Is this a coaster?

An Alpine Slide has to be a complete circut and have a lift hill to be considered a coaster to me. All that seperates it (The Alpine Slide I described) from a bobsled coaster is the means of braking, which are the same as scenic railways.

I count Alpine Coasters as coasters because they free wheel, run on rails, have a lift hill and are powered by gravity. If anything Apline Coasters are more of a coaster than Mack/Intamin Bobsleds. I certainly wouldn't count an Alpine Slide as a coaster.

I wouldn't question a launched coaster as the lift is merely replaced by the launch and the ride still fits all the other criteria. Powered coasters are often held back from free wheeling by the motors on downhill sections and only really powered up the hills so they still pretty much meet all the criteria.

 

Using Wiktionary the definition of a roller coaster is "An amusement ride consisting of a buggy on a track that rises and falls and twists and turns." So by that Alpine Coasters can certainly be regarded as a coaster.

 

Ultimately my count is my own and it's up to indivduals to decide what counts and what doesn't.

^ Alpine coasters don't go up (exept on the lifthill offcourse) so they don't meet all the criteria. To me they're just Alpine slides on tracks, so not a credit.

It doesn't go up plus you can brake and stop wherever you want to, so no IMO it doesn't count, but i would understand if other people count it since it feels really "coaster-ish" and it meets a lot of the criteria (rolling down with gravity n'all). I myself sometimes doubt if it is a coaster or not, but everytime its the fact that it has brakes that convinces me its not.

 

Scenic Railways have brakemans, yes, but that is something else since the the brakeman always brakes at the same critical parts of the coaster every time, plus its an professional, plus Scenic Railways go up, so those i would count as coasters.

Do bunny hills not count as going up hill? I know some of these Alpine Coasters have lots of bunny hills so would this satisfy the argument that a coaster has to go up hill?

Ow, I dindn't know Alpine Coasters could have bunny hills, but still, its the brakes on the cars that don't make it a coaster IMO.

^^ Alpine coasters/slides are moron proof. They were build so can do a complete stop and still get it going again without getting off. That's why they NEVER go up or have any flat sections.

 

The bunny hills you mean are actually a series of small drops. They may look like bunny hops on video's or photo's, but that's cause they are build on slopes that seem to be level on the video.

They have it listed as a coaster in Roller Coaster Tycoon 3- so it must be a coaster!

Well they also say Jeff Johnson credits are coasters too.

 

I'd probably count this one as a coaster since it runs on rails. It contains all the basic elements for a gravity powered coaster, and while it may be braked by the rider,it has coaster qualities.

See this is one of the reasons I still don't have a credit count, that and the fact I really just don't care.

 

But I'm with Robb, to me its pretty obvious what is a coaster and what is not and yes the more you have to justify it the less likely it is actualy a coaster.

 

I pretty much fly with the 'if it's on RCDB' it counts.

But at the same time, if the ride vehicle is allowed to leave the track at anytime (as in with a Mack water coaster) then I DON'T count it.
