Bump, because I actually have enough money and I will actually do this next year. I have a few new questions: 1: What would be the best time of year to do this trip? (Crowds and operating schedules are the main factors I have in mind, but if there are others than certainly tell me about them.) 2: How far in advance should I book hotels in order to get the best prices? I've been getting a lot of conflicting information. (I've settled on using hotwire as my go-to site.) 3: Speaking of Hotwire, would it be wise or unwise to add their Cancellation Protection to the hotel bookings?

^I went on the one at Kennywood a few years ago; it was incredibly loud, but WOW it was far more intense than what I was expecting. I highly recommend riding them when you come across them.

Dinner is only served from 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM. I'd only recommend to eat there at dinner time, Sunday through Thursday evening, (Friday and Saturday are still good, but markedly worse in quality because 2/3 of the college is too drunk to remember what it tastes like; also the antipasto bar and premier entree are not offered then; more on that in a sec) between the third week of August and the second week of May. I think it is actually open during the summer as summer courses are still held here, but I can guarantee it will be similar in quality to the weekend menu. Yes, this is the main dining hall on campus. Normally you might not bat an eye at it, but I eat there almost every day as I attend the university. It's an insane $12 million facility that opened up about 2.5 years ago. It's $14.50 to get in (you don't need a UB ID card to eat there.) Sunday through Thursday you are offered a Premier Entree where you can pay another $14.50 for a different even higher quality entree. It's in the back of the "Ellicott complex," the giant dorm that looks like a lego set; try to park in the Red Jacket parking lot if you can, but beware that the roads on campus are really confusing for newcomers. The stations they have are: -Oregano's: Pasta dishes; serves real Indian food every Wednesday which isn't mentioned online for some reason. -Strictly Vegetarian: Self-explanatory; includes a 2-dozen item salad bar with up to a dozen homemade dressings. -Foundations: Typical crappy college food. I usually don't bother. -Global Noodle: Make your own soups. -Blue Dragon: Asian/Chinese. -Baked Creations: Legit NY-style Pizza as well as calzone-like baked items and a bread dipping station. -Carve: Usually has various types of meats and hot dishes. -Premier Entree (Sunday through Thursday only): You pay another $14.50 for a higher quality dish that you can only order once. Don't bother with Thursday's prime rib though, because they pre-cook it and it's overcooked like crazy. (The other steak dishes can be cooked to your liking though.) -Antipasto Bar (Sunday through Thursday only): Self explanatory. -Temptations: Various desserts -Various drinks: Sodas, milk and soy milk, coffees/teas. -There's a cereal station used all day (there's a General Mills plant in the area.) All menu offerings are changed pretty much every day, so check the menu for the specific day you go, and though they "plan" the menu months in advance, don't bother counting on the accuracy until the week you go. Assuming you are making a round trip to and from Mount Airy, NC, then I'd probably recommend this: Day 1: Drive to Camden Park in the morning, spend the afternoon at the park as a rest stop, drive to a hotel in Columbus, OH Day 2: Cedar Point Day 3: Kings Island Day 4: Kentucky Kingdom Day 5: Holiday World Day 6: Drive to Beech Bend in the morning, spend a couple hours there as a rest stop, then drive back to Mount Airy. This is if your parents are able to drive that much in that amount of time. Also if you don't want to worry about lines at KI or CP you may want to either get fast lane passes or go a second day to one or both, given how big they are.

RCDB has both Google and Bing Maps locations for most, if not all of the entries. For the sake of trip planning, if you have an ungodly high amount of patience and determination like me, you can download Google Earth and manually put in all the locations.

I see no one has yet pointed it out; in the first picture, right next to the "wing coaster lift base" track segment, there are one or two track pieces that are Celadon-colored. (If they're the same coaster, I really like that color combo.)

^^^Obviously, but I meant crude compared to access to the CAD files as well as sophistication of the method. My method is probably one of the more accurate methods you can do by hand. It just depends on how much time you want to devote to it.

The way that the speed of a coaster would vary throughout the track that it traverses is incredibly complex. In order to figure out the real average speeds, we would need to be a client of or on the payroll of the companies that design that specific ride, because while the principles of calculating the average speed are pretty simple (integral calculus; integrating the train's speed with respect to time and dividing it by the time elapsed that it takes to traverse the whole track) the actual equations themselves would likely be too difficult to do by hand. Average speed is extremely variable even on the same ride, because if the train is stacked for a minute, then that 0 mph speed over 60 seconds must therefore be included in the average to be accurate, thus bringing the average way down. It means less for the actual ride's experience, so combined with the difficulty of how to measure it, it appears to be much less marketable and thus less common knowledge because it isn't worth the computational expense to calculate it. (At least as far as my intuition can tell; though I have yet to be employed by a ride design company, I do have 80% of my Mechanical Engineering degree under my belt.) However, with a stopwatch program, Google Earth and Youtube, you can nonetheless come up with some VERY crude approximations of the average speeds of the coaster. Open up a video of any coaster who has recent and very clear Google Earth satellite imagery, and use a stopwatch to measure the time that it takes for the camera (thus the train) to traverse certain sections of track that are visible on Google Earth. Use Google Earth's Measure --> Path tool to determine the distance that the train traveled in the video for that amount of time that you decided, then divide that amount of track traveled by the time elapsed in that specific portion of the Youtube video, then you have the average speed for the train over that stretch of track. Then keep doing this for the rest of the ride, then at the end calculate the average of all of the speeds you recorded. (I'd say that the easiest way to determine landmarks in the Youtube video on where to pause that are also easy to find on Google Earth would be at every support frame for coasters like B&M's and stuff that tend to use simple tubular connections instead of a complex frame like on a wooden coaster, which normal human reflexes would not be able to get an accurate reading otherwise.)

I rarely get sodas or anything and I also have a moisture retention problem, so I usually just drink water and lots of it. How many of the parks have drinking fountains (like next to the bathrooms or something)? I remember during the TPR 2012 New Hotness trip that BGW didn't really have any. Combined with the 135 degree (post heat index) weather and the fact that I couldn't find my wallet for half the day, that was NOT fun. So if most of the parks have fountains, then that will save me a lot of money that way. (I either haven't gone to any of these parks or haven't gone to them in a long time so I don't remember.)

In terms of the Six Flags parks, even though I'm going to SFGAM first, SFFT's gold season pass is the cheapest of all the parks I'd be visiting. I never bought a season pass from any park before, so can I theoretically order an SFFT gold pass and pick it up at SFGAM first, or do I have to pick it up at the park I bought it from? (Thus meaning that I'd have to get the extra money for SFGAM's pass.) Or can I get the pass mailed to me thus not having to worry about any of this in the first place?

The thing is, I actually like doing the planning. I'm looking at the park websites to plan even what I want to eat at each park to get as accurate of food pricing as possible. (Unfortunately, a lot of the parks don't put the prices online, though.) Besides, it'll save time at the park if I choose now, because I'm infamous for taking forever to choose what to eat as I thoroughly comb through the menu to find the most unique item possible. EDIT: You know what, I'll probably reply to this thread again after I look through the menus of the parks that don't have the prices listed and ask if anyone knows where to obtain those prices. If no one on TPR will be able to come up with those numbers, then I bet I could get an answer from the parks themselves if I email them directly.

Here's my math: Assuming you're referring to the short trip, where Day 5 is SDC: Distance from Holiday Inn West St. Louis Six Flags to Silver Dollar City: 227 miles (Source: Google Earth) Distance from Silver Dollar City to Happy Days Hotel McAlester, OK: 266 miles (Source: Google Earth) Fuel Economy: 20 MPG Fuel Cost: $1.75/Gal -- $3.50/Gal actual price split between two people. (I chose $3.50 because that's the highest price I saw for an extended period of time around my home in central NY, which is typically one of the more expensive fuel regions in the US; it did go to $4.50 for a while, but it seems to be a bit more stable around $3.50) [(227 mi + 266 mi)/(20 mi/gal)] * ($1.75/Gal) = (24.65 Gal)*($1.75/Gal) = $43.14 (rounded up to nearest penny) My dad's Toyota Sienna that I usually drive has a range of 400 miles, so including one gas stop that would be three times I'd start up the car barring additional bathroom and stretching breaks. $43.14 + 3*($0.10) = $43.44. So according to the gas price I chose, my error is ($43.14-$43.44)/($43.44) = 0.691%. In reality, my error will be a lot more if I do not factor in the current state average of gas that I believe you mentioned (which I will probably update monthly) but I won't know that true value until a few weeks before I start the trip anyway.

To celebrate my planned graduating college with a Mechanical Engineering degree in a year, (take a wild guess what I want to do when I get out) I want to do an independent tour when I get out. I've wanted to do my own Texas/Midwest tour for a while, so that's what I'm settling on. If I get an engineering internship this summer, then it should be pretty easy to pay for. If I get a retail job around home then I could still pay for it but it will be more difficult. Either way, I want to know what can be done to make the trip cheaper. My methods are as follows: -Assume gas cost of $3.50/gallon in order to allow for enough wiggle room; split gas price with one other person. -Find hotels with Google Hotel Finder, filter for the cheapest 3 star (user rated) hotel nearby with free breakfast (to save on food costs); hotels without user ratings get ignored because I want to know that it's clean. Split hotel costs with one other person. I use AAA discounts whenever I can as I am a member. -I made a short trip and a long trip based on costs and time, and both were listed with and without front line passes for the parks that have them. -Assume $30/day for food. -Assume no money spent on souvenirs; I rarely get that sort of thing and usually only do for a particularly nice shirt, or maybe a shot glass or something now that I'm over 21. -The trip start day is only "partially fixed"; any time in the summer would be chosen, but it will coincide with the operating schedules of some of the parks that have shorter hours on the days that they are open longer. A good sized alpine slide opened barely an hour away from me almost four years ago and I never heard of it? Well, that's a pleasant surprise. I might just make a TR when I finish this semester.

In case you don't know that it exists, Google Hotel Finder is incredibly useful for this purpose. Their search filters make it even better. From my experience though, Baymont Inn and Suites Celebration fit the bill; pretty cheap, clean, free continental breakfast. The only problem I noticed was that the facility needed new paint in some spots, but if you can live with that then all is fine.

Thank you for the helpful insight, that about clears up all of my concerns. Regardless of their single rider policies, I am very much looking forward to visiting Lagoon for the first time. Based on what I've read both on and off TPR, it seems like the park has escaped my to-do list for far too long, even without the insanely awesome looking coaster they're putting together. Though that is a valid reason, I suspect it is also to increase capacity, because we all know that the front and back seats almost always have the longest lines.

Probably, not to mention construction costs. This is pure speculation but... As far as BEYOND vertical drops With tall coasters come a ton of supports, with a ton of supports you have increasing costs. B&M and Intamin use thick spines and arch designs that anchor to the ground rather than the supports. This greatly reduces the amount of supports you need. Arches are strong structures... But if it inverts on itself and goes beyond vertical it will need a lot more support because on it's own it's not as stable, and the extra costs probably don't justify it. It may have to do with forces... I'm no expert, but I would think it's more due to the costs of supporting it. As far as vertical drops, if someone wanted to do it they clearly could... Actually, track is a lot more expensive than supports, because supports are primarily stock pieces with a couple of welds here and there, whereas track is way more expensive because each one has to be custom bent in three dimensions and has TONS of welds all over the place, especially stuff like Intamin's triangular or box track. The reason giga coasters haven't gone past vertical is not the size of the coaster, but the size of the trains. Gravity acts upon the train at the, well, center of gravity of the train; since trains have a relatively constant cross section, that is essentially the center of the center car. That means that going over a hill, the front and rear of the train will go the speed of the center car. When we are dealing with 1 - 3 car trains, this is not much of an issue, because the front and back are pretty close to the center. But when we get to something like 8 car trains, then the effect becomes very pronounced. The equation of radial acceleration around a flat turn (so we can neglect gravity and its constantly changing angle) is (v^2)/r, where v = the velocity of the train and r = the radius of the track. That means that if you double the velocity of a train, you will have to quadruple the radius of the track to keep the same G's. Since the track would be designed for the center of gravity of the train, the center of the train would end up having 0 G's, while the back of the train would end up having -1.2 G's (just throwing some random numbers out there; these can change to pretty much whatever you want depending on how carefully the hill is designed) because of the fact that the rear cars are going the speed of the center car, which is currently much farther down the drop, where the track radius is larger to keep the same airtime while accounting for the increased speed, and the rear of the car is going at that much faster speed but at a point in the track where its radius is designed for 0 G's at a much slower speed. Once you get beyond vertical, if you want to make straight track or track with a negative radius (cresting a hill; not a positive radius in a pullout) the G's throughout the whole train will always be less than zero even if it's not moving. Adding that component of gravity to the radial acceleration of the rear of a long train which navigates a very tight turn will typically lead to airtime that exceeds safe limits. If you wanted to design a coaster with a big, 200+ foot past vertical drop, it can very easily be done with a short train, but the kinds of parks that can afford a hyper or giga coaster will usually want a longer train in order to have a higher capacity to compensate for the long lines that will occur with such a headline attraction. Hopefully I didn't lose anyone. There's a reason why engineers are known for being hard to understand when talking technical, as there are SO MANY concepts to try and convey in such a short discussion, we have to leave out a lot of details in order to keep the conversation from lasting literally hours or days, and it's incredibly difficult balance to pull off.

1. Do you have your videos set to auto-play on your: a. desktop computer and/or b. mobile device? (or if you don't know, just tell us if the videos auto-play or not in your newsfeed.) Nope. 2. Do you regularly "share" content from Facebook "page" (like the TPR page) to your own personal Facebook page? And have you shared something from the TPR page? Almost never. It would take a press release of a spectacular innovative new ride to make me do that. 3. What kind of content are you most likely to share? (Videos, Photos, News Stories, etc?) Probably videos. 4. How long on average do you watch a video posted to Facebook for? Do you watch the entire video? First 30 seconds? Until you get bored? I watch the whole thing. I have lots of patience and a big attention span. 5. How important are "video thumbnails" to you? (the image you see with the > Play icon before you click to watch a video) Personally, they are unimportant. I know the industry enough to know what you are referring to with mere text. That being said, for the majority of the GP who knows much less than we do, I suspect it would be wise to further clue them in on what it's about. 6. What do you like/dislike about Facebook? What features do you use the most and which ones annoy you? I watch your videos the most by far. But I'm also subscribed to your Youtube channel, so I'll see from whatever source. 7. Is there anything that TPR does or doesn't do on Facebook that you think we should be doing more/less of? I can't think of anything. By the way, WHO IS NINA KLEPPE?

For most enthusiasts, "scary" is rarely a relevant term; that is typically associated with a fear of one's safety, and since most of us know how disgustingly safe amusement rides are if you follow instructions, few rides are scary. In terms of intensity, they are moderately so. But the maneuvers are quite unique, so it is definitely a very fun experience. I have been on a couple, and they are definitely great.

Nice one, Doug. Good color combo (did you pick that as well?) the name's not cliche, and it appears that you might have used some of Larson's schematics in the details of the logo (where anything that delves into the engineering always gets bonus points from me) and I'm actually cool with the tagline.... because you really can't control the roll, as there is only pitch rotation.
