Ron Toomer has Passed Away
Screamin_Eagle replied to Skycoastin Steve's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I remember first hearing about Ron Toomer from the "America's greatest Roller coaster thrills" video, and I even got some literature from Arrow Dynamics that had articles about him, he did so much for the coaster world, it truly is a major loss.. -
Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread
Screamin_Eagle replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Haven't been following what has been going on at Holiday World, I had just figured that the Timberliner trains would be in place by now. it's a true shame to hear it's turning into a rough ride, when I rode it 2 years ago, it was powerful but not bone jarring. -

Yeah, they were at Six Flags St. Louis today, they got there right about 8 am and the bus left at 330, think the next stop is Holiday World, and I think they are up in Six Flags Great America next week, with a stop in between -
Decided to join in the festivities with Club TPR on their stop to SFSTL today, and glad I did. The day started off well, Rob and the folks from TPR are a nice bunch of people, I felt very welcome, everyone was very friendly and I didn't feel left out of the excitement. thanks everyone on the trip! We got into the park around 830 and we were walked back to Mr. Freeze for a behind the scenes look.. we got to tour the station house plus we got to go down into the launch tunnel which was a thrilling kind of thing to do ( for us coaster nuts) didn't get to hear to much of what the engineer was saying but it was still interesting and cool to be in the tunnel not to mention it gave me an opportunity for a nice shot of Freeze that not everyone has a chance to get.. after leaving the launch tunnel We walked around the back of the building, got to hear some facts and stories ( if you were in ear shot) and then we moved to the track area for some more photo opportunities. after the tour, we were walked over to Evil Knievel for some ERT and with the smaller sized group, it made for some fantastic ride time! I got in about 9 rides on Evil Knievel with 2 of them being completely alone which is always a treat to any coaster enthusiast.. after the ERT on EK I headed back to get some time on Freeze, it was broken down when I got there, train was stuck in the launch tunnel, stopped on the way back in. after it got fixed I rode it 3 times, was nice not to have to leave the station to ride again, air was working in the station which was a great thing. after my few rides on the Freeze I headed back to the Boss and took a ride on that one, got over there and there was nobody in the station yet, but I knew I wouldn't be riding the car alone since they wont run it with out at least the first car filled up. finally more folks showed up and we were off. as usual the Boss didn't disappoint me in the least bit, always enjoy the ride.. after riding the Boss, I headed back to the Eagle for a ride or two on that one and dare I say it, the Eagle was riding very rough!! I was in the last car of the red train, and I don't think in all my years of riding the eagle have I ever had rougher rides. that train was jumping on the track like crazy, that coaster needs some TLC in a bad way. after my 2 rides on the Eagle I headed over to the Mine Train, then it was time for lunch. we had a nice lunch in the picnic grove, good food. after lunch was over I couldn't take any more of the heat and headed home. I had a great time with Rob and everyone from the TPR trip, and look forward to taking one of the trips with the group in the future. all of the folks at the park that helped out with the event did a great job and I thank them all.. Thanks Rob for making a stop at SFSTL the sign on the pavilion where lunch was served inside the Mr. Freeze station looking down towards the launch tunnel inside the launch tunnel of Mr. Freeze another shot of the launch tunnel of Freeze looking out from the tunnel at the track leading up shot of freeze how the train looked for 2 of my rides today, I took this shot from the last seat on the coaster. having the ride to yourself is a great experience! the empty station of the Boss

Going to parks alone?
Screamin_Eagle replied to alilstronger's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
every season I get a season pass to Six Flags St. Louis since its only about 35 minutes away, and with the exception of a couple of visits, I spend all of my time at the park alone. The advantage of going by yourself is that you can ride whatever you choose to ride and as often as you choose to ride. the only disadvantage is not being able to share in the good time your having with anyone, nothing better than having a good coaster moment, and having someone there to share it with. -

being a native from St. Louis, the City Museum is one the coolest things our city has to off visitors! the spiral slides are great for kids and adults alike! great TR, glad you had yourself a good time while visiting! -
the first geek out moment I had, was during Holiwood nights at Holiday world, we were all on a walkback tour of the Legend, and I stopped to get "perfect shot", I was poised with my camera, looking up at the hill, waiting for the train to come careening down, it was taking a minute or so for the train to appear, so I put my camera down, as I looked around, I laughed.. there we were, about 30 of us all standing still with cameras in hand all looking at the same hill waiting for the coaster to drop. thought...this is truly a coaster geek moment! however my biggest geek out moment came during a walkback tour of Wildfire in SDC, seeing the parts, and trains up close was like wow..and I geeked out big time.. knowing that the only folks that would see what I see in the photos I took were other coaster nuts... Photos of Shockwave and other defunct coasters

Thanks for that bit of history about Shockwave, I believe the the height of the lift of Shockwave was 170, with the actual drop being 155 ft. I remember the first time I went to SFGAM, and I drove down the entrance and saw that big giant blue coaster looming over the parking lot, just couldn't wait to ride it! -

Back in 1999 I think it was, The Orient Express derailed on the last stretch of track I believe it was. Nobody was killed, just some injuries occurred. Roller coaster derails at amusement park Topeka Capital-Journal, The, Jul 18, 1999 by CHERYL WITTENAUER Several people injured at Worlds of Fun, but none receive life- threatening injuries. The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Fire fighters rescued stranded riders from cars dangling from the Orient Express roller coaster at the Worlds of Fun amusement park Saturday night. Eighteen people had been riding a six-car train on the coaster when two cars derailed shortly before 10 p.m. Two people were taken immediately to North Kansas City Hospital, and a nursing supervisor said one was in good condition and one in fair condition. Six others were treated at the scene and taken later to hospitals. Related Results * Accident caused by beam fracture None of the injuries were life-threatening, said Brad Humston, spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department. Fire crews reached the scene about 10:30 p.m. and raised ladders to extricate stranded riders, Humston said. Two cars carrying four people dangled at a 90-degree angle about 20 to 30 feet above the ground, and crews used chains to secure the cars to the track before helping the riders down. By 11:30 p.m., just two riders remained to be rescued, park officials and Humston said. Debbie Ruth, 18, of Eudora, Kan., and a group of friends heard and saw the accident. "We were right underneath the ride when we heard a really loud noise, then we heard people screaming for help and we saw them hanging off the side," Ruth said. Humston couldn't immediately say how other riders had reached the ground. Rick Rau, the park's marketing director, disputed witnesses' reports that one person jumped and one was thrown from the car. Rau said the incident was the first he could remember involving the Orient Express since it was installed in 1980. The Orient Express takes riders on a two-minute, 30-second ride on a 3,470-foot track at speeds up to 50 mph. The track rises 117 feet and descends 115 feet on the first drop. -
Libertyland Demolition Begins
Screamin_Eagle replied to coasterdude5's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
it's just sad seeing a coaster in such disrepair, just the historical significance alone should have protected it. hopefully it will be saved and restored so future generations can enjoy this classic too! -
