thomas2 Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Hey guys, I will be in NYC from april 14th 'till april 20th. Being a coaster nerd, I ofcourse want to go to SFGAdv. My first question is when is the best day to go. Since I want to spend an entire day at the park, it would have to be between the 15 and 19th. Will it be busy around that time? And should I look into buying a fast pass? Second question is how to get there. I won't be renting a car, so what is the best way to go from central Manhattan to the park and back? Thank you very much in advance!
cfc Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 There's some info on using public transportation to get to Great Adventure in this thread: http://themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=881767#p881767.
King of Ka Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 In my experience, crowds are generally pretty light on weekdays in April, I don't think it'd be worth the cash to get a Flashpass. The only major source of people on those days would be school trips, so if the lines are too long for your liking I would expect that you could buy a Flashpass when you got there or simply wait until they've left. At any rate, I don't think you can go wrong with a weekday in April, and even a Saturday would be manageable.
SharkTums Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 That is Spring Break week! Look at their schedule, it's the only weekdays the park is open during April. It could be very crowded if the weather is nice. Also, the public transportation is not that great (very similar to getting to SFMM from LAX but farther) make sure you can get to that park for opening or for sure be ready to buy Gold Flash Pass.
HappyEisentrout Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 That park can really fill up fast. I've seen it slightly rainy and there were, what the supervisor we were talking to us said, 600-800 people in the park. But also, I have seen the park so pact that every line was spilling onto the midway and the midways were packed. Maybe you can hope for a little Northeast cold front and scare some people away.
eltoro96 Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Stay away on Saturdays or promotional days!!! I've had some very bad luck (look at the SFGAdv discussion thread for my experience last year)
DiveMachine Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 In spring flash passes aren't needed, but if this was summer or fright fest, that would be a different story
nitro4ever Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Stay away from Saturdays. Sundays and Wednesdays are good days, but you never know for sure. Try to go in the pouring rain, the park is empty.
thomas2 Posted January 18, 2011 Author Posted January 18, 2011 Thanks for all the answers! Looks like I'll have to prepare myself for a busy day How is the park's policy when it rains? Do they close any coasters down? And how fast do they close them (light drizzle <=> pourdown)
Wood Dragon 1988 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I've been to SFGAd twice in April, and had two very different experiences. The first was in mid April on a Sunday in 2008, and it was one of my best days at a Six Flags park. Hardly any lines, got all the credits in a few hours, and rode El Toro and Nitro till I had my fill in the evening. The other was on openeing day (Saturday) 2009, and the park was even less busy, but only half the rides were open, operations were one train and slow, Nitro valleyed, etc. This was all due to very high winds and cold temps, which obviously were out of the park's control, nontheless made for a subpar park experience. I felt very bad for my friend who only got about half the credits after a 5 hour drive from West PA. So my only suggestion to you, is if you have two days as an option, look at the forcast and make sure its not going to be too windy, rainy, cold, etc. But then you also have to include the spring break factor. For parks in my area, Spring break week is usually not too busy, but I've heard it gets bad at Great Adventure. Hope you have fun, I think SFGAd is one of the best parks on the East Coast! edit- about your question about rain, I don't believe they close anything for a light drizzle, but as mentioned above, New Jersey in April can still be cold and windy, so rain coupled with rain cold lead to a pretty sucky day. As I said, I really think weather is the most important issue that time of year.
larrygator Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Try to go in the pouring rain, the park is empty. Really, so it's good to go most of the major coasters aren't running? Really?
