Track Spottings!
QueerRudie replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
With all the fury that the new SW6 project at Alton Towers has foddred, I'm going to put my vote there.... it just seems right (Color wise) as the Old Corkscrew coaster.... and why break from tradition in that arena? -
Intreguing... If I were to pick up a magazine about parks etc. I'd be looking for the following: A 'major' article on ONE park in depth- that is, it's history, it's rides, it's layout, food options, shows, etc. that was very thorough in coverage. A few 'minor' articles on particular rides/shows/attractions that are noteworth. Select news on future attractions of note, as well as changes in the amusement industry. Being an Airline person, I find the best magazine that addresses things like this is "Airline World" magazine, from the UK. It's got all of the above- and is easily readable about the Airlines. I reccommend picking it up- as it could give you a clue to how I like my information presented to me.

US Airways A320 crash lands in Hudson
QueerRudie replied to TheHulk's topic in Random, Random, Random
Currently being in the airline industry- for a few more months at least, I know that it's an amazing thing to see any plane handled in such an amazing fashion. First: There were survivors of a water landing. A little Aircraft Physics 101 on that one. ANY plane with engines under the wing is inherently is NOT going to land smoothly on water. The engines create an 'obsticle' under the wings, which itself can cause more damage than impact itself. The Pilot in Command deserves a great deal of kudos for being able to put the plane down in the Hudson without a fatality on that one. Second: Cold water on a colder day: Fast response helped to keep everyody not only alive, but with minor injuries as a result. There is a saying in the airline industry: Whenver a plane goes down, you knew somebody on it; that's not only a legend, but it's true so much. I'm thankful that every landing has been safe for me- and I pray that all the landings we all make are the same way. We were blessed on this one. I was here in DC for when AirFlorida 90 went in- and the results were far worse. Comparisons of the two should be limited to this: They landed in a river. Period. Both were under different circumstances- and under VERY different conditons. The big difference between the two is this: One had a VERY experienced crew, the other, a very inexperienced crew under severe adverse conditons they should NOT have every been allowed to fly in. I'm one to belive that flying is inherently safe, as I travel around 100K miles annually by air. This proves that with the right crew, it will continue to be. -

Let's think about this for a brief second... 1.) a bailout would require spending on mechanical devices, just like the car industry... that money would be going to Europe and Asia, not the USA. 2.) It would also require money going to the 'stars' and 'directors' of such things...half of whom are NON us residents- Meaning even more money would go overseas.... 3.) If there is ANY need to bail out porn, it would be to 'improve' the writing and acting therein. That COULD be a good thing- we could get real actors in there- Such as (IMHO!) Jason Statham (in "Lock, Stock and TWO HUGE BARRELS") or George Clooney ("Ocean's 69.") Just my .02 worth-

Shane once again has a great point... A park like that, with a good lineup of starting rides, should in theory be a winner- but the 'location, location, location' is the key factor. Myrtle beach is one of the critical factors in any good operation- wherever it is. The park itself looked good, although some of the 'artwork' to me appeared a bit cheesy- but then again that's not a park crieteria for being succesful. In all reality, if they could have held on for a few seasons, it might have been a different outcome from what we've got today. It was very interesting to see just how full and coplete the park was- I've only been to one park when it was 'new' (FT) and I liked the 'new park smell' that it had abounding. I can only hop the concept doesn't die, and that we see an improved version of the park in the future- as a 'HRP' in a better location and with better financing might turn out to be a real blockbuster.

Texas Inmate Pulls Out Eye, Eats It
QueerRudie replied to SharkTums's topic in Random, Random, Random
Would it have been served on Eyce? -
A great program which is now historic as it shows what a park ONCE looked like before it closed.... For such a program NOT to have had an editied 'By the way, the park closed on XX date' is going to be a bit misleading for the GP who might actually wish to venture forth to see it.... As I can picture Ma and Pa Jones of Alabama going to Myrtle beach and walking up to the gates going "Now wahhhr did they put them tharr rides??"

I've been waiting a while for an opportunity like this... When the jury was polled over the quesiton of whether or not to execute this inmate, they took a poll.... and the EYES had it. -
Coca Cola... Without question. I choose my airline based upon the soda they serve on board. That and their gin type. Gin is good, too.... There IS gin, right?

Quassy Amusement Park Discussion Thread
QueerRudie replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Fantastic design. I think it's high-time that we see a rejuvination of the wooden junior coaster, as it's been a LONG time since we've had an outbreak of them- as in years. -

Man... Talk about VINTAGE! I remember KidsWorld doing a number of 'theme park' segments over the years; this one I'd not seen- But I (VAGUELY) remember one where they had a 'Chicken Exit' on a particular coaster. (I might screw this one up- but I think it was Worlds Of Fun; I am most likely wrong on that one...) Any more out there Shane? -

Too much to quote from above- an excellent post. HRP was a great 'in-theory' but not in practice idea. As was just pointed out, it wasn't a great idea to put it where it was; sadly. Somebody from their 'marketing planning' team REALLY did not do their homework very well, and did not think to address the failures in the past- "Those who do not learn from their mistakes are DOOMED to repeat them..."

My experience with ACE was mostly good- but I still let my membership lapse a few years back.... I joined through an unlikely connection of my Mother and one of the editors of ACE back in 1991- and I had a LOT of fun those first few years (I was out of HS and was able to drive to many of the events) and had some great times then; I was still relatively new to coasters at that point, and was getting my training wheels off. I know of how the innards there work, and I'm disappointed with some of the members' attitudes towards things. In all reality, it is good to be a diverse group of people who can then SHARE their expereinces in parks and on rides, but as a whole I'm MUCH happier with TPR as my 'source' for coaster fun- it's better to laugh AT yourself, then to shun those who laugh at your mistakes and your silliness... Heaven knows how big a fool I can make of myself- and here I feel I can do it without being an outcast!

Most memorable coaster moment of 2008?
QueerRudie replied to TheHulk's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Two: Standing in line (what it might have been a line for) the Canyon Blaster and hearing "Does this ride go Upside down" as the train roared through the twin loops next to the platform.... Seeing my friend's son Josh on his first trip on Whizzer- and watching his expressions of total joy wiht his father as we sped around the course, and thinking this might have been the single greatest single ride experience I've ever been on. (Not only that, it was my final ride that I needed to complete my Schwartzkopf Collection- making it that much more memorable to me!) -

Pipeline dream here.... I've always wanted to have a 'new'version of the 'FirstGen' freefall rides- and I could SO see this being a great addition to a park looking for a 'fun, new' additon- The current round of Intamin Freefalls, while thrilling, leave me not only bored, but also rather disappointed with the ending- anticlimatic, really. I could see, with technoloy improvements, a newer version of this ride- and I'd be first in line for it, no matter where it was.... I have very fond memories of Demon Drop at CP- it was my first, and only, FirstGen Freefall ride-I rode it three times in a row before breaking it (Yes, that was me screaming at the ride that day!) I wsih now I'd spent more time on it as opposed to "Disaster transport." -
Admittedly, as far as parks are concerned, this one was a major mistake in it's location to begin with- but I think that's been said enough over the past posts.... I always loved the concept of a total music park like this- while Opryland was 'music' - it was more 'country' rather than true varieties of music which made it what it was; HRP COULD work as a park- but not in Myrtle beach- a NOTORIOUSLY seasonal place- Look at the graveyard of things which tried to make it work there. HootersAir comes to mind immediatly! I am quite sad to see it go- as it was a very unique experience of all the parks out there. I hope that in the future, a park similar to, if not duplicating it, will be built with better success. The concepts of HRP were spot-on; the placement was completely off. [/img]
