Kennywood (KW) Discussion Thread
KPfan replied to DenDen's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
If you can get there at 11 when the park opens head straight to black widow. Phantom and exterminator are usually not open right away so you have some time. Then hit Swingshot and Bayern Kurve. By that point Phantom should be running. Hit that, then Exterminator afterwards if you wish. Next hit Thunderbolt, then Racer and then Jackrabbit. Wrap it up with Skyrocket. On an average day that circuit is 3-4 hours or less. -

The park has clearly spent money on beautification this year. Fresh paint everywhere, lots of landscaping and mulch, plenty of subtle improvements. The park maps do confirm the 4D theater in the old Playdium building. While it's clearly weeks away it's definitely taking shape. Looks like most of the brick work and roofing are done. The facade still needs finished though. I'd guess late June if everything is on schedule. -

Depends on the buyer. It's not beyond being a restoration project if a park has the appropriate equipment and staff. Otherwise it could be a good pile of spare parts. -

Glad to see it reopen. Despite all of the doom and gloom I still hope it can survive. -
We made similar trips last summer. I would vote for option 1 simply because of the mix of parks and culture. Williamsburg is a nice area to tour. We hit BGW twice, water park and KD on separate days. Then we mixed in time in the historic district and a local winery. We even threw in a day at VA beach in between our park visits for some R&R. On the way home we stopped in DC for a half day. We spent a couple days at CP in late summer. Had a blast at the park but the lines were insane. We needed two days just to ride everything. i don't recall much in the area other than the usual shopping and restaurants. I'm sure there are some places if you're willing to drive away from Sandusky. There's always a few hours to Cleveland or Columbus (nice zoo). Or a trip to Cincinnati or Mason (kings island) might be enjoyable if you have the time.

I've been told that Kennywood has either met or plans to meet with Premier Rides regarding a future project. Perhaps something big in the works. -

If you could tear down one coaster

Agree. You may get your wish. The coaster was posted for sale online a month or two ago but is no longer listed. -

I agree. It also raises the question of just what would the adjusted numbers look like and will it be something that the park can work with. It's potentially good news but at the same time that's 11 years of missed opportunities. -
Rode Mean Streak the year it opened but not since then. Was there last month but skipped it based on the negative reviews these days. Went to Kings Dominion this summer. Hurler and Shockwave are my votes for wood and steel. I was at Cedar Point last month but skipped Mean Streak. Rode that the year it opened so I wanted to preserve my appreciation.

Conneaut Lake Park (CLP) Discussion Thread

http://triblive.com/mobile/6894849-96/park-sale-sheriff Maybe some good news for the park. Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office seeks halt to sheriff's sale of Conneaut Lake Park By Bill Vidonic Staff Reporter Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, 3:12 p.m. Conneaut Lake Park is overseen by a charitable trust and should be exempt from paying property taxes, the state Attorney General's Office said Wednesday in a bid to halt a looming sheriff's sale of the storied amusement park. The filing marks the first time the Attorney General's Office has argued that the park should be tax-exempt. “I'm pleased that they feel protective of the public trust. To me, that's really key. It's great to see that happening,” said Mark Turner, executive director of the seven-member Trustees of Conneaut Lake Park Inc. board. At stake are more than $925,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest owed to the county, Sadsbury and Summit townships and the Conneaut School District. All four taxing bodies support a sheriff's sale, scheduled for Nov. 7, to recoup back taxes. “We're leaving this to our attorney and other attorneys in court and the attorney general to figure all of this out,” Crawford County Commission Chairman Francis Weiderspahn Jr. said. The board of trustees said it may seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to avoid a sheriff's sale so it can work out a plan to reorganize and pay off debts. Turner said the board wants to avoid a bankruptcy filing, as it could cost $250,000 in fees. “We hate to do that,” said Turner, also the executive director of the Economic Progress Alliance of Crawford County, which oversees park operations. “We know what the ramifications are. We could enter Chapter 11 and leave it solvent, but we really hate to take that route.” The Attorney General's Office acts as a guardian for the state's nonprofits. Last year, it demanded the removal and reorganization of the park's board of trustees, saying that it failed to insure two historic buildings destroyed by fire and fell behind on taxes. The board resigned June 12 under a consent decree with the Attorney General's Office, and a new board formed. As part of the decree, the old board's insurance company agreed to pay $200,000 to the new board for park expenses. Turner said the board proposed using $100,000 to put a dent in the back taxes, but the taxing bodies rejected that offer. In its filing with Crawford County Court on Wednesday, the attorney general's office said the court ruled in 2003 that the park “constitutes a charitable trust,” and that no one has ever challenged that designation, though “some portions of the park may be taxable” depending on how they're used. The Attorney General's Office said that if the sheriff's sale proceeds, any buyer must use the property as a public park because of the trust. -
LED Lighting On Rides and Midways
KPfan replied to DenDen's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I don't like the ultra vibrant LEDs. Just too much pop for me. Overall, I do like the new lighting packages on Ferris wheels and such. For more traditional parks and rides, I prefer the warmth of incandescent lighting. If they can make LEDs deliver a similar appearance I'd love it. I have the same peeves with Christmas lights. Still a fan of the old C9s. -
Steel Phantom or Phantom's Revenge?
KPfan replied to Beau Mitchell's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I enjoyed the inversions on Steel Phantom but even I admit that they became painful with age. It was sad to see them all removed but the decision made sense. With the speed of the second drop I had hoped for a record setting loop after the ravine. Oh well, maybe the 3rd version will have that along with a 45 degree lift hill. -

Steel Phantom or Phantom's Revenge?
KPfan replied to Beau Mitchell's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I rode the original Steel Phantom on opening day and it was awesome. If it would have been possible to preserve the speed and smoothness then I think it'd still be around today. Sadly, like many other arrow coasters, the ride didn't age well. Phantoms Revenge is a fun ride but I don't think it's truly better than the original. First and second drops are virtually identical. Revenge is smoother on the back half but is somewhat boring with the tiny dips. The way that the trains carry speed with little or no trim brake is probably my favorite element.
