SFNO/Jazzland Discussion Thread
SoCalJasonland replied to SharkTums's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
If you have Hulu, the show "Abandoned S1 E9 - New Orleans DIY" has some good video footage of the local area and inside the park. I don't see much the could be salvaged, a neighborhood that could support a rebuilt park, or reason to spend 100-million plus to reopen a park in an area that will flood again. -

They just shut down California except for some food and medical services. I guess we just found out what an off-season is and know we will find out what a big giant snow day, week, month, etc... is. I guess we can walk to the park for exercise but the children can't play on the swings. Anyway, I would order a giant moose to let everyone know but we all know that Amazon stopped selling non-essential stuff. https://ktla.com/news/california/gov-newsom-issues-statewide-order-for-people-to-stay-at-home-amid-virus-outbreak/ "California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday ordered the state’s 40 million residents to stay at home, restricting non-essential movements to control the spread of the coronavirus that threatens to overwhelm the state’s medical system. “This is a moment we need to make tough decisions,” Newsom said. “We need to recognize reality.” His move came after counties and communities covering about half the state’s population already had issued similar orders. He said the restriction is “open-ended,” and it could raise false hopes if he predicted how long the order might last. People may still leave their homes for walks and exercise and for essential needs such as food and medical care. Restaurant meals can still be delivered to homes. The Democratic governor also announced that he is mobilizing 500 California National Guard troops to help with food distribution, but said they will be in place only for humanitarian reasons. “I don’t believe the people of California need to be told through law enforcement that it’s appropriate just to home isolate,” he said. ..." The biggest problem with a sale of Magic Mountain is that the value of entertainment & travel companies has collapsed, but the land value is still high in Santa Clarita. When or if Magic Mountain is sold, it will likely be for real estate development as we have a major home shortage but no theme park shortage. Cedar Fair has a high debt load, so I don't see them acquiring an expensive property at this point. It also seems too far away for Disney or Universal to care about it. The best case scenario is that Herschend decides to enter the So Cal market, but that is wishful thinking. Hey, Dolly, we love you out here in Cali, please by Magic Mountains for us. Sorry, did I make Mountains plural? I have DollyWood because I saw Magic Mountains does have a nice ring to it Did everyone know that they can still ride their favorite coasters and rides on Themepark Reviews Youtube Channel? Thanks for making it possible! [youtu_be] [/youtu_be]

I held Cedar Fair, Disney, and Six Flags stocks of approx $3,000 each in the last 2008 recession. Only Six Flags disappointed me in the long-run. Their CEO recently ran away from the company and that was before this virus issue and the pending, hopefully mild, recession that will eventually follow. The customer service surveys about should we expand into extreme trampoline parks should have been the first sign that they were not meeting growth forecasts and were batting around ideas. I know that many of you are dying to respond that a recession is impossible with Trump and the Republicans in office, and I hope you are correct. I just see us going for a minimum of two quarters of negative growth at this point, and you can chime-in in a couple of months if I am incorrect. I don't blame Trump for the virus or wish that the US fails, but I am concerned about short-term economic growth and how to protect my retirement in the long-run. I know that it is probably too late to sell stock at this point unless it is Carnival or Six Flags. Those companies that already have high debt levels compared to book values have been borrowing beyond their means and it will result in some new bankruptcies if there is an US or global recession. We will also find out on Monday if Friday was a "dead cat bounce" or belief in a market recovery. I get that this is not a political or financial forum and I realize the irony that we elected a reality TV star as president because our professional politicians were even more disappointing. We have gotten through much worse as a country, and we will survive this a little battered and bruised for the better.

This is even getting uglier. University California Riverside has canceled in-person classes for the rest of the quarter. I heard some other school districts are talking about canceling the semester. I wanted to believe this was fake too. I heard too many people talk about Ebola and Zika thinking those were third-world problems. When I saw online comments that their US family members were in central China at offices of US manufacturers, I realized that the third-world has their international airports now, and their problems are ours too. Just like Africanized bees, fire ants, pythons in Florida or invasive carp; we are going to have more problems now and I need to get used to it, I can't go nuts because Knott's and Magic Mountain have been closed for one-day. I need to be like Tina and find my old copy of Rollercoaster Tycoon and a CD drive or something.

Disneyland closing Saturday, March 14th for Corona Virus until at least the end of March. "Update on Disneyland Resort Operations While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland Resort, after carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, beginning the morning of March 14 through the end of the month. The Hotels of Disneyland Resort will remain open until Monday, March 16 to give guests the ability to make necessary travel arrangements; Downtown Disney will remain open. We will monitor the ongoing situation and follow the advice and guidance of federal and state officials and health agencies. Disney will continue to pay cast members during this time. Disneyland Resort will work with guests who wish to change or cancel their visits, and will provide refunds to those who have hotel bookings during this closure period. We anticipate heavy call volume over the next several days and appreciate guests’ patience as we work hard to respond to all inquiries. Please contact The Walt Disney Travel Company for questions and cancellations at (714) 520-5050."

Six Flags is almost down 50% from the high in the past year when it topped out at $59.52. They cut the dividend today from $3.32 per year to $1.00 per year or a 70% cut making the new yield to 3.14% based upon a $31.89 share price. I thought it would take a recession to get an almost 50% off sale on their stock, but it only took good corporate leadership.

Six Flags has always tried to keep their overhead low by not having too many 'non essential' parts in stock since it could be years before those parts are technically 'paid' for, which sucks but that's the way Six Flags has chosen to do business for better or (definitely) for worse. I need to correct my statement when I said that the park doesn't have a budget for the LSMs, they actually do have a budget for them, but it's really small and they blow through it every year. They lose more motors than they repair so they can't keep up with it and end up moving motors around on the track and under-powering the remaining ones. It's also cheaper for the park to wait until they have a decent amount that need to be replaced and buy them all at once. To my knowledge Intamin doesn't actually support the motors as it was a contracted part and the park has been in turn contracting a highly specialized mechanic that repairs them (and since it's so specialized it's quite a bit of money). At the end of the day the park would need a LOT more budget allocated to the maintenance of the LSMs than they currently have, so if the park can get more motors at a discount (even if they are used), they're going to jump on that chance. Dreamworld's motors would be giving Superman a new lease on life at a pretty good discount. **Speculation time** I'm not even sure that down the line if the park/company will ever spend the necessary money for Superman; we might end up down to one side permanently as motors start to get cannibalized from one side of the track to feed the other. This is possibly the slow death of the ride and Dreamworld's motors are prolonging it for a bit. Unless they can come up with another gimmick like they did in 2011 where they can market it again as a 'new' experience and justify higher expenses for a tangible ROI, the ride has a limited lease on life IMO. I'm not even sure if I'd miss Superman for anything other than its historical value. **/End speculation time** Overall I find the business decisions that Magic Mountain makes very fascinating as they constantly seem to have a chicken and egg problem they're always on the wrong side of. Magic Mountain did have that poorly illustrated question on their customer survey about changing Superman into a continuous circuit coaster with some sort of tophat added to it and it would make sense at the end of the current motors' lifespans. I can see them making Superman taller or faster to claim a new record. It will be called Superman II - defeating General Zod!

As far as comfort collars, I am 6' tall and 190 lbs. You get jerked pretty hard on some of the elements. The collar wasn't that tight on my neck so it slipped around. I am just saying if you get your neck hit, there is an easy solution and you don't have to quit riding it. As far as the closed flat rides, they were the Round-Up and Himalaya/Musik Express in Gothic City. Other than Crazanity, drop tower, and the bumper cars though, the rest of the flat rides had bored-looking attendants standing in the ride entrance. I didn't see anyone on the pirate ship, swings, or scrambler any time I walked by. Oh, and I forgot the upcharge attractions, go-carts, and giant arch swing ride were closed too. It was still worth it having all of those coasters practically to myself. I am like Cartman and hate lines. You get a good workout in this park. If I spent 6 1/2 hours at Knott's, my Fitbit would be about 10,000 steps and 15 floors from climbing some coaster steps. The same time at Magic Mountain yesterday was 17,000 steps and 73 floors. This is close to climbing a 730' tall hill.

I went to Magic Mountain on Wednesday and had the best day ever at the park. The only closed rides that I could see were the three water rides that are drained and closed for the season, Riddlers Revenge, the unhelpful Honda funicular, and a few of the flat rides. The park was so dead that Superman was the only ride with a longer than one train wait. It was the first time that I have been able to get multiple rides on Full Throttle, Tatsu and Twisted Colossus without having to leave the station as long as I was willing to pick any open row in the middle. I figured out that it takes me exactly five consecutive rides on Tatsu in the back of the train before I am too dizzy for a sixth ride. It is also nice to be the only one at the bar in the back of the park, so you get served promptly. I must admit I hated my first lap on West Coast Racers as I had my hands in the air and the uncomfortable collar hit me hard in my neck three times. I was sitting there in the pitstop watching Justin Bieber on the screen realizing my life had hit a low point when I decided to hold the collar open as far as I could with my hands during the second half of the ride instead of putting them up in the air. This ride suddenly went from my least favorite to one of the better ones in the park. The key to this ride is holding the collar open to your shoulder blades during the entire ride and all of the pain goes away making it is somehwhat fun. At least I went on it another six or seven times without any more pain and enjoyed it. Yep, even WCR was borderline empty - 2 trains with 2 people riding on this lap Have you ever seen only three people in line for Tatsu before?

So $12 per ride? No fun yeah, but not really unheard of... And hey I'll be there in 3 weeks so hey better go while there's the opportunity before it does shut down! When the hell else will I get to ride Takabisha? I'll tell ya, I wont. So I ok with it I would definitely pay to visit once for that coaster alone if I didn't have to cover the airfare from California. I guess it is a balancing act. If they charge too little, the place is packed with two-hour lines with no fun for anyone. If they charge too much, not enough people attend to cover their costs and they go belly up. Hopefully, they have market figured out and react quickly to attendance figures to change prices if needed.

I visited the park on Tuesday for a few hours. Mystery Lodge is still locked up tight with no changes visible from the outside. The Mystery Lodge gift shop is open but the clerk didn't know anything about a new attraction from Triotech. I find it interesting that Knott's website lists Pony Express closed for Maintenance, but Mystery Lodge is closed for Refurbishment. The attraction is pretty much Pepper's ghost effect for the entire time, so not much in the way of effects or technology. I also took a ride on Voyage to Iron Reef and checked out the arcade. The arcade attendant told me the waiting area for the old VR ride is going to be used for Ice Ball and the attraction portion is not likely to be used for the arcade. No one in the arcade or ride heard of a new Triotech attraction at the park. The rest of the park was dead except for the line for the log ride. Ghostrider was only loading one train and only had a train or two waits for the front and last rows, and Xcelerator had a four-person wait for the front row at 1 pm. closer view now Ice Ball per Northwind's request closed Ghost Town VR in arcade shut doors to the old attraction
