kat11joe Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005   Man dies after 50 hours of computer gamesSouth Korean left seat in Internet cafe only to use toilet, take brief naps. Updated: 6:43 p.m. ET Aug. 9, 2005 SEOUL, South Korea - A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday. The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing online battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said. Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play online games on Aug. 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said. We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone. Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe. After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported. He died a few minutes later, it said. South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry. Sir Clinksalot Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 ^ I can't help but feel sorry for his family. He had left his job to play games professionally and earn money that way. I personally think it's very sad that someone's died this way
Wes Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 I skipped a few days of college because I stayed up too late playing Dr. Mario. Ah, college.
Token Yankee Guy Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 I heard that on the radio, but I heard like 42 hours of gaming, not 50
Wappy Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 How sad he was only 28, however a 28-year old man should've known better! !
FlyingScooter Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 That is sad. Longest game session i did was like 29 hours straight when i had the stomach flu and couldn't sleep anyway.
Sir Clinksalot Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Dude, when Street Fighter II came out for SNES we spent about 36 hours straight playing it. Of course there was like 6 of us since it's more of a "Social" game.
Imhotep Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Now heres a guy with his priorities in check!! Its good he realized video games were more important than working or family. At least he died doing what was most important to him!! Maybe Liu Kang can give his Eulogy. Of course Im being sarcastic. I agree with bocakey. His family must not only be sad, but extremely frustrated and upset with him. I know I would be.
FlyingScooter Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Let's hope if he had life insurance he didn't cash it in for tokens.
benzo41190 Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 OMFG, how can anyone play that long. I can bearly be on the computer for more than 5 hours without going outside or eating.
BiCoastal Kid Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 ^WTF else is there do in South Korea? I mean, he COULD go work in a factory for a few cents an hour, but when I compare the two side to side, there's an obvious victor.
scarymy Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Thats reard but its a long time 50hours so maybe his brains exploded:D
KrakenKing Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 Longest gaming session I ever had was around 48 hours when "The Sims Online" first released... Now that the game has goen down the toilet, I don't play it anymore. The closest I've gotten to beating that record was 32 hours on "World of Warcraft"... I've stopped obsessive gaming though, so I spend no more than 10hrs straight playing a game...
pvcoasterguy Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Wow... that's very sad. So what the lesson learned from this? Anyone? Anyone? Read the warnings in the game's manual... they're not kidding!
COOOOLkid Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 That's just sad (but also a bit funny because it's sad...) since when did South Korea had "large and highly developed game industry. "?? I'm sure there's nothing to do in SK...
