Six Flags Darien Lake (SFDL) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

For some reason they can't seem to get RoS going good during the rain. I think a lot of it has to do with the timing and the braking. The brakes stop the train too quickly in the rain and the train slowly coasts back into the station. The PLC probably gets funky too.

After much debating, I ended up going to the season pass preview day. I did not take any pictures, because it wasn't really worth it, and another member already said that they would. Here's a trip report.

Ride of Steel: Closed all day. A group of ops were standing around not knowing what to do. The blue train was on the track, with the red nowhere in sight. Yet. Also, the food stand in front of RoS was in the midst of being painted.

Predator: One train op. I had a decent two rides today. No signs of Lake Monster.

Blast Off: Nothing special, got one ride before it closed.

Mind Eraser: Wasn't able to ride before it broke down.

Viper: One ride. The ride ran decent, and it will run two trains this year as the side accents on this train were blue. The entrance sign got painted, and the mini golf course is still abandoned.

Boomerang: Did not ride.

Motocoaster: Closed

Twister: The ride today was EXTREMELY WEAK. No flips, and a boring cycle. The gondola brake even had trouble stopping the ride.

UFO: Ride pad still empty, no movement.

Ranger: Actually running, and an 8 flip cycle.

Cuda Falls: The area has been completely cleared. The slides and supports are gone, and the pool has been filled. To one reader's excitement, Floodgate Falls is still standing. The bridge is also still up, as well as the fluffy, fluffy bunny filled with medicine and goo building. The hill is not that large, but the area is actually smaller then some are hyping it up as. A small coaster like a Eurofighter would fit no problem, but more work would be needed for a large attraction.

Galaxy Theater: The building is still bare, and the front was painted an ugly indigo color. Major work is still needed for when Nik Wallenda's show begins in June.

Overall, some aspects of the park look better, but a lot still needs work. I hope that the five year plan includes a lot of attractions, because the park is starting to look more bare year after year. I covered everything that I recall, but don't hesitate to ask any questions.

That area is actually a massive area. You're not going to be able to judge its size from looking at. If the hill is leveled you're looking at a flat area that's roughly the size of Maverick (for scale). That area is about 3 acres.

I was just saying the size of the actual hill. If you clear that and possibly remove the slingshot, the space is much bigger. The area could easily fit Predator's footprint if cleared. Then the locker building can be removed and used as the new entrance to a ride. It really surprised me to see UFO's pad still there. I think that they may reuse it someday.

I didn't know that the 'Cuda Falls area was about 3 acres. As for the fluffy, fluffy bunny filled with medicine and goo building, they can probably reuse it if they decide to build a coaster in that place. The fluffy, fluffy bunny filled with medicine and goo building building can be reused for the station and/or gift shop. They can always relocated the lockers.

As for coasters in where 'Cuda Falls was, I thinking of like something with a small or medium sized footprint like a Gerstlauer spinning coaster, a S&S El Loco, a Gerstlauer Eurofighter, or a clone of SFDK's Superman: Ultimate Flight (without Superman of course!). But Slingshot would be removed or relocated to another part of the park.

If the park were to build something really big, they should build up the area by twister. They could remove the speedway, and there is a huge area behind that. Until then, they should at least do a little more work with the hill, because it's an eyesore. It's basically a huge pile of dirt.

^Exactly what I was going to say about the 'Cuda Falls area regarding the hill, it must go if Darien Lake is going to put a new coaster there. Floodgate Falls would have to go because it a part of the Rainbow Mountain/'Cuda Falls hill, but the bridge can stay if they decided build a second water park entrance by the new coaster/attraction.

I know it's been mentioned before, but after the park is done being focused on a new slide complex should be put in. There's a good plot of land between Swirl City and Tornado.

O.K. from what I'm seeing here regarding the plot of land between Swirl City and Tornado is that there could be room for a small water slide like a halfpipe or a kiddie slide complex.

They could also do a mat racer of some sort, if they wanted to. It would look very pretty right next to the lake. I'm sure the service road could be changed to fit with a slide there.

A 6-lane version of this would be cool.

They can use the plot of land between Swirl City and Tornado to build a new service road if Darien Lake is going put in a new mat slide complex between Elk Lake and Crocodile Isle.

Looks the same as last year's map, but without 'Cuda Falls on the map and Galaxy Theater being on the map again. But the bridge that lead to 'Cuda Falls is still on the map, but this makes wonder if Darien Lake is planning for to use the old 'Cuda Falls bridge as a second entrance to the water park in 2015?

Galaxy theater is on the map... Its that blue building between viper and the go carts. The bridge is still up so I'm not surprised its still on the map. I personally think the bridge looks nice when you enter the park, so I hope they don't remove it.

I would like to say thank you to all that braved the weather this past weekend to go to the park, and then deliver a trip report. I am very sad that there were not more noticeable changes to the park this year. Even simple things like the concrete or a painted coaster. Even the fact that the new map is the same as the old one, with just adding trees to the old cuda falls area.

Also,i am very happy that other have noticed that plot of open land between swirl city and tornado. I think another complex similar to the existing swirl city may actually git in there. I also like the idea of the mat racers between the lake and crocodile isle. I would even go as far a putting a speed slide complex over there. I do however think the area where cuda falls sat is a very big area, if you look at it correctly. You have to include the old changing rooms and even back into the first part of the parking lot. If you include that, you definately have a very large area for which to expand.

^Changes have been made. I went to the "Dress Rehearsal" (friends and family of employees got into the park for free from 6 - 8 PM on May 1st; I'm friends with one of the guys in marketing) and what was pointed out were things like Viper's newly painted sign a couple of people have mentioned. Perry's Ice Cream Parlor got a fresh new paint job, and Jo's Eatery is in the process of being painted (IIRC it seemed about 50 - 75% done when I saw it.) RoS is also supposed to run its second train this year. I can't remember if it was already mentioned in this thread, but Beaver Bros. Cafe' is getting 9 new gourmet burgers added to the menu.

^ I remember seeing a picture posted on their twitter page after the sneak preview that showed the Emporium and to me it looked like they painted that too - but I'm not 100% certain... I tried to look for the image but I couldn't find it on their page for some reason, but what I DID find has popped up a few times on this thread, A LIGHTING PACKAGE ON THE BIG WHEEL. The Darien Lake cover photo on Twitter showcases the nice new green viper train with what appears to be the big wheel, but the wheel has lights on it! I'm pretty sure it's just an old photo, or a different wheel (Because there are people inside of the gondolas and there were no lights on that wheel last year...) It makes me wonder why they would put a nice updated picture of the Viper - which they've been using the pictures with the green track and yellow train since the coaster was painted black... yet they won't use an updated Big Wheel picture. Oh Well, just a little thing I always notice - this park LOVES old photos No hate intended

Maybe it's time that Darien Lake take "updated" photos of their rides for "corporate" use IE on the site, on the maps, and in ads. I don't blame Darien Lake for using old photos and video footage of their rides in their corporate media, maybe it's all they have!

I did attend the preview day and take photos. I was occupied this weekend installing a new graphics card in my home desktop system but will upload the photos within a day or two. I managed two rides on the Predator, which was not too bad in the front seat considering the cold. It should smooth out as the season progresses and the train gets broken in. Unfortunately, I did not stay long enough to see them open Ride of Steel but I should be returning in a few weeks.

Well if you went to the park, you can answer our question on the lights on the giant wheel. I for one have been hoping for that restoration for years now. I think the park is totally different at night with no lights on the giant wheel. I don't think it would make so big of a difference if it wasn't so tall and didn't dominate the parks skyline like the one at DL does. Heck, it was so iconic that they used it as part of the park logo for a while
