Sue Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Does anyone happen to know why Top Gun at Carowinds is closed this weekend? It's listed on their website as being closed on 9/15 and 9/16. There's a chance we might go the following weekend, but we probably won't bother if Top Gun isn't operating.
Coasterlvr_nc Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 I'm not a hundred percent sure, but i think its just some preventative maintinance, it will probably only be closed on those dates listed, however I am not positive so dont take my word for it.
All Clear Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Because they suck? I'm glad you posted that. When I check a park website before going, I usually only look at the calendar. I would have been supremely annoyed this weekend if I hadn't known beforehand that TG would be closed. Now it's a little up in the air about whether I'll go or not. I'm missing a couple of credits from there (including backward Thunder Road, which I see will also be closed)... Top Gun is really the only ride I was truly looking forward to.
Coasterlvr_nc Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 your not looking forward to the flyers? you insult me! J/K
All Clear Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 I have never done the whole flyers thing. But for you, I will try. My trip to Carowinds is officially back on, Top Gun or no. Robbie "to be honest, flyers scare me" Crockett
DarkStitch626 Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 your not looking forward to the flyers? you insult me!J/K Oh shut up Collin LOL!. We all know your a flyers fanboy as much as I. As for you Robbie..The flyers are great if you know how to snap'em. It does take some trial and error. One ride you might be bottomed out. The next. As high as the flyers will let you go. Its really fun to go the first rotation with the fin out then as you pass the spot you started at start putting the fin inward then gradually you'll start getting up higher and bang before you know it, your snapping.
Coasterlvr_nc Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 caught red handed Well the point is to have fun wether or not top gun is open, it just makes something to look forward to next time! Besides Darkstitch and i have had fun at Carowinds even though top gun was closed so just ride everything else and have fun!
Reon Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Honestly, Top Gun is one of the 3 only worthy coasters at Carowinds (Plus it was my 100th credit ) Seriously though. The only good things there are Top Gun, Borg, and Vortex.
sixflagsguy5 Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 At least they warned you. I had a friend that drove all the way from Universal to Boomers to find their wooden coaster closed!! They said it wouldn't be open for at least three days, so all that drive was for nothing. Hopefully they can get Top Gun running soon with multiple trains.
All Clear Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 I wouldn't have caught it if I hadn't seen it on this board. Instead of posting stuff like that only on the rides page, they should put a note on the calendar like they do for special events. Robbie "considers Borg to be credit whoring" Crockett
Sue Posted September 14, 2007 Author Posted September 14, 2007 I agree that it's not the best place to post it. I normally wouldn't check that page either, but I'm glad that I did. It's also nice that they do at least warn you ahead of time. For us, Top Gun is still the only reason to go. We've already ridden Borg and Vortex and have no need to ride them again. Stand-up and flying coasters are usually a ride once and never again for us. If I had to pick a 2nd best coaster, it would be Hurler. However, those coasters are very hit or miss--either they're running really good or really bad. So, how do you guys consider Hurler to be running this year?
willski Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Honestly, Top Gun is one of the 3 only worthy coasters at Carowinds (Plus it was my 100th credit ) Seriously though. The only good things there are Top Gun, Borg, and Vortex. lol The only coaster worth riding at Carowinds is Top Gun. Borg and Vortex suck something awful. You know your park needs some new attractions when the 2nd best ride is a wild mouse. And what's up with retractable seatbelts on the woodies? They added them a couple years back before the CF aquisition and effectively killed the outbound airtime on Thunder Road (there was none on the return run to be killed). What a mess of a park...

Having one kick ass B&M automatically makes Carowinds a better park than Kings Island. But, at least Kings Island has......oh that's right. Nothing!
Reon Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 ^Sad and true....All we need at KI is a Eurofighter, or an Accellorator. Then we're good. Richochet was horible though. The ops didnt check restraints, trims were on full blast, and there was plenty of line jumpers. Horrible. Jared"Who is FINALLY starting to see how bad KI is."Becker
bgwfreak Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 ^ Ricochet Saturday was running virtually trimless. Honestly, Top Gun is one of the 3 only worthy coasters at Carowinds (Plus it was my 100th credit ) Seriously though. The only good things there are Top Gun, Borg, and Vortex. And the only good coasters at Kings Island are Flight of Fear, Beast at night and uh....nothing else. Your point? You also didn't mention your flyers that we "stole".
Coasterlvr_nc Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Well I went to work today and got a chance to look around top gun, i think i found the culprit for the downtime. This is definately something I have never seen before. Basically the support outlined in red was unbolted laying on the ground, with the ground where the footer lay completely dug up and the footer nowhere to be seen. Picture thanks to www.rcdb.com
All Clear Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Hmm. That doesn't sound like a thing where they'll miraculously finish up and have it running later tomorrow.... I think I'll be skipping Carowinds tomorrow and just plan on trying to get another trip in later this year. Edit: WAIT--they had to work on the footer? Does this mean that Carowinds is sinking now just like Cedar Point??? Thanks a lot, Cedar Fair.
bgwfreak Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Oh noes! Top Gun is sinking like Magnum!!!
Sue Posted September 17, 2007 Author Posted September 17, 2007 Even though their website still only lists Top Gun as closed on 9/15 and 9/16, I just got an e-mail from them saying it will still be closed this upcoming weekend. Guess we won't even bother going. With the Girl Scout Campout, the Christian Music concert, and the best coaster in the park closed, it's a recipe for disaster!
Johnny Upsidedown Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Thanks for the info Sue. I was looking into going this weekend also, but I had read about all the other extra groups that will be at the park. Oh well. Maybe at the end of the month.
Coasterlvr_nc Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Its sinking!!!! Is it really going to be closed next weekend too? that is going to be really bad if it is, especially with the concert on saturday! Its going to be a nightmare that saturday.
kraken613 Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Anyone have pictures of what they are doing? This is really weird!
carolinacaniac Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 That does sound really strange that they would just take a support and remove the footer like that. I wonder if maybe they are trying to redo that footer for some reason?
Eric_Smith Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Maybe the footer was not down far enough and it was moving. Maybe it was not the right type of support. I don't know what, but if it is for safty reasons , I am glad they are doing it.
Coasterlvr_nc Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I talked to the head manager of rides on sunday, He claims at least that maintenance was doing checks of the rides and apparently found a problem with the footer.... something?I'm guessing that this is preventative maintenance, but i could be wrong. Ohh wait! It must've been C3 with ERT on top gun all that excess weight from all of the ACE'rs mustve caused a problem with that footer
