The "GP" of Theme Parks Facebook Thread!
Tmcdllr replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I agree, that's just really dumb. "Sure Billy, you can do whatever you want now. You are not a dumb kid anymore, now you are just a stupid teenager!" -
Someone is very welcome to correct me if I'm seeing this wrong, but I was under the impression that the concrete slabs were simply done for ease of construction on woodies that are mostly on flat ground (as many GCIs are). One giant slab with steel connecting plates drilled into in a thousand different places is a lot easier to pour than a thousand individual small footers. Anyone care to confirm or refute? Is it also more stable this way?

One thing at a time. -
Totally unessesary story, there was no series of problems. The TWO incidents are seemingly unrelated. That one customer called the lap bar a "bracket"...oh brother. But I do agree, if I ever get stuck on it then they should bring me beer! Funny how they fail to mention this is a prototype and a new design and as such there will be some things that need to be worked out and that is completely normal. "Came to a grinding hault"........sheesh! This kind on nonsense just adds more fuel to the ill informed gp that makes this out to be much worse than it was.

TTD is an engineering marvel and I would go to this park just for that. -

This is where everyone is making their over-assumptions. Cp is trying to regain there coaster count, yes. But who said anything about MM? Cp is focusing on how to improve the park, not compete with a park that is a total opposite. Regain their coaster count... for themselves? -

I only see one coaster being added, not two....Kinzel never went so far as to add two coasters at CP just to satisfy his overinflated ego & since he's gone & Matt Q is in charge he's gonna follow a more cost effective plan especially since there are other parks in the chain that need new captial investments as well. This is seems like the most reasonable post here. Cp is trying to regain its coaster count by adding another one, that was the general message. Some people read to far into things and assume there will be two coasters. If there is to be second attraction, i doubt it will be a second coaster, maybe a nice thrill/flat at most. Possibly a new/redone games building to go with the new coaster. If they are trying to regain their coaster count (and surpass MM) they are going to have to add more than one with the rumored 2013 MM coaster. -
Then that means every single roller coaster is sketchy because wheels have fallen off, cars have separated, brakes have failed, axles and welds have broken, PEOPLE HAVE DIED, all at least once so if hydraulic launches are all sketchy because a cable broke once AND NOBODY DIED then so are all of the other roller coasters everywhere in the world because something has happened on them, at least once.

maybe this assumption of two coasters being built is from one of the FALSE CLUES. -
Quick fix? Cost effective? You do realize that you can't just plop a drive tire anywhere down on the track right? When a component like a drive tire, flat brake, magnetic brake, etc. is used, the track has to be designed for it. Meaning, it has to have special connections to attach the component to the track via a different track tie. You can't just plop a drive tire down anywhere you want, that's not how it works. Unless you are suggesting they start cutting up existing ties and re-welding a new track tie to connect a drive tire to, then I would say its not possible. But then you're talking about completely re-engineering something to prevent an incident that is 1 in a million from happening, and that costs $$$$$. It's not a quick or cost effective fix at all, and there would definitely have to be a software upgrade because you need the PLC to control it. Please let the professionals handle how to fix this, I guarantee they know what they're doing. And I completely agree with Double0Kevin on this one, there is never going to be a time when a launch is going to go too fast without the computer acknowledging it and shutting the system down. Do you people not think that the engineers didn't determine the safest and fastest speed in the reverse launch to prevent something like that from happening? I guarantee you that there is a speed limit on all the launches to prevent overspeeding and the system will completely shut down if it goes above that. So I will say this, I doubt that a valley in the loop will ever happen, unless there is another freak accident like this one. However, a valley in the loop is nowhere near as bad as getting stalled at the top. For one, the roof is easily accessible to get people off. The only bad part is having to remove the train from the track. But once again, I doubt this will ever happen because there is most likely restrictions in the program to prevent overspeeding, whereas there isn't restrictions on how slow a train can go. Makes sense. And if for some strange, freak reason it ever did valley in the loop and they had to remove the train, since there are only two cars it should not take long at all, at least not nearly as long as a 7 or 8 car train would.

The Rumor / Crazy Idea Superthread
Tmcdllr replied to Wes's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Very possible although I would imagine it would be far more expensive than a typical drop ride because for each seat/car you would have to have track, a catch car, a lift system, brakes, sensors, etc. But the idea of each car randomly dropping individually is very interesting. I think it could be engineered but I don't think anyone would want to do it simply because of the cost involved. -
That is routine maintenance before Superman opens. There is a track walk to the top of the turns apex before electricians even get there. Perhaps there was another issue at another ride (probably X2), and the mechanic didn't get to track walk Superman until the other problems at other rides were fixed. Explains its 2pm opening. Part of me is hoping Intamin for the new coaster, but part of me is hoping for Premier. Intamin is getting better with its technology, but after Cheetah Hunt, I am kind of hoping SFMM doesn't get a tame launch coaster. Rides by Premier including Mr. Freeze and Speed the ride, really make me feel like they could do a better job as far as ride experience. Plus I would love to have lapbars, but I imagine that won't happen. Also, with the way they're working magnets these days, there's really no reason to have a cable launch unless you're working in tight space, or are doing something like Top Thrill or Kingda Ka. Computer systems are so much more advanced, and the magnets do the job with less maintenance. True but magnetic launch systems cost more to operate than hydraulic launches, or so I've read on here before, especially on the scale of a TTD or KK ride. But I would like to see someone develop an economical - to - operate magnetic launch system that would cost about as much per launch on a very large scale ride as the hydraulic launch does. When that happens, I think the hydraulic launch will be put aside in favor of magnetic, and it would be safer too. These LIM and LSM systems and the magnetic braking still amazes me the way they can just hurl a train from a dead stop and stop it quickly and smoothly, I remember when none of this stuff existed, it's very interesting.
