Six Flags Darien Lake (SFDL) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if anyone can help me. Everytime myself and my family make the trip to Darien Lake down from Toronto, we always have this debate . . . some of my family members like to camp and some prefer to stay in the lodge . . . so here is the debate . . . is it cheaper for us to camp/lodge for 2 or 3 nights and get 'free' admission to the park . . . or . . . is it cheaper for any or all of us to get season passes . . . and . . . is there a discount when you camp/lodge with a season pass . . . and . . . if so, what is the difference in price/savings . . . any help would be great . . . thanks! . . . I just noticed that park admission is no longer included in campground/lodge purchases! Please, if anyone can help me, it would be very much appreciated!

Ok, when Darien Lake was teasing for some "big surprise stunt" by Mr Wallenda, I was NOT expecting this huge left turn! How does one simply attempt to ride a MOTORCYCLE across a high wire?!?! I have to admit that would be quite the spectacle and I really wish I could go and check it out for myself! I wonder if they're going to televise this in anyway? Probably not but that would be great publicity for the park in my mind! Here's the official announcement via Facebook

Sorry for the delay in posting these, but some real life issues got in the way. Hopefully these won't prove too dated, but here are my photos from Preview Day.

At least they left an inner tube in memory of 'Cuda Falls! I see that Galaxy Theater's "mine house" is now painted black, all black, but no new mural on the front.

I have just one question for Mr. Peabody, was the bunny house still in front of 'Cuda Falls' "grave"?

I would highly doubt it...new slides may go in in the near future but not in that space. That area is way too prime of a space to waste on new water slides, especially having them separated from the entire rest of the water park area. I would expect any and all future water slides to be near the rest of the water park attractions.

I do expect the old cuda falls area to turn into something big for the park in the next few years with our next truly new "themed area with a new coaster, some flats and maybe even something the park has been missing in one of those great interactive dark rides

I forgot that Darien Lake was missing a dark ride of some sort. They haven't had one since Nightmare at Phantom Cave, but I don't think anyone would want to see a big ugly building when they first walk in to the park.

Maybe they can turn the old 'Cuda Falls area into a new kiddie land to replace Beaver Bros. Bay, It would be convenient for parents with little kids to have the kiddie land in the front of the park so that they don't have to walk a long way to get there.

In my opinion I think it would be pretty cool to see them put the Sidewinder there with the return of UFO and scrambler perhaps? I dont mean to be pushing the old rides on the thread or anything but hey, that's 3 "new" rides in one year, all of which I guess count as thrill rides to the general public right? They could do a lot with that land though, perhaps maybe we'll actually get an announcement of some sort this year? Guess we'll just have to wait and see!

I say a Mack Twist 'n' Splash, that's just one of my many wild guesses! If Darien Lake can replace one old water slide complex with a water ride, they could do it again!

^ & ^^Both a Mack Splash battle and Twist-N-Splash would be perfect as both water park and dry park guests can ride together.

That actually is not a bad idea. Beaver Brothers Bay is quite a small and cramped kid's area with no room for expansion unless they reworked the midways around it to make more room.

Yes this is actually a very good idea. They could add one new ride along with two older rides along with a new one and maybe even bring in the magic crept from celebration city and a new coaster or a mack splash battle and that may be quite an impressive offering.

I do highly doubt that they will move beaver brothers bay anytime soon. They really don't have a new spot to put it and they have everything they need and want where it sits currently. At some point they may move it, but if they do, they are giving the park an entire overhaul

^I think that Darien Lake can move the Beaver Bros. Bay rides and the kiddie coaster and the kiddie bumpers cars ride to the plot where 'Cuda Falls was to make a new kiddie land that closer to the park's entrance/gate. That's if they wanted to move the kiddie rides there, but that area is prime "real estate" for something else (a new coaster).

Why must these crazy ideas only circulate on this thread? Why move kiddie land if it's already in a great shady spot. If we want the park to build a new big ride it should be in Cuda's area.

I blame myself for all this talk about Darien Lake moving the current kiddie land. What I said was kind of crazy since Darien Lake used to have the kiddie land closer to the gate where Hook's Lagoon and Crocodile Isle are now.

They had some stuff on the news about it. Apparently it went off without a hitch. It's all about physics and he knows that, hence he had someone ride on a swing type of thing below the wire. He claimed it was more dangerous but in reality it makes it safer. Either way it sounded like it brought in a pretty good crowd, which is exactly the idea. Hopefully they will do more things like this through the year to bring crowds in as they definitely need them.

Went for the first time in 15 years (!) yesterday. My basic thoughts are:

-The buildings in the park look great. They've worked hard to upgrade the food options and it shows. Anchor Bar looked packed. Also, some of the flat rides looked really great. I thought the Huss Ranger and the Sleighride looked outstanding.

-Lots of areas that were newish looked outstanding. The kiddie area was very attractive. The new shops where Beaver Bros' is looked great.

-Things that don't look so great: the abandoned mini golf under Viper, ROS, Mind Eraser.

-Love the Fascination still being there. Loads of fun and only having one attendant w/coin slots means maybe it stays awhile longer.

-The one train on everything situation is horrible. That they're offering express passes for rides if the wait exceeds 45 minutes tells me that the park must often be so dead that they aren't afraid to risk a jam up at Guest Services for that. Same with the Sunny Day Guarantee and Ride Guarantees.

-The blacktop sucks. Thank god Cedar Fair is moving away from it. Hopefully these guys follow suit.

-I can picture the park falling off hard attendance wise between the rider death on ROS and the fact that the rest of the major coasters are kind of terrible. Predator is lousy, Mind Eraser is exceptionally bad, Motocoaster is pretty "meh", and Boomerang is shockingly decent for what it is but still a Boomerang. The place needs some shade structures, new trees, and a coaster that manages to better fill the gap between the kiddie rides and the giant multi-inversion monsters that the park runs. Predator simply isn't a reasonable option for kids to be introduced to coasters and RMCing it doesn't fix that gap. A nice mine train or one of those new fangled Gerstlauer family coasters would be a great fit. If you're dedicated to a one train only philosophy, build something with a big train too.

As far as I've been able to determine, it was around 1997 that CPH #241 was removed. There have been a couple photos over the years that show the Locomotive and Coaches in Storage at Darien Lake. I believe the last reported sighting was 2007 or 2009, but it may have been removed since then.

Are your sure? It was shown and listed in the 1997 map, so Darien Lake might have removed the train in 1997 after the season was over. It was part of the old "Adventure Land" kiddie land that was in the front of the park where the water park is now.

^My thoughts exactly, regarding the removal of the Chance "CP Huntington" train that Darien Lake had. The train tracks must have been removed prior to the construction of Ride of Steel.

Also I'm curious about if Darien Lake has any remains of past rides/attraction beside the noteworthy ones like Floodgate Falls, two of the old "Adventure Land" kiddie rides (the kiddie coaster and the kiddie bumper cars) and the rocks on Galaxy Theater?
