Segway Lawsuit With Disney Update
jackskellington101 replied to mcjaco's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^ As long as the Segway is not FDA approved as a medical device and if it is not considered an ADA compliant device, even in the court system, there's very little the consumer can do. Because of the legal issues between Dean Kamen and Johnson & Johnson about using the same technologies, technologies that Johnson & Johnson own in the medical field, in the Segway as his joint venture project the iBOT wheelchair, I doubt it FDA approval for a medical device will come soon. That won't happen simply because the moment it does, Johnson & Johnson will hunt down and sue liberally. Disney does as is necessary by the law. I, again, see the Segway as a great alternative because, in the right hands, it's more maneuverable than an ECV or wheelchair and takes up a smaller footprint. It also can allow people outside the Segway to stop the person on the Segway with very little to no force. But, Disney doesn't want the added liability, understandably so, and are doing what is needed by the law.. -
Segway Lawsuit With Disney Update

I still think with the right parameters, the Segway is a good device to use in the park, but the judge did the right thing here. -
Right now, my family is throwing around an idea for a Cedar Point trip for me sometime in May, in the period between finals but before commencement, right around the beginning of the season. I've got a couple questions that my family has posed for me that I don't exactly know the answers to. 1. How is Castaway Bay? Is it worth it for people who are not water park super fans, but not adverse to them either? If so, how much time, estimated, would be necessary? 2. For a two day stay, roughly, are the packages really worth it? We generally never go the package route for these trips anyway, but it's being thought about this time around.

Oy, that's most creepy. I can't imagine the sensation of seeing someone you know get busted in that situation and, frankly, I don't even want to begin to imagine. -
^^ Not only the design aspect, but the manufacturing and installation aspects as well. It's creating an economy of scale for an attraction. The more you build it, the less expensive each individual one becomes, theoretically. There is a place. My hope would be that, even if they clone the ride, it'd have a different name. However, I can see how that would not be helpful in brand creation, but a boy can dream.

Agree completely. He totally shirked the question, which gave me some bad vibes on the future in that department. I can see, economically, how cloning a ride all over the place is less expensive overall and how multiple rides of the same time would work on the regional basis of which Six Flags is set. However, his answer was very slippery and he went right back to that Tilt a Whirl thing. That was the only part of the interview where I had the feeling of some bad juju. I think he got the age demos flipped for Dark Knight and Evel Knievel, where Evel Knievel is the 8-18 and Dark Knight is the 8-12. But even that seemed weird. Those demos don't seem right to me, they're skewing way young and are too inclusive. That, to me, showed a little bit of the TV marketing side of him showing through.

Nah, that's fine. In fact, I encourage that! On that point, I added this thread to Digg.com as well. The direct link to the story is here. Hopefully, it won't kill the board like the last time a TPR thread was posted to Digg. No I never wanted that. I wanted it closed and turned into a world class pavement megaplex!! I still think pavement is better than 10 of their coasters. Which 10?

Great interview! When he started talking about future in terms of increased upkeep, I got the warm and fuzzies for a moment. It seems a little rare now a days to find people who actually take that into consideration, so he's got the right head on his shoulders in that aspect. But he sure did shirk Wes' question on park individuality. Unless I interpreted it wrong, the answer was "Which do you want, Dark Knight or the Tilt a Whirl?" which wasn't exactly the question. Ah well. Again, great interview. Vive la Tilt a Whirl!

Ask Mark Shapiro a Question!

What do you see as the brand differentiation between the Six Flags parks and your competitors, namely Cedar Fair? How do the projects coming up in the future continue that message? What affect does negative stigmas, and the negative publicity around it, have on an individual park? What do you think is the best way of turning that negative perception around? How important, in your view, is park individuality? -

That actually might not be a bad investment. At least it's an established brand. -
The Rumor / Crazy Idea Superthread
jackskellington101 replied to Wes's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Looks like Jim Hill is starting up the Walt Disney World 5th Gate rumors again. In my opinion, I'm leaning towards what Lance has to say on Screamscape. I can't see this being a separate park as much as it may be the beginnings of an after hours tour program in the existing parks after the parks close to the general public. I think building this program from scratch when the materials are already there is kind of silly. What do ya'll think? -
It's supposed to be a continuation for the Imagination Institute theme carried over from Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. The three portraits are supposed to be the three former winners of the "Inventor of the Year" award, which is presented to Wayne Szalinski over at Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. Apparently, the other winner besides Wayne Szalinski is Philip Brainard (Robin Williams character in Flubber) for his creation of Flubber, or only as I can assume. Also in the queue line, there's Brainard's office, which has a bunch of dancing Flubbers running around and some other props from Flubber, like Brainard's robotic companion Weebo. There's also references to Disney's other family science-fiction type movies, like a door for Dean Higgins in the queue and a "No Tennis shoes" sign with a pair of tennis shoes by the computer room in the ride (both for The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, among other films starring a young Kurt Russell).
