Attempted rape reported at Disney's Pop Century resort

Orlando Sentinel

A guest staying at Walt Disney World's Pop Century resort narrowly avoided being raped last Friday evening, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office. The woman was walking about 5:50 p.m. on a path when a man pushed and knocked her to the ground in 4-feet-tall bushes. The man immediately reached into the pockets of her shorts and snatched her room key, states an incident report released on Tuesday. Details of how the woman escaped have not been released.

She returned to her room about 6 p.m. but could not open the door because her key had been bent in the attack. She alerted her husband sleeping inside by screaming and pounding on the locked door, the report states. The husband had a hotel worker call 911, while he ran to the resort's pool area in search of the attacker, the report states.

At least 11 sheriff's patrol cars responded to the call and remained parked outside the hotel until late Friday night, a tourist from Texas told the newspaper. The attacker was described by the victim as a tall, light skin black man, 190 pounds, 40 to 50 years old, with short, clean-cut black hair, brown hair, and wearing a clean, short-sleeve white shirt with dark pants. On Tuesday, members of the sheriff's Sex Crimes unit continued to search for the suspect.

If I say anything, people are going to call me an idiot...again.

A woman was raped in a Target parking lot by my house. Does that mean Target is going to take a pr hit. You didn't need to say anything because the caption under the thread title totally shows how you feel. I am sorry you feel so attacked on here, but these things are not Disney's fault. They are the fault of society. Disney didn't make that guy do that, he did it of his own free will. In a society where people would be blamed for their own actions this wouldn't even be news, but in our country people are always looking to put the blame somewhere else. Disney can't have security on every single inch of every property.

Um, OK maybe I'm missing something in this story, but how does a man pushing her down, and taking her keys equate to "almost rape?"

This sounds a little fishy.

Just another reason to never stay in a Disney Value resort.

Edit: it's interesting that they use the verb "snatch" when reporting on an apparent attempted rape.

I imagine the unreleased "details" might shed some light on that question.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this is the first time this has happened on the WDW resort property.

^ Oh I'm sure they will. I think titling an article with "rape" in it, is a bit of stretch with the details given. At the worst, at least say "sexual assault" at this point in time.

^ LOL.

Yeah, the only thing that hurts Disney is incomplete reporting. Some stories should not be reported on until complete.

In other news, on the morning of Sept. 11th, 2001, Islamic militants woke up pissed off at the United States. Sometime before noon, the two World Trade Center buildings in New York collapsed, the Pentagon was on fire, and thousands of people died.

On April 10th, 1912, the HMS Titanic set sail from England on her maiden voyage. In the early morning hours of April 15th, it sank.

Missing something?

Heck, for all we know, this could have been staged. Without further details, this story is worthless.

Assaults can happen at any time, and anywhere.

I was almost involved in a fight at Hersheypark once when we refused to let a line jumper past us. Doesn't say anything about the safety of the park though. Just one random incident.

Is anybody else getting a little tired and annoyed of seeing these 'Disney incident' stories? They aren't really news pieces. They just try to make it news because it's at Disney. Does that strategy never get played out? I know it's become boring to me.

I guess in a way it's become entertaining, since every time a new article comes out, I get to try and derive the real story from the published story.

Slow news day I'm guessing.

All a bit boring now, Disney this, Disney that... blah blah blah...

At the end of the day, people aren't going to stop going are they? As long as those individuals have a good time without being harmed, you know they'll return.

My thoughts exactly. Not a lot of certainties given in this article, and "victim planning" is not unheard of.

'Cept it was the RMS Titanic. "Royal Mail Steamer".
