whats up Paramount?

Recommended Posts

As perhaps a recent change in budgeting, Paramounts Great America is turning to crap, start with Stealth. They decide to build a prototype, one of a kind flying coaster just to re-locate it 3 years later? Tidal Wave(aka "greased lightning") they removed it, supposidly sell it back to Schwarskopf, only to have it sit it a Six Fags parking lot as "donor parts". Great America freed up alot of space with the removal of both those rides not to replace them with anything. The park has added very little to keep attendance up, there are no promotional events(haloween themed nights) it is the same park that i visited 12 years ago. Sure, there is a new water park occupying the acerage that steath once did, but an entire water park in the same area as ONE coaster?? they're lame...and what of the Tidal Wave's space?

im with you on 'what's up?'

I got a season pass there this year for the first time since 2000. I wanted to kinda relive the fun of going there weeknights after 6 to get on all the fun rides and have a blast for two hours. After two visits I realized that there were some serious voids.

I remember a lot of great times hitting up vortex, demon, drop zone, grizzly, days of thunder, orleans orbit, greezed lightning, stealth and top gun. I seriously missed the three big ones: OO, Stealth and GL. If they made more money with the new water park, great. I understand. It just is not the same or as fun at all. They added survivor which was a great baby step back to what the place was.

I'm going to be watching very closely to see what happens in the next few years with hope that the place will do something with the limited land they have left. I took a survey on their site in hope that somebody with power will read what I had to say and take into consideration that there still is a percentage of their audience that cares about new attractions.

I have to jump in on this one. Have any of you even been in the water park??? I went their once and I could barely spend an hour or two in there. They do have a little crowd, but the whole crowed rushes for the boomerang slide and nothing else. Everything else is just boring and you don't really wanna ride after the first ride. They have a couple of cool body slides from manteca (drop and twist), but you cant fill a water park with that. They have a lazy river that's actually fun but its short and you HAVE to be in a tube or you will get yelled at and you cant have a second one to put your feet on even when you are one of the only 10 people there. The place is ok on a empty day for a little break from coasters, but its nothing great. They only made it to fill it with the most overpriced crap they could find that relates to the water park and get you to buy it. That's the only reason they didn't just buy a second flying dutchman ride for carowinds. Its sad how the stealth station is now the line for the water park.

My turn to jump into the bandwagon as well. I haven't been there since 1999 but from everything I'm seeing, all of the original rides are being ripped out and left as is...nothing to replace. I haven't been into the waterpark either but they could use a ton more if they want to pull in tons of people. I really wish they didn't rip out Tidal Wave/Greased Lightnin' as that was a classic for them...Orbit too. That ride's special as it was my first inverting flatride. Triple Play was yet another fun flat. I remember the illusion of flying through the window on the nearby building while zipping past Vortex. Personally, I haven't really cared to visit PGA lately as most of their coasters seem short/mediocre...I wish they would restore some of their classics (too late for GL anyway) and also bring in something major (New coaster...nothing mediocre). Ok...I'm done with my PGA rant.

For all the people who complain about "OMG NO STEALTH AND GL IT SUCKS NOW" all I can say is be glad you still got some good rides like vortex, top gun, invertigo and drop zone. I can see what you mean that its worse than it use to be because they got rid of some of the rides, but there are still some awesome ones there. I actually got a season pass and have been there 6 times this year. Also remember you got ummm.... survivor. Also remember as Angry_Gumball says "I believe they're pwn3d by CF now" (with they're being paramount's) means they were screwed financially so stopped caring about what I call the "test park." (test park is the park that gets rides for testing and then the ride is either cloned in other parks or moved to another park if its good and if its bad its left there to screw the test parks people over.)

I just had to say this I find it annoying when people don't care about old coasters and rides just because they got rid of some new ones. I didn't see this many people complain when they completely redid great america (actually I wasn't really old enough to hear people complain), but still sometimes when they change they get better. If you dont like what they did with PGA then head over to SFMW and stop bitching that PGA got rid of a few rides. IMO its more of a family park. kind of like what would happen if SCBB and SFMW had a baby.

although grizzly sucks horribly and should be pulled out this second.

to both of you(the Jew and J3W). The Jew, i don't doubt the monetary success in the water park, as far as revenue, i'm sure it does them great, But as J3W stated, just because you pay to get into a wather park doesen't mean you enjoyed it. Both are by far valid points. My Post is more dedicated to the dissapearance of their coasters, without the addition of anything new. Granted, I haven't been on Survivor yet, however i'm not sure it fills my "thrill ride" cup . Perhaps Cedar Fair will turn it around and make that place work. To consider the newest coaster standing in the park(besides "survivor") An intimin hang and bang boomerang is hardly an addition, i think i actually perferred Triple Wheel!

Survivor is an ok ride. Its good but its not "OMG this is the best thing since sliced bread" kind of thing. It kind of hurts IMO. Its a fun ride and the line moves really fast when its full. It dosnt work if the track is barely wet. I think its gonna stay but they might have non-prototype versions of them (and better theming I mean wtf themeing it after survivor???)

invertigo is a vekoma??? why did you call it intamin and its smooth as glass. Also I said they made it so you have to by a lot to get in. I ment that they have like 300 shops spread around selling $11 swimsuits and $8 sunblock and have $7 lockers just so its admission free, but there still is a lot of stuff you can buy their.

Ok here is my bit - First off Boomerang Bay was a great concept and as stated before is a bigger money maker than a new coaster. . . but I have always thought removing Stealth was a mistake, the Grizzly takes up quite a footprint as well and there would have been plenty of room to expand into the employee parking area, or what about all of the land still vacant from the Whizzer that had already been cleared for the TA2K we lost to PKD

Ok my turn.

As my home park I love it no matter what.

But having said that..

They have lost some great coasters, 2 of my favs, and what was put in to 'replace' them just doesn't cut it for me anyway. I will still get my season pass and go there as much as I can, the coasters they still have provide me with a good time and make the trip worth it. This season they are having a Halloween thing and the park is open weekends until November- that's the latest I can ever remember it closing for the season.

Does PGA have room for a new coaster? Yes. There is space where Whizzer used to be and since the Pictorium isn't used anymore, why not get rid of it and open up that area too? Is that not enough room for a coaster?

Whether or not Cedar Fair decides to give us one who knows. I'm hoping they will. If not, that's ok, it won't keep me from going but I can't say I wouldn't be dissappointed.

I never understood everyone's love of Stealth. Does anyone else remember the insane load and unload times and the constant break downs? Should I even get into the extremely rough ride it gave and the one train operations?

To each their own but I thought Stealth was very sub par. Boom Bay is still a work in progress but I would take the water slides over that coaster any day of the week.

I know that stealth wasn't the best ride. It was another ride though. I do remember the wait times as well. I only went in after 6 so the lines weren't bad at all. Definitely need another good ride to make for a good solid day there. Rapids is a good crowd pleaser but isnt great for everyday.

a couple things 1. its a vekoma and 2. its a prototype what do you expect it to load like. Its obviously going to break down a lot and its gonna be crowded. Am I mistaken that if its a new ride that is cool and unique its not gonna have extremely long waits to get on because of crowd, train count, and ride length. Its like saying X isn't great because its a crowded prototype ride that breaks and some find rough. Just my opinion.

Go to Canada's Wonderland, see how much they neglect them, and go back to Great America and tell me it sucks...

I wanna go and didnt you guys get italian job and some other cool rides. you got preety much everything I want.

Great America started to plunge when it went from being Mariott's to Paramount's, in my opinion. They did a couple good things, like Drop Zone and something else, but then it slowly declined. When they removed Greezed Lightnin, and put it off as basically junk, I lost a lot of respect for the park.

Hopefully Cedar Fair does something good.

Finally a coaster site with more west coast people. I live on the East Coast I have ridden Borg Assimilator at Carowinds. The load/unload times are terrable but the ride rarely breaks down. At least PGA has flats though Carowinds has little to no major flats at all.

Yeah, Carowinds seemed to "fix" the ride. It's pretty reliable. Most of the time they are running two trains, but at first they only ran one train (even on busy days). It's a popular ride.

Well Cedar Fair didn't seem to care that PKI already had a Huss Giant Frisbee whan they built one did they? Plus v2 isn't a standard Impulse so it isn't like they would be building the exact same thing, otherwise there isn't a heck of alot that will fit in that spot without tearing the stupid turbo theater out
