DerekRx Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Part 1: Weyerbacher Brewing and Which Brew They also serve other great beers, such as Ellen's favorite Hefe-Weisse Which Brew is owned by friends of Dan. Its Halloween decor also features some of Weyerbachers beers on tap. Decadence is Weyerbacher's 10th anniversary beer. Truly great stuff! Weyerbacher also bottles for Bethlehem Brew Works. Here's their Christmas beer going to bottle These barrels used to hold Bourbon, now they hold Prophesy, Insanity, and Heresy- Weyerbachers awesomest beers to date Owner, tour guide, and brewmaster, Dan Weirbach shows how they bottle over 1000 cases a week The Team enjoys the tour in front of the Fermenter, making some Old Heathen Stoudt. You can also mix and match your own case. Mine cost me $37. They got plenty of their own beers to sample....for free! Beat that Holiday World Our first stop for the weekend was a tour of Weyerbacher in Easton, PA
DerekRx Posted November 20, 2005 Author Posted November 20, 2005 Part 2: Great Wolf Lodge: The Waterpark The big old fireplace in the lobby looks really nice and warm When tipping buckets attack! Tonight on Fox Ellen found her favorite thing.....beavers! Here they re-enter the building A few slides go outside. Eventually a Family Raft Ride will do the same Speaking of lines....there aren't any, not even for the toilet bowl! And Tom found they serve Sam Adams on tap. Wally better come test the lines A big pool indoors with other activities for larger children.... Lily pad crossings... 2 hot tubs, one soley for adults and alcohol.... Another shot of the watercoaster and bucket play area... A Watercoaster and toilet bowl... Moms in bikinis and a wave pool... Complete with kiddie activity pools... But there's a waterpark to play in, even when its 30 degrees outside! Waiting in line stinks! Little critters theme the lobby Tom takes a load off since there is no beer here Apparently their advertising works great because the place was sold out.....and registration took between 40 and 80 minutes! Just opened a few weeks ago is one of the best Great Wolfs to date.
DerekRx Posted November 20, 2005 Author Posted November 20, 2005 Part 3: Great Wolf Lodge- the room and Barley Creek Brewing Company Neither Super nor Hoppy. Hey everybody, this beer's a great big phony! I'll let you make your own assumption about that based on this picture! Maybe the Super Hop will go better with my French Dip.... Sadly, my Black Widow Lager was pretty bland The place was pretty jumping, with football, musicians, and beer So we head to Barley Creek for some beers And little rodents scrounge through the trash The main lobby fireplace turns into story time Oooh, a meatnormous giftshop! Fireplace warm. Warm good! Meanwhile, Ellen just wants to sleep...I think Look at the coaster tools, entering into total geekdom together and a fireplace! Its also got a sofa bed We chose the standard room with 2 big beds No, this is not the Tower of Terror
zburns999 Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Great TR! Where was that Great Wolf Lodge? It looks awesome.
DerekRx Posted November 20, 2005 Author Posted November 20, 2005 Its right off of I-80 in the Poconos in Scotrun. (which kinda looks like Scrotum ) Between NYC and Philadelphia, this place should be pretty jumping as far as families are concerned. That's all for tonight. Stay tuned for Beer Festival pics tomorrow!
SharkTums Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Love the family guy reference at the end! I can't wait till we start getting some of these indoor waterpark resorts out here!
Hattuchili Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 LOL, great photo TR, Derek! Yeah, another German beer - Franziskaner Hefeweizen! It is funny to see all that German beer sorts in some US photo TR´s! --Sören
PhishyBrewer Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 I love how you refer to everyone on the tour as “The Team” It’s like you were on a mission to find tasty brews. And 1000 cases a month… man!!! I always seem to under estimate our new super bottle line at the Fairfield Brewery that packages 105,000+ cases a day. I’ll be right out to taste that Sam’s!
cfc Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Good job, Derek. How does the Great Wolf in Willy's Burg stack up to the one in the Poconos?
dandaman Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 "He's a great big phony!" I really do think that's the Tower of Terror hallway. Great PTR.
DerekRx Posted November 22, 2005 Author Posted November 22, 2005 ^^The Williamsburg GWL was pretty good, but I liked the Pocono one better. From the food service, more rides in the waterpark, a second gift shop in the waterpark, more seating and lawn chairs, a better hot tub layout, and the room keys (wristband instead of card) the Pocono one was constructed better. Not that the Williamsburg one was bad by any means, but the little things all add up to make it better. Plus it has a watercoaster and a toilet bowl, in addition to everything in Williamsburg. Now all these hotels need are racks to put wet bathing suits on in the room. Unfortunately, I was a wee bit tipsy last night, and forgot to take my camera with me when I left my friend's house for home. The Beer Fest pictures will have to wait until early December to be posted. Stay tuned!
DenDen Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 I SO misread the title of this thread. I thought it was the "great bear weekend", a la "a bunch of drunk hairy men".
DerekRx Posted December 31, 2005 Author Posted December 31, 2005 Part 2: Great Beers of America After doing the Great Wolf Lodge, we made our way over to Split Rock for their annual Great Beers of America festival. There's a good number of different breweries represented there, though most of them are local microbrews. Other big boys do come out though, like Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, Mike's, etc. Finally, about 35 samples later, Tom and Adam remembered they needed food. Sadly, Tom dropped most of his gyro on the ground Why yes I am! Not really good stuff, but a very appropriate name! ACE Buttmonkey Beer, bringer of happiness Starting.....to feel.....slightly.....intoxicated Wow, this looks like a great booth! One advantage I found out was that if you have a girlfriend or wife, they probably won't drink the heavy beers and then you get their sample too Ah! That explains everything! Let's get in line, then start some random chants Wow, there's a long line forming at Dogfish Head, wonder what all the fuss is about? Well, more like "too many glasses, not enough hands" I show off my ingenious new sampling glass If only they were at the event, they could have brought Soeren with them, and some Hefe too! Even Bethlehem Brew Works came up and brought out some of their brews, Apricot Coriander and Fegley's ESB Enough beer and no food and Derek will end up with a Crickett Hill tattoo Here's the Beer Monk, who looks sorta like Dave Thomas's long lost relative Ramstein had some pretty good German beers. The Winter Wheat Doppelbach was awesome Some random turtles enjoy watching drunk frat boys stumble around Rogue shows off their collection. Gotta love the Dead Guy Ale Things are starting to get crowded, though never as bad as on a Saturday Ellen doesn't understand "drink in moderation" Here Wally, Sierra Nevada came out just for you Stone came out for the party too. Their smoked porter was pretty good One of my favorite locals, Victory, brought their Hop Devil Another local, Lancaster Brewing Its been almost 24 hours since we've been to Weyerbacher, so we make it our first stop An early lunch service is held at St. Elissa's church I start off the day preparing for all the beer, kielbasa, gyros, and other evil foods that inflicted a 3 month case of heartburn last year
AznShortBoi8021 Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Wow! Looks like you guys drank a lot of alcohol. Were you drunk? You must have had a good time drinking, drinking, and drinking. I just can't imagine drinking that much beer in one day.
Hattuchili Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Wow, that looks like you had a good time! I have never visited a beer festival! It must be awesome to taste all the different beer sorts from so many countries!? --Sören
DerekRx Posted January 1, 2006 Author Posted January 1, 2006 No one got drunk, though we all did take a nice 2-5 hour nap when we got home. As far as beer festivals, don't worry Soeren, you'll have one at work again next October.
BelizeIt Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Wow that indoor Waterpark looks great! I guess if your in a cold weather state, then thats the way to go. I live in Los Angeles, and my favorite Waterpark is Raging Waters! Raging Waters is Hugh! (Over 50 acres) It's been around for a couple of decades and has a hugh variety of attractions. But if it's 30 degrees outside, I imagine your waterpark is the way to go!
FlyerACE1 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 That's my kind of girl That's my kind of girl too and just one of the many reasons why I'm marrying her! Live to Ride, Adam Revesz
