lose big time and not from opening late.
CoasterLine Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Pff. Colossal Construction: Hard Rock Park It's obvious to see they are setting up for the sequel. Colossal Failure: Hard Rock Park
QueerRudie Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 A great program which is now historic as it shows what a park ONCE looked like before it closed.... For such a program NOT to have had an editied 'By the way, the park closed on XX date' is going to be a bit misleading for the GP who might actually wish to venture forth to see it.... As I can picture Ma and Pa Jones of Alabama going to Myrtle beach and walking up to the gates going "Now wahhhr did they put them tharr rides??"
doom1001 Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 They can always put a Marty Moose character out front with a button that you press that explains the situation!!
chef kitchen Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 They can always put a Marty Moose character out front with a button that you press that explains the situation!! That's a good one.
OldJJman Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I caught the last 5 minutes. No mention at all of the park's demise. But they did state that Maximum RPM was ready for opening day. Go figure. I have the DVR to record it at 8pm. (IN HD!) JJ
sam06pr Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Kinda sad...all that hard work and nothing! It just went down the hole like no one put an effort for it. It must be so frustrated to be one of those behind the project, so much passion, so much anxiousness, so much hard work. It really sucks.
CoasterLine Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 It's actually kind of sad, because had the park been able to withstand through 2009, this would have most likely had some moderate effect, letting people know it was there. Then again, advertising wasn't their strong suit.
pkd freak Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 WOOOW, this is so sad and weird to look at. I just can't believe it.
pkd freak Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 All that trouble they took to put up Led Zepplin They have to take it right down.
Speeddeamon128 Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I missed the Friday show. I'll hopefully catch it again later this weekend.
gisco Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I can just imagine all the people seeing the show and wanting to go to the park only to find out it is closed.
montezooma Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 All that trouble they took to put up Led ZepplinThey have to take it right down. and ship it to World's of Fun
OldJJman Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Just watched the complete show. It was fairly uninteresting. It kinda focused on the assembly of Led Zeppelin, the "Hard Rock" guitar, and Maximum RPM, with a large focus on the problems with the Ferris wheel alignment. Not necessarily a must see. C+
FlyingScooter Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I look forward to the sequel: Seconds From Economic Disaster, followed by Mega Movers after the rides get sold.
gisco Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 ^ lol That will be the next special. How to level a theme park!
montezooma Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I watched this special and it really bummed me out that I didn't make it out there. It looks like the Great America parks when they first opened, very flat and young landscaping. I am going to go out on a limb here and say I believe this park could have survived if not for THREE things. The concept is good and with a little tweeking could have easily become more family friendly. With a few more seasons under its belt the ride lineup could have been improved (ie: Fiesta Texas) and the management and pricing can always be adjusted according to operational expenses and attendance. On the surface it looks to me like the three biggest mistakes made on this park are: Location, Location, Location. And that is why we don't see one of the corporations coming in and getting this very nice theme park at the bargain basement price.
QueerRudie Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Shane once again has a great point... A park like that, with a good lineup of starting rides, should in theory be a winner- but the 'location, location, location' is the key factor. Myrtle beach is one of the critical factors in any good operation- wherever it is. The park itself looked good, although some of the 'artwork' to me appeared a bit cheesy- but then again that's not a park crieteria for being succesful. In all reality, if they could have held on for a few seasons, it might have been a different outcome from what we've got today. It was very interesting to see just how full and coplete the park was- I've only been to one park when it was 'new' (FT) and I liked the 'new park smell' that it had abounding. I can only hop the concept doesn't die, and that we see an improved version of the park in the future- as a 'HRP' in a better location and with better financing might turn out to be a real blockbuster.

HRP had the potential to be as good as IOA or a Busch or Herschend park, but the location (and also timing) was just right poison to stop it
