Guess which cruise line just signed a deal with Mattel to offer a $350-per-person Barbie experience on all their ships? As much as that sounds like something Carnival would do, this is actually a Royal Caribbean offering. Way to reinforce gender stereotypes. And who knew that Barbie⢠in a Mermaid Tale 2 was a hit movie?

It's hilarious how slow the faux-SLC goes through some of the elements. -

The Voyage may have been the best woodie in the past, but it's seen better days. -
Here's a better graphic illustration (Green are positive magnets, red are negative, or vice versa): With LIMs, the timing isn't as important, the copper fins on the car will try to catch up to the traveling wave (which you can see in the animation is moving slightly faster than the car). With LSMs, the switching of the electromagnets from positive to negative must be precisely timed as the magnet on the car passes over them.
-
That's a nice graphic, but it's completely wrong. The LSM part is correctish. The electro-magnets behind and in front of the train push/pull big heavy permanent magnets on the train. The downsides are that, as mentioned above, the timing has to be very precise, and because you have to know exactly where the magnet on the train is, you can't have more than one magnet on a train. That's why most LIM rides are either a single car (Superman at SFMM) or use a sled to push the car (Rock'n'Roller Coaster). In LIMs, the electromagnets pulse in a wave, turning on and off in series like chaser lights: Conductive aluminum or copper plates on the train, through the magic of magnetic induction, try to keep up with this wave, accelerating the train to just under the speed that the wave is traveling. You don't really need to know where the train is, although most LIM launched rides closely monitor train position so that they can only put power to the electromagnets near the train and save electricity.

Any thoughts of having a Schlitterbahn add-on before the Midwest/Texas trip? -
Okay, one last post on Dinosaur. I've been refreshing my memory of the ride circa 1998 with some family members. Some other effects that have since been removed were: smoke and laser "portal" effects after the first time-tunnel and before the second time-tunnel, pyrotechnic sparks in the time tunnel, the pterodactyl that "flies" over the car actually moved, and a smoke ring effect during the meteor shower scene.
-
The ride itself was pretty much the same visually as it is now. The real differences were the motion base programming, the timing of the lighting effects (not revealing dinos until they were right on top of you), and the sound effects. The height limit also went down from 46 inches to 40 inches. I don't think it's anything that would come across well on a video. I also remember reading somewhere (don't quote me on this, I may have manufactured this memory entirely) that the original plans for the ride called for the pterodactyl to "poop" water droplets on cars as it flew overhead, but that effect never made it off the drawing board. EDIT: There is a very dark video of the original ride here:
-
You probably never rode it as "Countdown to Extinction". Before the "Dinosaur" makeover in 2000, at least to my 15-year-old self, the ride was a lot scarier than Indy. Not only was the ride more physically intense, but there were more random things that suddenly popped out at you, and there were various effects that made it seem like you were being constantly chased by the carnotaur and he was about to catch you at any moment. However, some adults still find it scary in its current incarnation:

18/30 for me. Just for fun, I ran through it again tossing a coin for each question (heads=true/tails=false) and got 20/30. FML.
