verticalzero Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 My local swimming pool has a women only swimming session every Wed evening. I can not catch the train and have a nice swim after work. I have to drive 12 miles to the next pool if I want to go swimming on a Wed. Do you think this is wrong ( The sex descrimination act we have in the UK) and why not have men only swimming (people would class this with gays only) or just have it mixed all the time 7 days a week. Links: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/4143394.stm and http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/4364920.stm I would like to know your views please.
IceDragon Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 it does seem a bit racist, however, white people arent allowed to be racist toward black people as it would be really offensive and racist, although theyre allowed to call us crackers and the likes lifes just not fair
larrygator Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 ^If it helps keep women in shape it is a good idea, there are too many obese chicks in this world.
BarryH Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 You've got the use of the pool 6 other nights of the week. I don't see a problem.
SonOfBeastSucks Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 No, I do not think it is wrong at all. I can honestly see where women are coming from whan they say they want one night swiiming without men around.
Mushroom Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Its all down to religon. I think it is Muslim or something where women aren't allowed to 'show' themselves to other men other than their partners.
Carnage Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 So it's "wrong" to let women swim on a night where they don't have to worry about getting stared at by a bunch of creepy men? There's women only gyms as well, same idea. Isn't calling that "discrimination" kind of like blaming the rape victim for wearing revealing clothing?
Luxo Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Most pools in America have an adult swim session. Age descrimination!!
ParkTrips Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 it does seem a bit racist look up the goddamn definition of racist and you will see that you sound like a moron for using it in this context. God I HATE people using that word when half the time what they are discussin has nothing to do with racism.
BarryH Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Probably the better word to use here is "discrimination." Racism is based on race.
jamesdillaman Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Yeah, I'd expect you to say that Barry, being "the man" and all. I think it's fine, as long as there's a viewing room with one way glass for the guys. In fact if that's the case, I strongly SUPPORT women only in the pool during that time. -James "j/k, so don't hate" Dillaman
Homer Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Speaking of which, why are you complaining? The only women that swim during these hours would probably be lesbians anyways, and not the pretty kind either.
jamesdillaman Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 ^ Or maybe women who just want to swim without guys trying to brush up against them in the pool... maybe so many young girls in the UK get pregnant from too many co-ed swimming sessions, and they're trying to solve the problem.
coastrfreak2000 Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Or maybe some women just simply don't feel comfotable going in front of guys in their bathing suits.
Hercules Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 it does seem a bit racist look up the goddamn definition of racist and you will see that you sound like a moron for using it in this context. God I HATE people using that word when half the time what they are discussin has nothing to do with racism. Same. Anyway, there are times for adult swim at pools, is that wrong? Should the kids be rebeling because they aren't over the age of 18? Is that so-called "racist"?
Carnage Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Probably the better word to use here is "discrimination." Racism is based on race. No, that is not the better word. This has nothing to do with discrimination. Is it discrimination when people not on the TPR trips are excluded from ERT? Is it discrimination when they won't let me into a hockey game even though I don't have a ticket? Is it discrimination when they won't let me into a women only gym? Business's are free to limit their customers as they see fit. Within reason of course. though this case doesn't come close to offensive.
The Cheat Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Dude, when I saw the title of this thread I was sure it was gonna be a PTR. Now I'm disappointed.
ginzo Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Business's are free to limit their customers as they see fit. Actually, it depends on the business. My employer, being a utility company, isn't allowed to deny service to anyone, by law. If we offer a service in the customer's area, we have to sell it to them. No matter how annoying they are. I do agree that this is a pretty silly issue to get worked up about. It's just a pool.
TheBannedKid Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 If you have a problem with it then go get a sex change...
BarryH Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 I'm picturing a "Busom Buddies" moment here. A man desperate to have a swim during ladies' night at the pool dressed up like a woman. Wacky comedy follows! I wonder if there should be a "Man's Night" at the pool. Then again, that has homosexual connotations. I still think this is no big deal, as everyone else can enjoy the pool the other 6 nights of the week!
Carnage Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Business's are free to limit their customers as they see fit. Actually, it depends on the business. I do agree that this is a pretty silly issue to get worked up about. It's just a pool. That's why I said "within reason". I know there are exceptions. If the pool had a "no muslims day" THAT would be racist.
USRoadTripper Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 To me, it would depend on where the pool is. If it's in a gym that you pay for, and those women-only policies were in place when you decided to join, I see no issue with it. You chose to be a part of a gym that has it. If you're talking about a public access tax payer funded pool in a city park, I think it's wrong to deny anyone access to it whenever they want. Your tax dollars are paying for it, and if you want to swim on Wednesdays, you should be able to swim on Wednesdays. And if mixed sex swimming bothers women that badly, they need to join a women-only health club. -Julie
Carnage Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 I wonder if there should be a "Man's Night" at the pool. Then again, that has homosexual connotations. How does that have homosexual connotations? Just because something is a "man's night" doesn't automatically mean it's going to be an orgy night. Or are you just speaking from personaly experience Barry?
