CARS! The Car Super Thread

Recommended Posts

Im much more interested in Hydrogen cells, rather than hybrids.

I think the issue with hybrids is that if you drive them any way other than super-eco, then they really arent that much more efficient than a regular petrol engine. Mostly it seems down to them often having smaller engines, so you really have to work it hard on a motorway, which ends up using more fuel than a bigger engine going the same speed.

I really dont have much faith in hybrids.

And battery powered cars will always struggle with range, even though they are now capable of the performance.

In the future though, I just know Im going to miss the noise of going through a tunnel at 8k revs.

^ Honda has a hydrogen fuel cell car in testing right now. I believe a few people are driving them, but have leased them from Honda for the sole purpose of "checking 'em out."

Having such technology more widespread would be a significant advancement in freeing us from our dependency on oil. And that's what we need to do.

I have a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix, it's my first car (drove an 04 ford Sports Trac but my mom pretty much drove it more so she ended up keeping it) and had it for 3 1/2 years so far. Only has 56,000 miles on it and I have had little problems with it thus far...

One of the reasons I love this car is because of the two-tone interior!

Don't care for the color (dealer were out of red ones), but love the car!

Eh, I'm not a fan. I really, really like the "normal" Mini, but this just looks a bit awkward to me. Also with that butt sticking out the back, it's tough to call it a coupe, looks more like some weird flattened hatch.

It will probably be a boatload of fun to drive though, which is really the point!

The Mini Coupe Concept that leaked last week is indeed headed for production. Here is am image for those who missed it:

BMW Chairman Norbert Riethofer paid a visit to the Mini factory in Oxford England this week to inform staff members that they will soon have two new cars to build. The first confirmed model for production is the Coupe concept that was previewed online last week ahead of its Frankfurt Motor Show rollout. The Coupe will be joined by a second concept at the show which in all likelihood will be the oft-rumored speedster version of the coupe.

Reithofer did not announce any timing for when production of the new models would start production. Also unknown at this time is whether the Coupe and Speedster will be available only in John Cooper Works form or in base Cooper and S flavors as well. We'll just have to look over the press release after the jump and wait until Frankfurt to find out.

I have a 2001 Jetta

...I friggin hate it. Despite their semi-luxary class that they produce, their cars in general SUCK.

All the electronics (window buttons, cd player, tape player, a/c outlet) are broken. The bottom of the bumper is falling off because its plastic and the hooks are stripped. I've never been in a car accident, been pulled over, or gotten any type of ticket, EVER. I'm a very safe driver, (but not the a-hole going 50 in the left lane on the highway kind of safe driver) so I don't know how or why the hooks are stripped. I change the oil regularly and take it to get serviced regularly and so far I've spent $6,500 on a car that I paid $7,000 to get in a total of 1 year. When I bought the car, everything worked.

Next car is coming from Japan for sure.

^ You've just spelled out why we buy cars from across the OTHER ocean at our house. True, Audis, VWs, and BMWs have been incredibly reliable for some people, but most people I've known with them always have electrical problems at some point. Not sure why that is, but...it is.

Germans can't do electrical work worth a damn. The powertrains are solid, and thats more important to me, though I'd be worried to test their durability with these fancy $8000 computer controlled clutches and crap. Buy German but buy simple, not the latest technologies

Add the Brits to that list. Also, to me, it's funny how the yachting world seems to parallel the automotive as well. Remember this yacht from Casino Royale?

It's a British-made Sunseeker Predator 108'. I spent a lot of time on these and fell in love with the look and the design. Then I sea trialed a few and started talking with the mechanics. Quite simply, they're crap.

2001-2003 were pretty bad years for VW, but things have got a lot better since; particularly the MK5 cars. My 97 Jetta was rock solid, as is my 04 R32. Currently it would take a lot to pull me away from VW/Audi (or anything German), they just drive so amazingly well; I mean they are designed and built by a culture that drives for pleasure.

Interestingly enough VW is considered one of the most reliable brands everywhere but the US.

Just read this cool (although very brief!) article: 100 Years Of Audi.
