You Can Buy an Abandoned Theme Park for $2.2 Million!

Recommended Posts

Ever dreamed of owning a theme park? Okay, we all probably have. Now your dreams can come true via eBay for only $2.2 million. The abandoned Spreepark in Berlin, Germany is up for sale. The park has been closed since 2002. You can read the full article about it here: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57619304-1/buy-an-abandoned-amusement-park-on-ebay/.

It appears to be in really decrepit shape, but that's to be expected since it's been left to the elements for 12 years.

THEME PARK REVIEW THEME PARK! (TPRTP)

Yeah, that's a scary thought, isn't it?

(Gee, maybe we should use a KickStarter on this, hmm?)

It's certainly in a good location but would need tons of money poured into it. Most of it's larger rides have been removed (apparently this was to smuggle drugs in with the ride parts when they were shipped out) and even if they were still there they'd be inoperable by now I'd assume. The park has a pretty "colorful" history under its past owners from what I'm reading... They were pretty crazy.

I always thought there is so much potential for this place. The location is pure dynamite!

It could turn out to a mix between Tivoli Friheden and Tivoli Gröna Lund. Sure there are a few issues that needs to be adressed. For an example, they need to make a deal with the city so that they can cut down threes within the parks limit, in order to use the space optimally. Sure they need to save the landscaping around the park so that they don't ruin the atmosphere of the place, but within the park they need to be able to change the area.

Also I don't think anyone will buy this place with the intention to restore the current rides, if someone like Plopsa for an example would buy it, it would probably be only for the land. They would most likely then tear down all the attractions that are currently there and build the park up from scratch.

The parking is also an issue that's need to be adressed, but there is an currently unused area of 5 hector (think 2000 cars) on the other side of the river that could probably be bought. Then a pedestrian bridge similar to the Kaisersteg could be built for around €5 million. Sure it's a lot of money, but not if you are building an entire new park.

As I said, there are a lot of changes that need to be made, but if only they could get the city to cooperate, then there is huge potential for this place.

Below is a fast drawing of how you could make this place into a real park of world class. I putted some "standard rides" footprints in there, so you could get an idea of the scale, as well as what I mean with the landscape buffer around the park.

This would really be something.

Agreed. They could sell whatever steel for scrap to hopefully curb the cost of demolition. 2.2 million for that piece of land seems like a great price.

  • 1 month later...

I decided to check back up on this and see that it still hasn't sold, and it doesn't seem like there's been much interest in it either. I've never been to this park (or any park outside of North America for that matter) but its always sad to see a theme park waste away. I just don't think anyone is interested in opening another park in its location. The land it sits on also cannot be rezoned until 2061 I noticed while I was rereading the article, so it may remain abandoned for quite awhile at this rate.

^ It can not be rezoned. Still the area can't be "remodeled" if someone was interested in restoring the theme park, as no trees can be taken down etc..

Roland Mack, head of Europa Park, said the place is a bargain at this price, but that he would never touch it, as the people who runs Berlin are "crazy".

It's just such a waste, as it could be one of the best city parks in Europe.

^ Can or cannot be re-zoned? I'm assuming cannot because that would seem to make sense that someone would buy it for the land and just turn it into something else.

Sorry, as koppen said, it cannot be rezoned. I didn't know about the stipulations that trees can't even be taken down though. That would make it very undesirable for anyone, I think.

That probably is another big reason why there is no interest in the park.
