TPR Front Page RE-Design Contest!
BeemerBoy replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
One small detail that seems pretty cool is what AlmereStars did with the Club TPR font on his tabs. That's a nice touch. I also kind of like the content boxes he created. I don't know if that'd be too much to integrate into David's/DKR's designs, but it's the best look I've seen yet for Facebook, "Video of the Day," etc. -

I'm just throwing David's (ILoveRides) back up here so these are all together on one page for comparison's sake. -

David, you did a great job of fusing Apple and TPR. Really, that looks great! And you know it's a great design when you have to stare at it for a while to find "flaws," for lack of a better word. Couple thoughts: - Are we doing away with the tagline? Personally, I've never been a huge fan of it, but never hated it either. I think your vision of the homepage marries fun and professionalism perfectly without it. Just a thought. - I'm not quite sure about the size of the main picture. Maybe it translates better in a full screen view? With that said, I'm torn after looking at DKR's "re-imagined" take on your concept. I like the slimmed-down version of the picture, with a little more content underneath it. But then again, yours just looks so good too. - The more I type, the more confused I get. -

"Minimalist" doesn't necessarily convey the "fun" aspect that TPR represents either. I love Apple's site, but it's really more of an overall "functionality" vibe. Combining the two is certainly difficult. -

^^ The one thing that did catch my eye with that update is the way the dropdown box and "update" categories were highlighted with red, green, and blue. It was subtle enough to work for my eyes. -

I kind of dig that look as well. -

I guess I'm liking a combination of Doug's and DKR's the best.....although stuff is updating so quick that it's hard to keep up while typing this and keeping a train of thought about what I've seen so far. One thing that I'll just put out there for what it's worth is the "sensory overload" the current home page actually has. When Robb made his appearance on CNBC, it got me thinking about how many potential visitors may have clicked on out of sheer curiosity, and so I tried to take the mindset of a complete outsider who may be entering "our world" for the very first time. If someone were to click on the current home page, there really is a LOT going on there. I'm a regular, so my routine is the same each and every time - I basically find everything I need in some way, shape, or form on the main forum (and I know how to get there quickly). But for a brand new visitor, where do you even start? I'm with Chroniq when it comes to simplicity and clean lines. Couple that with Robb's vision of more images > more words, and it seems that would be the correct track to scale down the explosion of information that's currently presented. Just brainstorming here, but (again, taking the mindset of an "outsider") in looking at the current home page, as well as both of my favorite submissions so far, several of the categories just seem rather "vague." For instance, "Theme Park Review Updates" and "Park News, Trip Reports, Etc." seem somewhat similar, and perhaps could be considered one in the same to some folks. Considering the consistent influx of new ride announcements, official TPR park visits/media day events/etc., Adam's news snippets, construction updates, etc., would a specific column along the lines of "Worldwide Theme Park News" work better? Perhaps you could still have the "official TPR Reports" (park visits, media days, Trips, Bashes, etc.) highlighted in some way to stand out? And when it was time to retire those "official TPR Reports" (park visits, media days, Trips, Bashes, etc.), could you then move them to a column listed "Year-In-Review," which would stack the stories in sequential order as the year progresses (similar to how it appears on the current left hand side of the home page)? That could leave member trip reports, podcasts, Game Exchange updates, and some of the more popular ongoing threads (Shane's Attic, Big Mike, Ice Bat, etc.) a separate spotlighted column? "Member Trip Reports, Park Visits, etc."? Does that work? I might even be confusing myself by this point. Also, would changing "Announcements" to something a bit more specific make sense? Maybe "Trip / Event Announcements"? And finally, this is just a pet peeve of mine, but any "random" category should be near the bottom of a page. I love the idea of a "potpourri" category of sorts because it's fun, but the word random has always bothered me for some strange reason when it's displayed prominently. It seems to convey a sense of "misguidedness," or "laziness," if that makes any sense. Honestly though, like others, I'm not a person who cares much for change for the sake of change, but I really like the way the designs are progressing! Tip of the cap to all the designers who have pitched in to this point. I hope my 2 cents can be used in some helpful way. -

The current text seems just fine to me. I also think a combination of Doug's and Chris' submissions is "headed in the right direction." -

I made my share of mistakes in 2011. Not taking a picture with Ice Bat back in October tops the list. -
Joey, I'm guessing we might have been over-thinking the whole thing. After you mentioned those other areas, I looked at the aerial view of the park. And after reading the "leaked" plans on another site (Sidebar: Of which the author states, "Every page is stamped 'Confidential,' so I'm not supposed to be looking at them or telling you about them, and I'm certainly not going to tell you where I got access to them, so don't even bother asking. ["But I'm still gonna post it on the site anyway."]), the Jaws site just seems like a no-brainer. And if both the bottom line figures, and J.K. Rowling say that Potterburg will expand, then it will expand one way or another, to wherever it makes most sense. Unfortunately for many of us, Jaws just happened to make the most sense schematically and logistically speaking. This is still just an assumption on my part, but when looking at the area, it seems to fit exactly what they need. The Jaws/Amity area doesn't really have extensive infrastructure that needs massive demolition in order to build exactly what they need from the ground up. Theoretically anyway, after flattening the area, it would appear to provide a great blank canvas to create a custom built new land, for whatever their needs, rather than trying to reconfigure the large pre-existing buildings on the other sites you mentioned. On top of that, the location also forces people to find their way to the furthest part of the part, thus helping crowd control somewhat? And if the proposed train ride connecting both parts is true, it also seems like a fairly logical location for that addition as well, based on the rumored plans anyway. I guess basically what I'm saying is that this was gonna happen regardless. Jaws was just an unfortunate victim of time, location, and circumstance. I doubt Universal will miss the daily operating costs or the yearly scheduled rehab costs of an outdoor water ride either.
