Canobie Coaster replied to crispy's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'll be in the Pigeon Forge area for a week in June and am hoping to at least get one ride on Lightning Rod. If I hear the ride is running, you can bet I'm going to make a beeline over there to try and get on it. If it's down like it was last year for my visit, it'll be a major bummer for my visit since it was a key reason why I wanted to return, but at least the park does have other good rides. I'm just going in with the mindset that I need it to run for just 2 hours in a 1 week period. I was able to do both the Goat Coaster and Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster last year. Both of those ones had double seats. I don't recall getting discounts for those two specifically, but the best way to get discounts down there is to find brochures at travel centers/hotels. There are two new mountain coasters RCDB says are opening this year in addition to the four you are talking about. Rowdy Bear and Anakeesta. Last I checked, Rowdy Bear looked like it may be open sometime soon but Anakeesta seems further out. -
Six Flags New England (Opening Day) Here is the first of a few Six Flags New England trip reports. Despite having a certain park mentioned in my screen name just 25 minutes from me, Six Flags is my most visited park since they actually offer season passes. Not only that, but the Six Flags season pass is still the best deal in the industry. I can't believe that one low price gets me into all of the parks with free parking. I am really a big fan of the park's 2017 additions. There's the Joker free fly coaster, which I finally got to ride after several failed attempts on the New Jersey one, which is getting more publicity now. But honestly the addition I am most excited for is Holiday in the Park. Halloween has typically been a bitter sweet holiday for me since I get to enjoy Lake Compounce's amazing haunt, but it also means the end of coasters for a few months in New England unless you want to board a train of kids at either Fun World or Santa's Village. Holiday in the Park will actually offer some adult coasters to give me a winter coaster fix that doesn't require a plane ride or a 5-6 hour drive to New Jersey. Opening Day got off to a pretty rocky start. Wicked Cyclone nor Superman were ready at park opening. I decided to go to Wicked Cyclone first which ended up opening a half hour late. It's a pet peeve of mine that the park never has these rides ready to go at opening, but once I boarded I quickly forgave them since Wicked Cyclone now has choice seating! I was able to pick the back and Wicked Cyclone was flying and giving plenty of ejector air despite the 40 degree weather. I was only able to get two rides since Wicked Cyclone had 1 train operations, which caused the line to reach about an hour when I checked back later. Superman was less than 15 minutes for most seats all day. I did wait about 45-50 minutes for the front about halfway through the day, but I have to get that seat at least once per visit since it's significantly better than any other. I would like to commend the park on the operations since Superman was often sending out the next train before the previous one returned to the brake run. That's something I barely have seen over the past few years. Superman still has one of my favorite layouts and I'm so glad there is no more VR. Speaking of VR, Mind Eraser had a lot of issues with the VR due to the cold. However, the new restraints are a significant improvement and the coaster is now rideable. It's still jerky but at least you aren't bashing your head against a restraint. I'd say it's a 6/10 ride now compared to the 2/10 ride it was previously. Batman also had some improvements. The first was the addition of a single-rider line. While Batman doesn't tend to get a long line any more, this is a welcome addition in the event the line backs up on a busy day. The ride also got freshly painted trains. The black OSTRs don't stand out like the old, yellow ones, but they received a much needed paint job. Batman's zero-G roll is still one of the best ones out there. It really sustains the hang-time longer than most other coasters. Batman and its sexy new restraints. I want the Giant Yoshi! Mind Eraser's train modification is more welcome than Goliath's. I got a really bad Charlie horse on the backwards portion. Joker is coming along nicely. This ride was just as open as Wicked Cyclone and Superman were at park opening. These restraints turn a total abomination into a rideable coaster. It went from a 2/10 ride to a 6/10 ride. Thank you for not being on Superman! Though VR didn't want to work in the cold conditions. I'm ready to have a Six Flags day. Whoosh! Wicked Cyclone may be my preferred coaster, but Superman has the best night rides in the park. The Man of Steel still has one of the best layouts around. Thunderbolt is still running quite well despite its age and of course that neon sign is hard to beat. Oh how I missed Wicked Cyclone over the winter. Such a relentless coaster. With the naked trees early in the season, I was able to get some shots I can't get in the summer months. So many Yoshis!

2017 is shaping up to be a really good year for me park wise. As usual, I plan to hit several of the parks in the Northeast but I will also be hitting some new parks such as Holiday World and Six Flags Great America. Back in March I was driving to the local supermarket. I passed a few gas stations, some car washes, a movie theater, a roller coaster, a gentleman's club... wait did I see that right? I pulled into the gentleman's club parking lot and did a double take. Yes there was actually a roller coaster in a parking lot in mid-March, and a full-sized Galaxi/Zyklon style coaster too (not just a kiddie coaster). Then I remembered Revere always has their spring carnival ridiculously early in the year. I did some research on the Fiesta Shows (midway provider) website and saw they recently acquired an Interpark coaster named the Super Cyclone and made plans to return on the next clear day, which was 2-3 days later if I recall correctly. The weather was rough for this carnival per usual. Fiesta provides most midways up this way and as far as I can tell, this was the first carnival where Super Cyclone was set up. When I got there, the coaster was down. Great just my luck. It was a cold and windy day, so I wasn't sure if that would keep it down all day. Thankfully they got my first credit of 2017 up and running within an hour. The first test run was something you'd only see at a carnival. One employee was standing on the track near the brake run when the train was dispatched for a test run. After the train cleared the lift, the employee on the brake run shimmied down a support and walked through the structure to the station. Only at a carnival would you see something like that My friend and I were the first two to board. I had been on two other Interpark coasters at carnivals (one in California and one at the Big E). The restraints on this one were a bit overkill. There was the standard lapbar but then shoulder straps like Tempesto or Coney Island's Thunderbolt. It was probably the conditions, but the Super Cyclone was really crawling through the course. While the other two Interpark coasters I rode had small pops of air on the first drop, this one had nothing. The ride was a pretty boring coaster, but it was smooth and a credit I wasn't expecting. 3 out of 10 The rest of the midway consisted of your typical carnival rides. They had a KMG Freak Out, a swinging ship, some spinning rides, a Larson Fireball, and the crown jewel of the fair, the Zipper. I took rides on the Freak Out and Zipper and felt a little queasy afterwards which is something these rides hadn't done to me in the past. However, the cycles on these rides were really long and intense like any good fair. I'm glad Fiesta added a full-sized coaster again after the problems they had with the Fabbri spinner a while back since a large coaster was the only thing missing in their repertoire. Hopefully the Super Cyclone speeds up and rides like the other Interparks in the summer.[/fbvideonew] What a beautiful setting for a carnival. I thought this was a mirage when I drove past it. Nope, an actual full-sized coaster in March in New England!

Lake Compounce Discussion Thread
Canobie Coaster replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^ I ran into the same problem on Sunday. I was really bummed out. Too bad you weren't down there the same time as me. I saw in the Kennywood forum that the park bumped up several height requirements in response to the Rollo Coaster accident, did Lake Compounce do the same too on a few rides? I was shocked to see the Zoomers car ride with a 42" height requirement and the flume have a 42" height requirement as well. I know for a fact I rode the flume as a young kid when I wasn't 42" yet. -

Same I'm planning on stopping in for the first time this weekend. I either could try hitting the park Saturday or Sunday. I figured the latter would be the better of the two options. -
I walked by Flashback around 7:40 when it was stuck and by 8 the train was already down. It seems like they fixed it quickly this time. Wow... well enjoy your ride on Joker because it's all downhill from there. There's a chance he loves X2. Or he could hate it. There's really no in between on that ride.
-
I much prefer this over the Intamin Zac Spins purely because of comfort. The vests on Joker hold you comfortably in place during the flipping while Zac Spins destroy your thighs and nuts. I should also note that I got the best rides tonight that I have ever gotten on Superman (have been riding it since 07). The train was absolutely hauling and every hill had strong ejector air. If it rides like that into the summer, Wicked Cyclone may be dethroned as my favorite ride there.

I just added SFNE Joker photos to the park discussion thread from today's season pass preview. -
After having Great Adventure's Joker closed for me on all my trips to the park last year, I finally got to try one of these free fly coasters during SFNE's Joker preview today. The line was about 15ish minutes and they were dispatching trains really fast which is a great sign for a new ride. How is the ride? Unlike X2 where the flipping is jerky, Joker is glass smooth. I probably got 3-4 flips per ride on the green side and 1-2 flips per ride on the purple side, which seems consistent with everyone else's reviews too. However, I was able to start getting more flips when the rider next to me and I started rocking the car like I do on my local carnival's Zipper. Even when the train didn't flip, the rocking was really disorienting without getting nauseating. The ride is short, but it's action packed from start to finish. I preferred boarding the train facing forwards since you could travel the upper section in reverse. Overall, Joker is my third favorite coaster in the park and a very welcome addition. After the Batman clones, this is probably my favorite clone out there because of the uniqueness and intensity. 9 out of 10 I should also note there's a single rider line too. However, the line isn't set up in the best way and is primed to be abused. An attendant would send a group from the regular line to either the green or purple side. Then the attendant would let all of the single riders join the queue with everyone else. This let the single riders stay together and circumvent the line. I'm hoping the park can figure out a way to keep the single rider line and prevent it from being abused since this coaster would really benefit from filling empty seats with the seating configuration. I also got two rides on Superman that absolutely blew me away. I have been riding the coaster for 10 years and have never gotten rides that fast and intense. Usually the third and fourth hills have sustained ejector air and the other hills have pops of ejector air. Well today Superman decided to give major ejector air on every hill. Honestly it was running so fast that the curved S-hill leading into the spaghetti bowl section almost had some air which has never happened for me. If Superman keeps running like this all summer, I would take it over Wicked Cyclone (just barely though). I'm a big fan of wing seating. I really like the ride's paint job and how it looms over the midway. Finally get to try one of these free fly coasters! The ride was glass smooth and I probably got 3-4 flips per ride. Great addition to the park's lineup.

I think their sister park (Lake Compounce) bumped up some of their height requirements too. I noticed their flume now has a minimum height requirement of 42". I used to be able to ride it as a kid when I was shorter than that. -
^ Storm Chaser & Lighning Run were both running as you described during my visit last year. The best thing about RMC is that Storm Chaser is the worst of the ones I've been on and it's easily a 10/10 ride. On Lightning Run, were the slow dispatches still due to people having trouble fitting with those restraints?

For anyone interested, I'm at the park now and everything is a walk-on. The double up that replaced the triple up is much smoother. The ride is running pretty well, not as fast as summer but still amazing. -

^^ I wonder how many people will ride the kiddie frisbee on the other side of the park now. I still can't believe the old one doesn't even swing past 45 degrees.
