Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
FeelTheFORCE replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I know I said I was done, but this is way too good to pass up, and I'm so happy you said this. This is the EXACT mindset I deal with every single day in the EH&S field. The regulations and standards exist for YOUR safety to keep YOU safe in the event of an emergency. I'd like to see how much you're rolling your eyes when there's an electrical fire in the station, but you're unable to be reached because you're surrounded by Intamin track and supports. And I must ask, if you "despise Cedar Point" so much, why are you watching this thread like a hawk and continually replying to everything? Wouldn't it make sense and be ideal to avoid the things you hate? Real, you said it best again. I'm not the most perfect person in the world, nor do I claim to be, but some people just can't take criticism and flat out be wrong. I always laugh when the mockery comes out! Okay, that was the only bait I'm taking, back to being "done." -

There aren't any access roads under current wild mouse coasters because you can pull up right next to the station! How are you going to do that with Dragster's track and supports completely surrounding it? There are standards and regulations for things like that, you can't just say, "well that looks good enough" and be on your merry way. According to OSHA, fire lanes are REQUIRED to be a minimum of 20 feet wide and AT LEAST 10 feet away from any structure. They must have enough room to extend the outriggers necessary to support the aerial ladder or elevating platform while in operation. Real's right, I'm going to move on after this post. This discussion is pointless and ridiculous. I could see them somehow weave a new coaster through Dragster's track similar to Phantom's Revenge and Thunderbolt, but an entire coaster built in it's infield? There has been more than enough information presented (the OSHA reg is more than enough in itself) supporting the other side. -

I was there less than 2 months ago and have seen the area a million other times, I know what it looks like. This isn't RCT where coasters are just a footprint of the track and supports. Where are you going to put in an access road for maintenance and/or emergency vehicles? What if a fire truck needs to get in there? What about a crane to remove/put on the trains in the fall/spring...or to possibly lift in new parts? Not to mention, what if TTD's cable breaks? A ride there (let alone all the people in that area as well) would potentially be prone to being hit by shrapnel from it...hence why Kingda Ka's queue is nowhere near that area (let alone another ride) and had to be moved from it's original location. -

Real said it best, where is there room to build anything there? It's hardly a "giant open field" at all. You have the queue (which fills on busy days) and transfer track, then an access road for utility vehicles, then the building for the hydraulic motor, then a small section of grass which has spotlights for the tower. After all that you're running into the supports for the tower. On one side you have Iron Dragon and the water around Millennium Island, and on the other you have a very skinny midway with Corkscrew, Power Tower, Perimeter Road, and the Breakers parking lot (which fills during peak time). It's amazing they were able to squeeze TTD in where it is, let alone another coaster also. Keep in mind that coasters are a lot more than just track and footers...electrical, water, hydraulic fluids (possibly) all need running, not to mention lift/launch motors, queues/exits, transfer track, handicap ramps, etc. Cedar Point has shown great creativity in the past, but this might be pushing it. -

I disagree. SFMM wouldn't be advertising "18 coasters, the most on the planet!" so heavily if they were truly over. It's definitely not as prominent as before (and may have even taken a short hiatus), but the "coaster wars" are definitely still there, albeit in a somewhat smaller light. How many Arrow coasters have recently been removed due to rising maintenance costs? Yet Corkscrew, Iron Dragon, Gemini, CCMR, and Magnum all still stand. Wouldn't it seem economical to remove at least one or two for better replacements? But that would decrease coaster count and take a few years to recover. I'm sure Wildcat and DT aren't getting any cheaper to maintain either (and let's not even get started on Mean Streak's maintenance costs). Now, I know the sole reason they still stand isn't because of the diminished coaster count, but you can't say that doesn't factor in. I'd bet money that it does. -

I remember Kennywood was thinking of adding a SLC a few years back. Sure glad that got scrapped. -
I was thinking too that perhaps his family had to always take care of him, so subconsciously they were relieved to not have to constantly wait on him hand and foot anymore and deal with that burden, although they'd never admit it. Also, for all we know he could have been suffering from a severe case of PTSD, and his family is relieved that he is at peace now. Who knows, there are many possibilities.

They have Gemini, no need for another racing coaster. Not to mention I don't think a 100 foot GCI would do that much for the GP to be honest, considering everything else they have. Sure Maverick was a hit at only 105 feet, but there is only so much you can do with a wooden coaster before it starts to get redundant...they already have Gemini (which the GP perceives as 'wooden'), Mean Streak, and Blue Streak. If CP were to go the wood route, I could see them either giving Mean Streak the RM treatment, or doing what Robb said and building another El Toro, only taller, steeper, and faster. I doubt CP would ever add a Mega-Lite. While us enthusiasts know how forceful and awesome they are, the GP would probably perceive it as too small and similar to Maverick. As said in the post above me, I have much faith in CP and doubt they will disappoint. -

^ Not only that, but CP didn't do all that work to make the Ocean Motion area look nice only to build a parking lot coaster right next to it, lol. -

If said contract were true, they wouldn't sign it for nothing. I'm sure BG would offer them a comparable amount of money to "buy them out" and make up for the potential lost revenue. -

I thought Texas Giant was only $10 million? Mean Streak is a little bit taller and longer, but enough to jack the price up to $20 million? -
Saw Transformers 3 today. I liked it a lot, definitely better than the last and worth the bump up to XD 3D.

Perhaps I'm reading into it a bit much, but the reporter says something pretty intriguing in the first video. It's about 50 seconds in, she says, "He made up his mind that he wanted to get on the Ride of Steel, and that was that. Once he made up his mind to do anything, his sisters say, there was no denying him." I wonder if he was denied, but maybe started to make a scene and complain so they let him go?

Funny you should post this because, while I didn't go on the 4th, I did check the CP wait times app on my Ipod a few times and was surprised at how low the wait times were. I thought they were just wrong, but I guess not! Good for CP! -

$9 million isn't "cheap" by any means, even for a coaster. Sure Cedar Point has added $20+ million monsters, but Voyage was $8.5 million. -

I wasn't naming areas that need updated because of decreased people flow, trust me, I know how many people go to Soak City. My point was that it wouldn't hurt to add something up-to-date like, say Tasmanian Typhoon at Kings Island. The sad part about SC is people go there simply because "it's there," and nothing else. I guess as long as WWK is doing OK, however, they'll leave SC alone. -
The Most Shocking Ride Removals

I honestly wasn't *shocked* about Big Bad Wolf. It was clear that maintenance costs were/are rising, and parts were/are becoming more and more scarce for Arrow suspended coasters (and even Arrow coasters in general). BBW ran its course and it was time to move on...not to mention if a coaster like Eagles Fortress can close, than any Arrow suspended could be the next to go. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if we see more Arrow coasters in general disappear within the next 10 years. -

It would be cheaper right then and there to do that, sure, but as parts become more scarce and whatnot, it would probably be more economical in the long run to add something like what I mentioned above. Wildcat ran it's course, it might be time to move on before it gives them anymore trouble.
