Cedar Fair and Trash cans
edboxer replied to pkdcoaster's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Dorney is my home park (at least that's where my season pass is even though its farther than Coney Island or Great Misadventure). I have to say, I cannnot tell you how many times I have watched people walk past 4-5 trash cans and then throw their trash on the ground 2 feet in front of a trash can. My biggest problem with parks is that there are no ashtrays. Smokers have no choice but to put their cigarettes out on the ground. If you can have a trash can every 10 feet, couldn't you have ashtrays every 20 feet? And if you watch the people sweeping up, most of what they sweep up is cigarette butts. Even at Great Misadventure, which now has designated smoking areas, there are no ashtrays, and cigarettes butts are everywhere. And to all of you who are about to start preaching the anti-smoke rhetoric, please save your keystrokes for a better use. -

I hope you're joking. Me to..!! If CP can barely fit new coasters....they dont have room for old ones. ..... and are they even aloud to build something that goes over the lake?... I mean...do they own so much of the water space?. Not Lake Erie, the lake that the Mine Ride dives over!!. It could fit in that space! -

I grew up in the area and would hate to see GL closed. I would also hate to dee the Big Dipper destroyed. As to the flyer - why wouldn't it go to CP? They don't have a flyer. As to CP having no room - it would be a great beach coaster or could be fitted into frontier town next to the Mine ride and basically be rebuilt in that lake, flying over the water. FYI, my sig pic was taken on the Double Loop in 1970 something. -

Coney Island Announcment
edboxer replied to CycloneMan's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Well, as a NYer, its been 6 years since 911 and nothing is built in the trade center yet. It will remain first priority before Coney Island. I'm not holding my breath. -
Went to Lake Compounce Saturday, 10/21. 40 degrees, 5-10 MLP winds. We arrived at 5:00. Took a quick ride on BoulderDash. Its running rough even in the first car. Didn't get a lot of air. Took a ride on the train to take some pics (below). Kind of neat how in the background BoulderDash is in focus, but the trees we passed are blurry. Wasted 20 minutes on the Flyers. The ride op loads the cars, then goes out the gate and chats with someone for 10 minutes. She finally does her pre-ride inspection, and 2 people couldn't buckle the belt and had to get off. Next we went to Haunted Graveyard. I cannot begin to say how dissapointed I was. But I guess the 3-year-old kid in back of me said it best: "Mommy, this is boring, when does it end?" Nice concept, some nice effects, but 45 miuntes of going through maze after maze and around every corner someone yells Boo or gunts or moans. I'll take lame CP's Halloweekends Frontier Trail over this anytime. When we get out of there, its totally dark and about 35 degrees. Went back BoulderDash. Rode in the front seat. Totally sick ride. Its flying through the course with ejector air. You can barely see the track in front of you. Totally wild ride. Had to do it again. Left after that. Overall a decent time. But don't waste your money on Haunted Graveyard. But if you're going to Lake Compounce sometime, check out the NE Railroad Museum. Its about 20 minutes East of Lake Compounce on Rt. 6 just over the bridge in Thomaston. They have a 20 mile train ride on old Naugatuck Railroom train, old pullman cars, some with wood enterior. The route is along the Naugatuck River and ends up running along the face of an old dam.

I hadn't seen anyone mention it before (and sorry if it has been), but one of the coolest part of Maverick will be waiting in the station. Check the POV. You can see the train below enter the tunnel through the station tracks. So every 45 seconds or so, a screaming train is gonna run through the station, you'll be able to see and hear it. -

Personally, a loop is a loop, why bother to add just another loop, I don't think it would have added anything. I think that with the focus on low to the ground speed, a loop would feel out of place. Now a string of heartline rolls in the tunnel before the 2nd launch would be cool. -

Initial thoughts: Maverick looks like a lot of fun. Yes its not the biggest, fastest, yadda, but it looks like fun!! Launch vs. lift - if it isn't being lifted via a chain/elevator cable, its launched. The POV video is cool, but it seems to be implying that the ride will run faster than it actually will. If you hit the first airtime hill at the speed in the video, your thighs are gonna be sore! Synchronization. It could be very possible that the two launches will be timed/linked so ensure some dueling like Dueling Dragons lifts. That would be cool. My only kvetch: think how much cooler Maverick would be if it was taking all these turns between all the trees that CP ripped out!! -

I've ridden Kinda Kucky, and those restraints for me (I have a long back), were not comfortable at all. but they are much better than the old restraints on Corkscrew and Draggin Itron!! -

Hmmm, special harnesses for riding side saddle?? Why does this entire thread remind me of the South Park Entity episode (Mr. Garrison invents a new mode of transportation that’s “extra enjoyable” for roughly 10 percent of the population) -
Went to Mt. Olympus on Friday (actually left early to go to ride Avalanche at 9:00 - but they weren't going to run it until later in the morning). First off, I hadn't been there in a few years and was very surprised at how many go-cart tracks had been removed. (Including the one that use to go through the castle) Pegasus - was very much the non-event that I had remembered. Nice easy beginers woodie. Cyclops - still loved the curved drop in front of the station with the ejector airtime in the back row. Zeus seems to have lost some of its power as I got very little air even in the front seat. BTW, all three of these are so short!!! OPA - how do design a bad crazy mouse????? This thing sucked bigtime (they need to tear it down a buy a clone of the Steel Dragon at Waldemeer). Also does 4 rides really consititute an indoor park?? Hades. Rode in the fonrt seat and the next to last seat. Wow, what a difference. Front row - glides along the track, powerful airtime, very smooth. Next to last row - incredible airtime out of the station and elswhere, but in parts of the tunnel and the turns returning to the station, this was as rough as Hercules (DP). How do I rate it - 9 out of 10. I still prefer Balderdash.

Best coaster ride when raining
edboxer replied to verticalzero's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Love riding coasters in the rain, and I've ridden lots in the rain. But the best two were: Dueling Dragons – sitting in the front row, when the train started up the lift hill, all the water that collected in the Dragon heads, dumped on the front row. Then during the ride you get hit by thousands of rain arrows. Rode 6 times. Boulderdash – it was rainy and windy so not only did the train fly but the wind was blowing the rain off the leaves. The train was flying, the rain was pouring, the branches blowing in the wind, I was were soaked, so I rode again! -
Sorry I'll miss you guys, I'll be there on the 12th

While I concur with Villian at Geauga Lake and any boomerang: Thunderbolt @ Kennywood - felt like I was riding down a staircase in cardboard box. CI Cyclone - the last seat over the rear wheels, I dare you - have your chiropractor's number handy cause your tailbone is gonna get smashed into the seat at the bottom of every hill. Gone, but not forgotten - Idora Park Wildcat - riding in the back seat was totally masochistic, great airtime, but coming back down hurt like heck.

SFWOA (aka Geauga Lake) for the flying coaster, 2003? It was 90+ degrees and 90% humidity, the line was crawling like a snail in reverse, there was no shade whatsoever. Then this group of 12-16 old guys in front of us decided they were going to have a "Who's sneakers smell worse" contest by taking their shoes off and passing them to each other. I think they had walked through a manure spreader before coming to the park, it was gaggingly disgusting.

Coney Island Cyclone - the 2nd drop after the Surf Ave turn - ejector air into the lap bar - can be painful. Phoenix - the ejector bunny hops before the final turn and trim break - it dares you to stay in your seat. Boulderdash - the third drop, which is a double down, great airtime and it looks like you are about to hit a tree. MF - the 200ft floater - great airtime (last year at Coaster Mania - I caught a floating camera!) GL Dominator - in the last row, the drop after the midcourse break into the corkscrews is incredible.

Hi, I'd like to add some history here if I can. Decades ago (late 50s/early60s), the company my father worked for held their annual picnics at CLP. My first roller coaster was the Little Dipper. I remember having picnic lunches at the tables by the Blue Streak's turnaround. I hadn't been to CLP for 30+ years until I went back in 2002 (they wouldn't let me ride the Little Dipper). My how things had changed. It seems the only things that hadn't changed were the Carousel, the train and the Blue Streak. The lower level of the ballroom was the games area. Now, all the doors at the lower level are blocked by game and food booths. CLP should really consider re-opening the lower level and expanding their games. Is the ballroom ever used anymore? Using the current map of the park, and my memory of CLP in 50s/60s: Where the video arcade is now was the funhouse. The walkthrough fun house was a classic: barrels, slanted floors, slides, airholes, mirrors etc. I really miss it. The tilt-a-whirl used to reside on the SE corner of Comstock and Park (where the Devil's Den is now). On Comstock between Park and Reed where the Rolloplane is now was the site of the Whip. Next to that where the YoYo is was the original site of the Flying Scooters, and those flying scotters were run just like Knoebels are now - I remember my father scaring the crap out of me snapping the cables. Across the street was the Wild Mouse, an old unbraked WildMouse. Supposedly its somewhere in storage as they don't have the assembly instructions!!! I don't recall where the ferris wheel was located. There were no rides between the Ballroom and Lake. It was open lawn where the picnic games were held (I won a transistor radio in 1961 that still works!!). Going down Park from Comstock, were the Bug, the Teacups, Scrambler and, if memory serves me, the Caterpillar. There were no rides between Matson and Rt 618, it was parking lawn. Across Rt. 618 was Fairyland Forest!! Anyway, just some perspective of CLP as it was 40 years ago.
