CoasterCrazy Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 I went to Publix today and I saw a sign on the door that says "No Smoking By Order of ________ County Indoor Air Ordinance Effective April 1, 2004" I can't believe that I have never noticed this sign before. After seeing this sign I started to wonder if other Counties/States have banned smoking in public buildings? I blacked out the name of the county because I don't want the name of the county that I live in on the internet.
FlyingScooter Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 It's been like that with city orders in Cleveland for well over 15 years. When they stopped smoking in the malls, it took some getting used to it. They actually had a smoking ban in a cleveland suburb where you could not smoke in public areas, period, indoors or outdoors, it did not matter. they would, however, let you smoke in your car.
Sir Clinksalot Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 CA has been like that for at least 5 years, if not longer.
BarryH Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Florida has a "Clean Indoor Air Act." You can't smoke indoors anywhere except in bars. Restaurants don't have smoking sections anymore, not even outdoor smoking seating. When I travel outside FL, I am sometimes surprised when I am asked "smoking or non-smoking?" at a restaurant.
AllisonY2K Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 FL has been that way. usually you can only smoke inside if the place allows it and they don't serve food. which means it's basically limited to bars and clubs now.
RCoasterny Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 In New York State, smoking is banned in all public indoor places, including bars. I'm not a smoker, so I was thrilled to hear the news about the law being in effect. Now I can finally enjoy going out to bars and not coming home reeking of cigarette smoke.. The only exception to the smoking ban law is if the place was only open to members only, and of course, your own home.
Wes Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Yeah, California has been like this for a long time, and it's a wonderful thing.
ScOtT k Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Denver made a law like this about a year ago. I think it's great. Smoking is a disgusting habit and it bothers me when I go to a bar and there's someone puffing away right next to me.
Twister II Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 ^No not only Denver, but Colorado as a whole. It started in public buildings, then moved to bars here. Even a small town had the law, no smoking in public buildins and they didn't even have any! LOL Go no smoking law!
Mind Eraser Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Smoking is a disgusting habit and it bothers me when I go to a bar and there's someone puffing away right next to me. That's like going to a horse track and complaining about the gambling. -kip-
Louise Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Anti-smoking laws are starting to come into force here in the UK now, albeit slowly. My brother-in-law (a pub landlord) received a letter a coupla months back stating that 20% of his pub must be non-smoking by such and such a date along with no smoking in food serving areas (irrelevant as his pub doesn't serve food) or at the bar. Personally, I think this is the way to do it: I smoke, as do around 50% of the regulars in my local boozer, but I'm a considerate smoker - i don't light up if anyone is eating, has health problems, or generally if they ask me not to because it bothers them. As much as I agree it's a pretty bad habit, it's my choice, and as long as I'm not affecting anyone else with it, I have the right to do so. I agree that smoking should be banned in public buildings such as malls, and in places where food is served, but in pubs and bars... Over here in England where pub culture is a huge part of many peoples' lives, and smoking is extremely common among regular pubgoers in many areas... I think it would be very difficult to bring in a complete ban. Smoking and non-smoking sections are probably the way to go in pubs over here, as long as the areas are well divided and ventilated obviously, otherwise it's pointless. Other Brits may know what I mean when I say JD Wetherspoon's do it pretty well. Let the smoker-bashing begin, I'm sure... Lou- "has a nasty little habit" -ise

It's more like going to a cafe and sitting in the non smoking section, yet the smoke is still drifting around.

Lou- "has a nasty little habit" -ise Yes but the JD Weatherspoons I have by my area does a real bad job of it, the smoke just flies over everyone, the smoking area is just next to the bar and after a certain time you can smoke in other areas of the pub and in fact theres a small area for non smokers but it still clouds with smoke, I smoke and I stay far away from the non smokers but most will sit on the tables near the non smoking area when you can smoke. Annother problem alot of smoking areas in a few weatherspoons are always near the bar area :< but hey. Annother note, there is a pub down my way which is smoke free and you have to go outside, same with a night club next door which has a back door for you to go and smoke in, it gets crowded, besides that it seems everywhere else you can smoke anywhere in the pub/club and Resaurants and shopping areas etc etc
SLUSHIE Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I live in CA so I'm used to it. I remember we went to Steak N Shake outside CP and they asked if we wanted smoking or non. I found that weird.
DenDen Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Florida has a "Clean Indoor Air Act." You can't smoke indoors anywhere except in bars. Restaurants don't have smoking sections anymore, not even outdoor smoking seating. When I travel outside FL, I am sometimes surprised when I am asked "smoking or non-smoking?" at a restaurant. Here in Fort Lauderdale, everyone has outdoor smoking sections, and bars that serve food (even just snacks!) are not permitted to have indoor smoking, even if the food is only served outside, but prepared inside. (We have a couple bars here that found a snag in the law, one put their kitchen outside, gilling style, so smoking is allowed everywhere on the premises, and a couple restaurants put walls between the bar and restaurant and split them into 2 different businesses!) There's no smoking in CA, and I believe Pittsburgh. (correct me on that!)
Scaparri Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Yeah, I know Bloomington, IN has a no smoking ban. I think it might actually be a statewide thing. I'm not really sure.
RtherBOnACoaster Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Yea like everyone else from CA said there is no smoking in anything. No Restraunts! I remember last year I was in Missouri I went Ruby Tusdays and was forced to sit near the bar their where the drunks were smoking like chimneys. But luckly it was late and there was only a few people there. The night before I went to a place called O'Connels Pub I think and it was veerry smoky in there
Coasterlicious Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I think its soo nice to have a smoke free new york...
USRoadTripper Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I wish Tennessee would get on this bandwagon, even if it is just for public buildings like restaurants and bowling alleys. I don't care if people smoke in bars and clubs because I'm not sensitive to it, and don't mind if people smoke there. And if it only limited to a certain type of business, people who are sensitive can easily avoid it. But seeing as how tobacco is a major cash cow for Tennessee, I bet we'll be one of the last to go smokeless. -Julie (100th post!)
