gerd.muller Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 What was your favourite super bowl halftime-showact? Maybee janets and justins "Nipplegate" in 2004 or will it be Bruce Springsteen tonight? In the moment, that´s my favourite, Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Nelly, and Mary J. Blige 2001 in Tampa. but we´ll see, what Bruce Springsteen will give us tonight! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd1YepWIaeM&feature=related
cfc Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 ^I go along with Bruce and Prince. But, for the most part, Super Bowl halftime shows are, seriously, not very good. (Still, using rock acts beats the "Up with People" crap they used to do during the 1970s.) BTW, your embedded video doesn't work.
Hercules Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 In my opinion, The E Street Band blew pretty hard last night. My favorite would have to be Michael Jackson, when he stood there for 2 full minutes without doing or saying anything. CLASSIC!
BeemerBoy Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 In my opinion, The E Street Band blew pretty hard last night. Are you a Springsteen fan? Just curious why you thought so. For what they did with the time restraints they had, I felt they made the most of it. Fifteen minutes of Springsteen is the ultimate tease though. It's like laying in bed and having Heidi Klum suddenly burst through your door straight out of one of those Victoria Secret commercials. Yet instead of what you're hoping for, she walks over, kisses you on the forehead, says goodnight, and walks out. Bruce & the E Street Band is obviously meant to be experienced as the 3 1/2 hour balls to the wall performance they give at each show.
Hercules Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Yeah I am a fan. I just think that he is a shell of what he used to be though. I mean, he definitely had a lot of energy, but he kind of made a little bit of a fool of himself up there for the first minute or so. I think "Working on a Dream" was a little out of place. I can understand that he wanted to get that in there for a little bit of promotion, but in order to get a great performance wrapped up in 12 minutes, I think they have a lot better material than that. I love "Born to Run", but it would have been great if he were able to belt out the note. He was pretty out of tune, and pretty much struggling up there. I had no problem with "Glory Days", which I think kind of made the performance. Yet, lead sax on cowbell? Lead sax on cowbell? Come on man, get rid of the big sax section and let the man play. Maybe I'm being a little critical, but that is just it. I just didn't think it was what it could have been, and feel short of what it was supposed to be. With that said, it was definitely better than Rolling Stone and Tom Petty, but nothing close to Prince or U2.
cfc Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 ^I think acoustics seemed to be the biggest problem; either that, or NBC did a really crappy job with the sound (you could hardly hear Springsteen half the time). Springsteen's new album harkens back to the old "Born to Run" days, so I didn't think the new song was out of place. I think all the performers are pretty constrained by the time limits for these halftime shows. All they can do are quick medleys, so there's no chance to build their performance.
gerd.muller Posted February 2, 2009 Author Posted February 2, 2009 i´ve to admit that bruce was really good last night, but, like cfc wrote before, the nbc did a really, really poor job. prince was very good in miami in 2006, to bad you can´t find any good videos of it on youtube. imo, "working on a dream" is a great song, so it fitted real good in the last night´s playlist.
BeemerBoy Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 ^^^ Yeah, I kind of hear what you're saying. I just hope I'm going that strong at 59. I can be overly critical at times too, but last night I just enjoyed it for what it was. They did seem *slightly* off by their standards, but like Chuck said, I think it was due more to the time restraints and crappy acoustics more than anything else. It seemed rushed...and that's definitely not their style. Heck, I've seen him do a twelve minute version of 10th Avenue Freezout. No kidding, I had to hit the restroom when the song started (luckily there was audio in the restrooms at that venue), and when I returned to my seat he was still belting it out! I was surprised they didn't finish with Born To Run though. Either way, I still liked Working on a Dream.
cfc Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 ^Yeah, they dropped a lyric in "Born to Run." Much rather watch an aging Bruce (who is pretty damned energetic at 59) than an aging Mick Jagger (who has always looked like hell--although I do like some of the Stones' albums, like "Sticky Fingers" and "Some Girls").
Hercules Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I totally get what you guys are saying, and I agree. It was rushed, and it wasn't really their style. And yes, I think NBC had a lot to do with it also. Overall, NBC did a very poor job with the entire event, not just the halftime, but I will save that rant for another thread. I just don't think that anyone brought their A game last night. I understand that it is rushed, but they had so much time to prepare for it all. Things probably went wrong, but I just think it all could have been a little better.
Speeddeamon128 Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 My favorite half-time show was the Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Nelly, and Mary J. I also enjoyed Paul McCartney.
Hercules Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 ^Yeah, they dropped a lyric in "Born to Run." Will you walk with me out on the wire?/Cause baby I’m just a scared and lonely rider/But I gotta know how it feels/I want to know if love is wild/girl I want to know if love is real
Meteornotes Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 So here's a fun little game you can play at home (we were doing this during the halftime yesterday): pick a band to play the superbowl half time that released their first album in the last twenty years or so. The only requirements are a great live presence, and has actual musical talent (which eliminates most of the American Idol/processed pop crap that clogs the airwaves). Our consensus picks: Green Day and Metallica. dt
BeemerBoy Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Pearl Jam (although I wouldn't want 'em to do it).
Wes Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Foo Fighters, even though Im not a fan, have a great live show and fit well into the type of mainstream rock the Superbowl attracts. Radiohead would own but they're too heady and abstract for homogenized halftime music.
gerd.muller Posted February 2, 2009 Author Posted February 2, 2009 1. jamiroquai - their live-presence is amazing!!!! 2. coldplay - yes, very british, but the live performance of "clocks" is awesome!!!
KPfreak519 Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 My picks would be either Metallica or Red Hot Chili Peppers. Although RHCP would be much more likely because they seem to have a wider appeal to most audiences, pretty much everyone I know enjoys them but not many I know enjoy Metallica.

Wes Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 ^ God, that's so depressing. MJ was such a good entertainer on top of being a brilliant song writer. Why'd he have to turn out to be such a crazy creep? PS: If anyone doesn't think the drums and bass on Billie Jean is one of the best produced backing beats ever, you are lying or deaf.
Mechanic Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 I had the privilege(?) of seeing that performance live in person. MJ was an amazingly talented and energetic performer at one time. It really is a shame that he developed such an attraction to prepubescent boys (and God only knows what else).
alpengeistdude321 Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Radiohead would own but they're too heady and abstract for homogenized halftime music. Lol, I would love to see Radiohead do the halftime show and play "Treefingers". That would make my life complete.

I have never agreed with anything more in my life. Michael Jackson = best performer ever Billie Jean = best background ever
