sfkk339 Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 The Zoom Flume, the sturdy wooden waterslide that stood 50 feet above Coney Island’s Sunlite Pool for more than three decades, has been smashed to pieces. Make way for the Twister. On Memorial Day weekend, Coney Island will open what president Vic Nolting calls “the biggest single project we’ve done” at the pool – a $2 million, four-slide structure that nearly triples the length of its predecessor. The Zoom “was huge – it was really the first major waterslide in this part of the country,” Nolting said. “It had served the park well, carried millions and millions of riders, but the weather and the elements and the water were hard on it.” The Twister, named after a covered roller coaster that operated in Coney Island in the 1920s, will handle three times as many riders as the Zoom, Nolting said, and offer four different experiences. Two of the Twister’s slides are designed for bodes, the other two for inflatable tubes. Altogether they’ll twist through 1,400 feet of fiberglass channels. “We’re darned excited,” about the new ride, Nolting said. Construction of the Twister is set to begin in the spring and finish in time for Coney Island’s 2009 opening on Memorial Day weekend. Demolition of the Zoom – which, a press release notes, was built in 1977, when Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life” was a No. 1 hit – is complete. robbalvey Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 That's cool. I like slide towers like this. --Robb
MixedDrink Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Not the biggest fan of water slides in general, but this look's like something I might want to ride, with potentially high capacity. I hate lines.
daisy Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 I'm glad to see some work being put into Coney. I was afraid that it would take ages for a half-assed development to appear but this looks promising. Man, it's such a shame about Astroland being gone. For sure if I had a few mill in the bank I'd have bought Break Dance and Top Spin!
Cygnus12 Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 For a second I thought this was about Coney Island, NY as well. I was like "what?! They smashed the log flume and they're adding a ride?! What?!" lol
thrillgeek Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Renovation at Coney Island is always a good sign.
sixflagsguy5 Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 ^^ Yeah same here. I was like ok, not a good idea. I don't feel like getting mugged while I'm in my bathing suit. Sounds cool though. I'll probably swing by there for the coaster when I go to KI.
FLIPDUDE Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Yup, I got confused from the title as well. I am sad to hear that the old waterslide is gone. I remember when we arrived there on the Midwest trip last year I was in compelte shock to see it since I never even heard of a wooden waterslide before. It might be higher capacity, but as far as I'm concirned the park just got a whole lot less unique. Maybe if it was as tall it would be a fair trade but before the replacement I wanted to go into the waterpark - now I wouldn't look twice in it's direction.
daisy Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 OK I am dumb. Ignore what I said about wanting to buy Break Dance and Top Spin.
Reon Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Great to see that Coney's getting a new slide complex, but I'm still sad that the old slides had to bite the dust....I can't wait for our next ride expansion, but I guess it can wake. We DID get a viking ship, a Eurobungy, and a kiddy ride this year after all...
restoca Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 If they jam it up against the Cyclone it can look just like AstroWorld did in the mid 90s. (...It was an eyesore.)
Gav Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 ^How many replies will this thread get with people thinking this is being built at the Coney Island in New York? As for the slides, well they seem pretty standard fare to me...Probably really only of interest to locals.
Reon Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 The thing is that Coney Island Ohio needs the water rides. It's famous for it's Sunlite Pool, but there aren't that many slides in the area. This addition will make it more of a water park than a freakishly huge pool.
jamesdillaman Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 ^^ Since when is Coney Island Ohio of any interest to people besides locals, they even advertise it as just being a cheap alternative to KI, with family rides and "one giant pool". It isn't like anybody drives 3 hours to Cincy to go to Coney Island... That being said, this will be a good addition. If they get a couple water slides, they can tap into the locals market currently dominated by the Beach waterpark. -James Dillaman
