Shockwave Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 (edited) Apologies if this has been posted already. http://www.mbpavilion.com/index.html The theme park will close its dorrs for the last time at the end of 2006. I am already planning an emergency credit run in Hurricane season. Edited April 17, 2010 by jedimaster1227
ParkTrips Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 heh yea it's been posted. If you seriously do go gimme a holler and I'll head over - can pay my last "respects" to Hurricane and say hello to my grandma. Jolly jolly
robbalvey Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 This is only a suggestion, but if you're going to spend the money to come over to the states, aren't there better parks to visit? Seriously, I've not heard many good reports about the Pavilion or the Hurricane. And while, yes it might be nice to get on a ride before it's demolished, I can't help to think that after you get off the ride you might experience "Da buyers remorse" ala Simpsons Ribwich episode! How about a trip to Cedar Point/Geauga Lake/Kennywood? Or Six Flags Great Adventure/Knoebel's/Hershey/Dorney? Or Six Flags New England/Lake Compounce/Canobie Lake/Funtown? Or Six Flags Great America/Wisconsin Dells? Or Holiday World/Beech Bend/Indiana Beach? I guess I've just never understood the "gotta rush out to the crappy woodie before the park closes" phenomenon, last experienced when Miracle Strip closed. If it was a *GOOD* ride, like they were closing Mindbender or something I'd be all "Dude, you gotta get out here before it's gone...." but it's the Myrtle Beach Hurricane! I can think of 100 better coasters you haven't been on to plan a trip around! --Robb "Just my advice." Alvey
DerekRx Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 I'd say maybe you'd want to come over and include it in a bigger trip, like maybe hitting Carowinds and Dollywood (maybe even BGE and PKD). I'm going in a few weeks to ride it, so just hold off on booking anything until after I get back. Besides that, hurricane season isn't a very good time to risk something so pricey. If this season is anything like the last couple, you could miss out on entire parks, and just be stranded someplace.
ParkTrips Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 DUH! We'd totally spend the night upstairs at my grandma's house for FREE And suggestions of PKD and no mention of Lake Winnie? EEK! I agree that there are better places to go but there are ALWAYS better places to go to SOMEONE. If he wants to go, fine, and I doubt he'd really fly over for just MBP (at least I hope not, LOL!)
robbalvey Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 I was just suggesting that for someone who has only been to the Florida region of the country, and while MBP, Carowinds, and Dollywood might be a "good" trip, I can just think of so many more options that would make for a much better trip. --Robb
socalMAN123 Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 More credits lost. *sigh* Well, there's always the future (when I'm moved out of this house and spend my own money). Brent "my coaster count is never gonna get higher" Shenton
ParkTrips Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 Robb - I wasn't implying that there aren't better trips just that there will always be other options presented by others and if Tom wants to go out of his way to the Pavilion then I say go for it. If he's going just to get the Hurricane and other local coasters (as mediocre as they all may be), so be it. Nothing personal! Contrary to popular belief I really DON'T have any problems with the Alveys. Well, except I'm jealous of Elissa's massive penis, but who that isn't a horse isn't?? - Joe, who honestly likes the Midwest or Easter PA/Jersey options as presented by Robb better than anything we have in the south, but that's my opinion

Or check out Tatsu...
Tomizzle For Rizzle Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 Pavilion and Family Kingdom, to Carowinds, to Dollywood, to Lake Winnie to SFOG would be a great trip and all are like 2-3 hours driving distance.
chaos Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 RCDB has a link to a petition to save this park. Maybe some of you should put those emergency trips on hold.
ECZenith Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 Balls... Besides Hurricane they also have a cool wild mouse ride. Hopefully they're sold to someone nearby. Sad to see the park is finally going to close.
jarmor Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 Am I the only one making a shirt from their website to wear to the park? I wonder if they will actually print that!
pkdcoaster Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 Well I do not think anything is going to change....plain and simple.....money talks. I do have to give them credit though giving it one more year so people can go one more time. Many owners would have leveled the place this past winter. I have many fond memories of always driving by when we were on vacation when I was a kid and the Corkscrew looked sooooo cool and all the lights shining in the salty air. While it is not the best park by any means.... it is a fun place and has a good atmosphere and I have many good memories and I plan to go back this year for a few more. JEFF
Deadromanticx Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 (First post here) I went to this park last summer. I actually thought it was really nice for its size. The rapids ride was pretty cool. I thought Hurricane was a lot of fun, despite what has been said on this thread so far. Eh, it is pretty sad to see it go.

But not too far away from Atlanta are parks like Carowinds, Dollywood, I can even finish off Six Flags Over Georgia (minus Deja Vu) while I'm out there! A credit run to Visionland/Lake Winnie might even be possible if I plan it well enough. A loop from Atlanta and back around maybe. Believe me, I'd love to get out to places like Cedar Point and the like, but I don't think it will be possible this year the way that my plans are working out. Next year I'll have more time for a bigger US trip that will probably entail some of the 'nicer' parks.
ECZenith Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 I would suggest waiting until 2007 for CP anyways. Apparently they're building a new coaster next season.
ParkTrips Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 Ok I don't mind going to Lake Winnie or Dollywood or whatever but sorry, no Visionland for me! I pretty much banned myself from that park out of sheer hatred for the place! Not even Rampage can get me back...
robbalvey Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 Ok I don't mind going to Lake Winnie or Dollywood or whatever but sorry, no Visionland for me! I pretty much banned myself from that park out of sheer hatred for the place! Not even Rampage can get me back... Wow...that bad, huh? I know our visit in '04 (I think) was so bad that we spent maybe an hour there? Enough time for Quaker to get his credit and get the hell out!!! --Robb
ParkTrips Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 I had free tickets good anytime last year and along with Rampage being a top 10 woodie for me and the park being only 90 miles away... I mean who wouldn't go?! Me. The hatred runs deep.
trustkill22 Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 I was there during Canadas March Break and going down the Blvd they had signs saying Thanks for the Memories Pavillion! But I was also going to say, there is alot of fight going on with it right now with locals that we were talking too saying they want it to stay because its a symbol of Myrtle Beach and has been there for quite some time and if they level it whats going to go there. More Hotels, Just what Myrtle Beach needs
Three Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 It may not be the best coaster around, but it's still a shame to see a historic park close down like this. Any chance of seeing some photos of MBP at Theme Park Review? If you don't have any plans to go back before they close Robb, maybe you could solicit pictures from members here like you did with SFA?
pkdcoaster Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 Myself and a couple others already gave him pics I even made a photo tribute post when the news was first announced but nobody cared http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23225 MB Pavilion pics JEFF
jamesdillaman Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 How far is MBP from the airport (MYR)? If it's not too far I can get down there sometime on my day off before it closes. btw... 100th post
ParkTrips Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 ^ Pretty close, actually Google Maps You can see the airport in the left hand of the window there and the Pavilion is in the right-hand side near where Route 501 meets Route 17. Geez I haven't been in the Myrtle Airport in YEARS but honestly, I don't think this park or woodie is worth FLYING in for!
