Michael...don't blush...apparently I was "having sex".

Hey now, the actions shown matched to the lyrics do not imply exactly what is going on, only what it may appear to look like on screen.

Although I wish it was the case because I would love to be 35 again!

I got my DVD set something like 2 days after I ordered it. I put in disc 1 last night and I must say, you guys (gals) are crazy, and it looks like it was a lot of fun. I don't really know any of you, but just how tall IS Casey?

Then I watched a few select coaster POVs on disc 2. Nice...... I was watching them in my home theater on my 104" screen, so it was like being there, but not really. I did have to "stretch" out the screen to make it fit the wide screen, so everything was a little "fatter" but it was fun just the same...

Just curious, did the DVD look ok in widescreen mode?

I've seen our DVDs on widescreen TV's and for me you notice the stretch for like a moment, and then you kind of don't notice it anymore.

From this point on, though, everything we shoot is going to be 16x9. So starting with Coaster Expedition Volume 12, they will all be widescreen!

TPR DVDs in widescreen?! That's awesome Robb!

As someone who's owned a widescreen TV of some sort for a good six or seven years I've always been quite anal about keeping things in their proper aspect ratio. I'm also one of those people who notice things being made "fat" when watched in the wrong ratio.

With widescreen becoming more and more the standard its great to see TPR adopting 16x9. TPR DVDs will look really awesome in widescreen!

Oh and Coaster Expedition Volume 10 is awesome too!

The only problem of course is the lack of 16x9 lipstick cameras so most of the POV will still have to be 4:3 and convered to 16x9.

I've done a couple of tests already but it seems like the best way is to stretch it out slightly.

Anyone else worked with converting 4:3 footage to 16x9 and want to share some tricks?

^ How does the lipstick camera work? I was under the impression it was an external camera that plugged into your camera, and if the camera is set to film in 16x9, that's how it would film. Obviously, I'm wrong.

^It actually depends on the chip inside the optical medium. If the chip is 16:9. Then the recorded image will be 16:9. If the chip is a 4:3 AR. then it will be recorded in 4:3. The recording medium will record whatever the capture device is.

Robb, I find that shooting with a wide angle lens really helps with the conversion. Being that your already compressing a wider image onto a 4:3 screen. When it is stretched out. It helps having that much more content on screen. But, I think you already know that, as I believe we've had this conversation before.

Oh! For all those interested. "What's in a Brain?" was shot 16:9. Some of the Halloween 2005 footage from Universal / IOA was even shot 2.35:1 letterboxed to 16:9. And I might add, it looks F'ing awesome on my new 65" 1080p Mitsu. So does the Wii! Oh! and so does the PS3! I think after "WiaB2? The Revenge of Dr. Phyl." is released, I will start shooting in HD.

I'm sure helmetcam will come out with a 16:9 chip lipstick cam soon. They will have to. That's the only way they will be able to compete.

Just finished watching CE10! Awesome job you guys! An absolute joy to watch from start to finish. Very well paced, funny and exciting. It makes you feel as if you were right there on the trip getting Spookbaby boob creds.

It's an external camera plugged into the deck, yes, but the deck is set to "VCR Mode" so it records whatever signal is input into it.

I've basically done some tests with stretching out the POV to 16x9 from the lipstick camera and you really cannot tell. It's more for when I shoot people with the lipstick cam that I need another alternative.

^ Do you happen to know what the pipeline for that would be?

I'm assuming:

1. Drag in my 4:3 footage and add crop marks.

2. Re-render out so the final AVI has the crop marks burned into the video.

3. Open up my 16x9 project.

4. Import the cropped 4:3 into the 16x9 project.

The question I have is will the crop marks appear in the 16x9 timeline?

So far I up to the midwest extras. Had to stop due to work. Did notice that Kings Island wasn't on the contents and that the numbering was off, nothing big, just something I noticed watching (don't know if it was mentioned yet or not).

Robb, I couldn't even guess what the pipeline would be for that as I've done no actual video production. In Idol I've come across loads of issues like this with various types of footage, and the best solution has always been cropping. Of course I'm doing it all programmatically with (ugh) DirectX 9 calls), rather than with high-level apps.

Now I could probably write you a little app in just a day or so that you could use to crop/stretch all the 4:3 footage into 16:9, but unfortunately I don't have the time.

Cornball Express

Lost Coaster of Superstition Mountain

Great White is located at Morey's Piers in Wildwood, NJ.

Robb, If you mask the 4:3 stuff, off line it, then re digitize it as 16:9, you will actually get closer to a 2.35:1 aspect ratio on a 16:9 format. Unless you use some sort of scaler or digital zoom between the off line and re-capture. However, I must say I really like the look of the 16:9 letterboxed. If you shoot it with a superwide angle lens. It looks like panavision!
