ParkTrips Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 It's been a little while, but here is an all-new Cooking with Joe! This is a "recipe" that sort of just came together in the shopping cart - beer steak! However... looks like a fine meal and tastes like a fine meal are 2 different things. Ugh. You could really taste the beer, which is what I wanted... but the combination of flavors of beer and steak just didn't work out. At least not to me. As Scott says, just because 2 things are great alone doesn't mean they are good together. Oh well. This CWJ was a success in that HAZMAT wasn't dispatched, but the meal itself was hardly edible to me (didn't help that my appetite was taken away this afternoon when I was fed Domino's... yuck). Thanks for reading. Pairing it with - what else? - a Celebrator! That looks like a fine meal!! Just drain the water and add a little butter... Meanwhile, inside, the noodles are nearing completion as well So let the grilling commence! Mmmm Bavaria's finest doppelbock and steak, two of the greatest things in the world... what could go wrong? At this point things are looking great .. without, uh, propane. =/ well I did eventually get some on there.. Its for the grill! Yes, a longtime Cooking with Joe friend, the propane grill.. Time to go outside, and its not for swimming in algae I have chosen some simple noodles to go with my steak. Alright, tonight I came back and fired up some boiling water. Don't even ask what is on the back burner. I think it may have been a malaria sample. and from there I allowed it to soak overnight Add 2 bottles of beer... Place steaks in container... and to tenderize, instead of a small mallet, I used a rolling pin I wanted to put holes in the steak to allow the beer to soak in, and the best thing I found was a turkey injector. Ingredient #2 - beer, duh! I went with Ayinger's Celebrator Doppelbock because I happened to have a 4-pack in the fridge, and I wasn't sure if Terrapin Rye would work as well Ingredient #1 - steak, duh! Kinda small cuts..
RIP Psyclone Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Sorry it didn't work out, Joe, but experimentation is the mark of a great chef. Might have been better medium rare!
exit english Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 First, you gotta use a much lighter colored beer, and 2nd, you can't marinate it for that long. It's pretty good if you use use it lightly. Also, seconding the medium-rare comment.
ginzo Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Hahaha. I knew this one wasn't going to end well. Thanks for the entertainment.
mcjaco Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 This was brillant, until I realized you just wasted two bottles of beer to make it. For shame, Joe. For shame.
ParkTrips Posted December 19, 2007 Author Posted December 19, 2007 I agree, I prefer medium rare over anything, and it did cook too long because I underestimated just how thin the thing was... but I can eat medium well too - that wasn't the problem. I'm sad I wasted beer too - that's $4.50 worth of delicious beer that I won't be able to consume. I don't think the color of the beer has anything to do with it. My step dad liked it. Others may like it too. It just wasn't for me. At least I still had my clean beer to enjoy in the wake of the mess.
exit english Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I don't think the color of the beer has anything to do with it. I don't know, I've done it with Heineken (ugh....) and it came out pretty good, but something darker and more flavorful, would seem to overpower the meat IMO. Then again, I didn't marinate it overnight, either.
Meteornotes Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I'm bummed that it didn't work out, but it's cool that you tried an experiment. And hey, there was a random mystery pan on the stove containing some unknown substance, so once again Cooking With Joe does not fail to entertain! I look forward to the next installment... dt
Sunfire Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Wow, Joe. The steak looks really good, had it not been marinated in beer. Oh well. If I learned one thing from the movie Ratatouille, it's that great chefs take risks to see what is good. Keep up the fun cooking TR's!
TheRapidsNerd Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 A funny thing happened on the way to the coaster forum...a cooking forum broke out! I'm becoming a fan of the Cooking with Joe series. Dude, when I get over to Georgia this next summer, we have to meet up. Another great TR!
ParkTrips Posted December 19, 2007 Author Posted December 19, 2007 ^ Don't get to be too big of a fan, the frequency comes and goes. Usually this is the product of a boring, cold rainy day or whatever. Not to say I don't cook frequently, but being "creative" and documenting it are rare. I still would like to do baking with Joe and Breakfast with Joe... someday
BeemerBoy Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 The experiment with good beer and steak is self-explanatory. I'm still not sure what to make of the pool though. Thanks again, Joe. Priceless.
