BeemerBoy Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 PS: If anyone doesn't think the drums and bass on Billie Jean is one of the best produced backing beats ever, you are lying or deaf. I nominate a very close second to that - Peter Piper by Run DMC.
Philrad71 Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 I think acoustics seemed to be the biggest problem; either that, or NBC did a really crappy job with the sound (you could hardly hear Springsteen half the time). I agree that it is all about the acoustics - this was your typical "arena rock" sound where it is no where near as good as it would be in a club, theater, or bar, which normally has wayyyy better acoustics. I have not been impressed at all with any of the recent SB halftime shows due to the crappy sound - IE: McCartney, Prince, U2, Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Boss, etc...and I am a huge fan of all of these artists!
DiSab Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Springsteen rocked the house, though I will agree that NBC did a crappy job with the sound and whatnot. WOAD did seem a little out of place - I personally think that My Lucky Day might have been a better fit, but it was a solid performance in the end. That was a good tidbit of his concerts - just a 13-minute excerpt of all that happens in his 3.5+ hour shows. I will hopefully get a chance to see him at least once on his new tour, if not more. A close second goes to U2 - I think that the names of all the victims of the 9/11 attacks scrolling during "Where the Streets Have No Name" might be one of the best (if not the best) moment of any sporting event entertainment ever.

I nominate a very close second to that - Peter Piper by Run DMC. I'll agree with both Billie Jean and Peter Piper. I think the Foo would be a good halftime show, but with the huge names they've brought in for the past 5 or so, I don't think they are there in terms of fan base. They do have a great following though. My top 3 SB performances: MJ Prince McCartney I'm sorry, but I think the Aerosmtih, Nelly, and Britney ones was one of the worst. Aerosmith would have been good by themselves.
gerd.muller Posted February 5, 2009 Author Posted February 5, 2009 I'm sorry, but I think the Aerosmtih, Nelly, and Britney ones was one of the worst. Aerosmith would have been good by themselves. That´s my opinion, too. Aerosmith for themselves would really kick-a.. , but being produced by MTV, I think they tried to reach a wider and younger audience by mixing Aerosmith with Nelly, Britney and the rest. Even Ben Stiller as the crazy Fitness Coach from that creepy movie did a a very poor job at this show.
bigstevet07 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I would say that they have definitley gotten better since MTV can't bastardize them anymore. I just felt like Aerosmtih, Britney, and Nelly didn't mess well together.
BeemerBoy Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 So here's a fun little game you can play at home (we were doing this during the halftime yesterday): pick a band to play the superbowl half time that released their first album in the last twenty years or so. The only requirements are a great live presence, and has actual musical talent (which eliminates most of the American Idol/processed pop crap that clogs the airwaves). Our consensus picks: Green Day and Metallica. dt I think I've got it. It's a little over 20 years now, but I'm putting my money on Bon Jovi finally getting the invite. I also agree with the Foo Fighters fitting in well with the Super Bowl stuff, but the more I think about it, the more I'm amazed Bon Jovi hasn't done it yet. They're the perfect pop-rock group that has the fan base needed to fit the bill.
Hercules Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I was going to mention Bon Jovi. I actually had to check and make sure they had not been a halftime act, because it is crazy to think that they haven't.
SharkTums Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Weren't they talking at one point about moving the super bowl up north? Giving it a chance in a cold weather stadium? Bon Jovi rocking a New Jersey or New York Superbowl could be pretty epic. I'm also shocked to hear they haven't done it before.
Hercules Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I don't think anyone wants a Super Bowl in East Rutherford, NJ. Hell, I don't even want to go to East Rutherford for anything!
Meteornotes Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I can't imagine the NFL will ever hold the superbowl in either the south, or in a domed stadium in the north. The corporate sponsors spend too much money for them to sit in the cold at Green Bay or somewhere similar. Bon Jovi is an excellent choice, and one that none of us thought of when we had this original discussion. Good call. dt
bigstevet07 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 WOW, Bon Jovi has never done one? I didn't mention them because I figured they have but I couldn't think of it. They would be perfect.
coolhandluke Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 My only guess as to why Bon Jovi hasn't done one is because of Jon's involvement in the AFL, but even that doesn't make a whole lot of sense since plenty of ex-NFL players were involved in the AFL (Ron Jaworski, John Elway, etc). But yes, Bon Jovi would be top of my list. And while they may not be "arena-friendly" enough, I'd love to see the Goo Goo Dolls do a halftime show.

Hercules Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I can't imagine the NFL will ever NOT hold the superbowl in either the south, or in a domed stadium in the north. Bon Jovi is an excellent choice, and one that none of us thought of when we had this original discussion. Good call. dt Fixed and fixed.
BeemerBoy Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 And just several years ago the NFL chose the wonderful winter vacation paradise of Detroit to host the big game (which is actually the frickin' second time for them!?!). After that, I put nothing past the league. Weren't they talking at one point about moving the super bowl up north? Giving it a chance in a cold weather stadium? Yep. If I remember right, I think that was actually one of the selling points to the Giants proposing a new stadium. I may be wrong, but I thought the NFL said something along the lines of "build it, and you'll get to host the game one year."
