SFGAdv or Cedar Point
edboxer replied to the ghost's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
That hasn't been the case last season or this season. I timed it and Nitro was dispatching trains around every 80 seconds. The line was into the switchbacks past the 90 minute sign 2 weeks ago. I know the signs overestimate the wait times but it was a 25 minute wait with all 3 trains running. I was at SFGAdv twice last year, and both times, dispatches on Nitro and el Toro were ver slow. I was in line at the 30 minute marker, and it took over an hour. The second visit we left after 4 hours because we only got 2 rides. Other than walking from el Toro to KK, with a pit-stop, the rest of the time was spent standing inline! -
SFGAdv or Cedar Point
edboxer replied to the ghost's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
CP for several reasons: Early ERT for Hotel guests for several rides including Maverick and MF Probably the most ride ops per coaster of any park and the best/smoothest/fastest ride ops. You can almost set your watch by Magnum XL200 - 1 train goes up the chain every minute. (It seems like 1 train goes up Nitro's chain every 5 minutes and 1 up el Toro's every 4) That also means faster moving ride lines! Coasters by day - beach volleyball by night! However, if you do decide to go to SFGAdv, I'd highly suggest Dorney Park rather than Moreys (its about an hour for SFGAdv. It has a very nice collection of coasters including Steel Force and Talon. It also has the advantage of being one price for both the waterpark and the theme park. So if it gets too hot, or its raining, you can go to the waterpark! -
A few additional suggestions. SFGAdv - Musts: Ka, Toro, Medusa, Nitro. Skips: Great American Scream Machine (because its painful), Rolling Thunder (it hasn't been greased since the 80s), Superman: Ultimate Flight (if you've ridden Tatsu, you'll be very disappointed, especially if you wait more than 15 minutes for it) If you're going to be in NYC anyway - take the D, F, or N Subway to Coney Island and ride the Cyclone and Wonderwheel.

Cedar Point in May, a good idea?
edboxer replied to worknman's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Weekdays in May are great. Go in early May - yeah it may be colder but there are far less crowds. Sundays in May are pretty good too. But I would warn you around late May or early June - Muffleheads. Big black furry "flies" that are everywhere and will be squished and splatted all over you after riding just about any coaster (I killed 37 on TTD on one ride alone) -
First - great little park with a lot of rides on the water or on platforms above the water. Great free parking a 5 minute walk to the gate. I was in Indy/Bloomington for Drum Crops International World Championships. I had a few free hours on Friday morning so I decided to go to Indiana Beach. Talk about in the middle of nowhere!!! 20 minutes on a two lane country road with nothing but corn on either side! The Rides: (rated on a scale of 0 to 10) Steel Hawg - 6. 1 ride. Nice little ride. Cool trim brake before the initial plunge. Not as jerky as I expected. But very short with a long line. Is it worth the trip to IN for the credit - no. Cornball Express and Hoosier Hurricane - the best part about these two coasters is that they are so intertwined that you cannot tell which track is which and which coaster you're on. Cornball Express - 6. 3 rides. Short, but fun. Very nice drop off the lift then spends a lot of time in turns and helixes. Nice banked turns, but very little air. Would have preferred a few more drops to the ground. It seemed more like an enlarged mouse than a small woodie. Hoosier Hurricane - 8. 3 rides. By far the best coaster in the park (that I rode - Lost Coaster of Superstition Mountain was closed, Galaxi had a really long line). Nice drops into the water, great turn around, great double up after the initial drop and nice air on the return.

Well, I have to disagree on CPs traffic problems. There are back-ups going into CP and back-ups getting out of CP - due to width of the roads in Sandusky. You can't take three lanes of traffic coming across the causeway from CP and try to mesh them all into a one lane road! Iits not going to help. You would think the Sandusky would have done something in the last 50 years to alleviate the traffic snarls.

Geauga Lake Discussion Thread
edboxer replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Well, this is indeed a sad event. I grew up in NE Ohio going to Idora Park, Conneaut Lake Park and Geauga Lake. Now all three are gone. My Avatar pic was taken on the Double Loop in the 70s. But as I've said before - the demise of Geauga Lake (and Conneaut Lake Park) has much more to do with the economy of NE Ohio/NW PA than with either Six Flags or CF's ownership. Geauga Lake was a company picnic park for decades - it was empty unless it was Saturday (same with Conneaut and Idora). Now with most of the industries dried up in NE Ohio/NW PA, those company picnics no longer exist. That meant that Geauga Lake had to sustain itself on its own reputation. FYI, I escaped Ohio in 1982 when the area had an unemployment rate of over 27%. Most of my family that worked in the steel industry lost their jobs in the 70s when the mills and factories closed. The fortunate got jobs and the GM plant in Lordstown or the Packard Electric Plant in Warren. The area has never recovered. SF came in and tried to make it another flagship park. But, it quickly suffered from SF's hideous management style - minimal staff, single train operations and long lines. It quickly got a terrible reputation. Most of my family members refused to go back to Geauga after their first visit under SF ownership because it was run so poorly. It was no longer a family friendly atmosphere (picnic areas closed, mandatory admission cost) and why spend the same amount of money as CP and get in less rides? As to CF's ulterior motives, I think CF also quickly realized that Geauga Lake was simply not going to draw the attendance needed to sustain it. IMO, if Dorney didn't have the waterpark included in the price of admission, Dorney would quickly close for the same reasons (Dorney is empty except for Saturdays). -

[NL] Murgatroid!
edboxer replied to edboxer's topic in Roller Coaster Games, Models, and Other Randomness
OK, exactly what do either of you mean by "smoother." Are you referring to the slight jerkiness of the helix which was planned or the slight hesitation at the top of each hill which is realistic, and from a physics standpoint, correct. I'm stumped. -
My latest woodie - its a little woodie that wanders and turns. Some good airtime, ejector and floater. I wanted to make this one unpredictable, so the only sections of straight track are from the brake to the top of the lift hill. Feedback would be greatly appreciated Murgatroid.nltrack Murgatroid [NL]

Okay, so here is my first attempt at recreating an existing coaster. Feedback would be greatly appreciated. It isn't exactly to scale. phoenix.nltrack Recreation of Knoebel's Phoenix

I bought NL on Saturday and have been playing with it. I tried upgrading to 1.7, but the graphics on the coasters I had built went crazy, so I uninstalled 1.7 and reinstalled 1.6. Is this a common problem? Also, I am building a woodie. I tried to color the tunnel black, but it keeps coming out white pine. Is there a trick to coloring wood? Is there a database of coaster recreations?

Opening video: http://www.erietube.com/kickapps/_Let-the-thrills-begin/video/209801/3766.html I love it, the first rider in the front seat - a 93 year old lady that rode the original. -

A couple thoughts: How about "Loose items floating by" - items that floated/were expelled from someone shirt/jacket/pocket, etc. "Historical scientists get their first ride" Newton on a free fall; Einstein on xcellerator...... "Optional ride vehicles" - gurneys, wheel chairs, hot dog carts.... -

Deno's Wonder Wheel - Coney Island An absolutely must ride (at least once - most won't go on a second time). http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3d/Denos_Wonder_Wheel-2.jpg/800px-Denos_Wonder_Wheel-2.jpg -
I'd have to agree with Lakemont. When I was there, you had to look for employees to run the few rides that were actually in working order. Other than Leap the Dips, they could tear the whole place down. Keansburg is a close runner-up. This place screams carnival trash. Another park where you have to locate the employees to run the rides. And you have to keep an eye out for them as well. We were stick on a spin and puke forever while the ride-op flirted.
