The last year it was opened it was plagued with problems, including a derailment. they removed it and I believe they replaced it with Mamba... -

I would imagine that the park removed Shockwave to make room for a new coaster. Shockwave had run it's course, and was down towards the bottom of the list as far as popularity goes, and Im guessing that they felt they could scrap that one and replace it with a new and improved coaster. not to mention it was rough as can be. the whole track vibrated when the trains made their way around the course. -
Hey everyone, was sitting here at my desk waiting patiently for the next round of snow to arrive, and was organizing my photo albums. I came across some old photos I took of coasters over the year and the album also included shots of a few now defunct coasters...want to see them? as rough as Shockwave was, I really did enjoy this coaster.. Loved that first drop on Shockwave! another favorite from the past, the Orient Express! and of course there was that odd coaster "Flashback" and last but not least, the Zambezi Zinger, and here is one of the trains a shot of the ride and one on ride shot..

St. Louis Forest Park Highlands Comet coaster

I am shocked every time I see that picture, guess she was an original adrenaline junkie! -
back in the day, St. Louis had an amusement park called the Forest Park Highlands, it was a famous park for many years, it was sadly destroyed by a fire in July of 1963. The Highlands was home to the "Comet" roller coaster, which was at the time the largest coaster built. Comet Facts: height- 85 ft length- 3,120 ft opened May 15, 1941 and it was designed by Herbert Schmeck with trains from the PTC running on its course.. Ironically, the only thing that wasn't burned, was the Comet. The Comet was pulled down over three days in 1966, and until they tore it down, they had to place pieces of rubber over sections of the track to keep people from trying to take that one final ride.. you can see what the Highlands looked like in this video, it also includes a POV of the Comet! pre- TPR of course ALL PHOTOS BELOW ARE OWNED BY DOUG GARNER AND CAN BE FOUND ON HIS WEBSITE WHICH IS DEDICATED TO:forestparkhighlands.com as seen from Oakland Ave. coming down the first drop

Coasters at Night
Screamin_Eagle replied to Erik Johnson's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Screamin Eagle of course! its an insane ride at night, no lights, careening through the woods. the Voyage is an incredible night ride, all that airtime at night is incredible.. -
I am 45, the first actual coaster I ever rode was the River King Mine train at Six Flags over mid America (SFSTL). I was 8 years old, it was the removed "B" side, and I remember it scared the heck out of me. after that the next coaster I rode was 4 years later when the Screamin Eagle opened at the park. Loved that coaster so much, it still to this day is my all time top favorite wooden coaster, and I usually ride it 40-60 times a season!
