Hi folks. Figured I'd ask this question here, as I believe users on this site may be the most knowledgable about such matters.

I'm planning an extended trip to Cedar Point (if I'm gonna fly 8-9 hours to get there, I'm gonna stay for more than a day or two), and I want to stay nearby, but have been reading some crappy reviews of pretty much all the Cedar Point affiliated hotels. Obviously they have the benefit of an extra hour in the park, but for me this wouldn't outweigh the fact that my room was unclean or the staff were unhelpful.

Does anyone know of a good hotel in Sandusky? Nothing too flashy, all we require is cleanliness and friendly staff.

Well, I know of a good hotel that we stayed at about 5 minutes away from CP in Sandusky. It had alright service, a good breakfeast, and a good pool. I can't remember it right off-hand, but if you could give me some names of hotels you found around the area and that might jog my memory. Anyway, it's not 5 star, but its's not a crap hole either. It's just a good hotel for a good price, that is well worth the money. Hope this helps (so far)!

It also offers shuttle service to and from CP, but if you wanted early entry that wouldn't work. CP offers a Joe Cool club member pass that allows you to get into the park early also. Look into that and also some of their other options as I'm not certain that Joe Cool is the early entery pass. (We had so many different things on our pass that it's too hard to remember).

Cedar Point's hotels really are not all that bad. You could try the cabins at the Lighthouse Point. They are about $150 per night (with an 11.5% room tax per night). My sister stays there every year with her friend and her family, and she never says anything negative about the accommodations, which leads me to assume that the cabins are pretty good. And they are right on the lake!

Where did you read that?

I don't stay anywhere other then Breakers Express, and have had no complaints. It's affordable, clean, nice, and gets you into the park an hour early.

I've stayed there many times, and have never had a bad experience.

^^ Ditto here... it's been a few years, but Breakers Express was along par with a Holiday Inn Express or Comfort Inn. The Breakers and Sandcastle Suites would probably be more in line with a higher end national chain. We never had an issue with cleanliness.

You can also rent some condos/lakefront properties nightly, if you don't mind doing some web searching, but honestly, I think their affiliated hotels/motels are fine.

I was looking around for a hotel for next year when we go, and hotel breakers has rooms in the $111 range, its a couple minute walk to the park, and you get in an hour early. Plus you can use the pools and beach before you check in and after you check out. I will be staying there. Most of my time will be in the park or the beach and marina. So dont care if the view sucks or not from my hotel room.

Thanks for the help so far folks.

To answer the person who asked where I'd read poor reviews, various review sites (TripAdvisor and the like). Guess I should take some of the reviews with a pinch of salt!

In particular, there are LOADS of crappy reviews for Breakers Express (rooms not cleaned, towels never replaced, staff disinterested, noisy teenagers in the hallways until all hours of the night/morning, etc., etc.). Sounds like not all of you would agree with that.

Also many bad reviews about The Breakers (some of the cheaper rooms tiny and tatty and musty smelling, poor service again.).

Obviously, the extra park hour is a big bonus, but it's not essential to me as we plan to be at the park at least three or four days, so should still fit everything in! And like I say, I don't require palatial rooms or endless amenities, I just don't want to book into one of their hotels only to find when I got there that the room wasn't clean or I couldn't sleep due to the noise.

I would welcome your continuing comments on this, and once again, thanks for the replies so far.

Well all hotels are going to have bad experiences from time to time.

But personally, I'd say that the chances of a bad experience at the CP resorts are much less then the normal hotels in Sandusky.

Sandusky hotels can be very hit or miss. And it's hard to tell which are nice, and which are complete dumps.

I've stayed at Breakers 3 times with no problems.

Only other night in Sandusky was at a Howard Johnsons right near Breakers Express and it was dirty, expensive and cramped.

I stayed at a Rodeway Inn close to the causeway and it was OK. The room kind of smelled, but it was OK. My friend swears by the Hojo near the causeway. I think he likes it because it is near a bar.

I've stayed at the Breakers Express and I don't remember any problems. There's not a restaurant onsite, but Sandusky has like 8 million restaurants to choose from. The McDonald's next door has to be the slowest-serving McDonald's in the U.S.!

I am going to assume that you are referring to the Best Western that has the attached Perkins Restaurant and is about a two minute drive to the Cedar Point Causeway.

I stayed there over a Friday and a Saturday night last season and the biggest problem that I faced was that there was no free continental breakfast!

So in a sense, I agree with you on the expensive part, but I disagree with you on the dirty (I found my room to be up to my high standards for cleanliness) and the cramped (I guess that I had a bigger room) parts. Stupid Perkins for being so overpriced even with the 10% hotel discount!!

I guess the alcohol made him not notice the rock hard beds? I stayed at that Hojo once, and realized that close to the causeway doesn't mean the hotel will be better.

At least with BE you know what to expect. I don't trust any of the other hotels in the area. Too many of them are complete crap.

Yeah, I figured this might be the case. I know nothing about the area, which is why I hoped to get a recommendation for a Sandusky hotel from you guys. Sounds like most of you think B.E. is a perfectly acceptable option.

My bad, it was a HoJo - just corrected the original post

Nikki and I have stayed at the Hojo Express right near the causeway entrance, and yeah it's pretty ghetto. It's incredibly cheap, but horribly ghetto. There's another cheap spot around there... EconoLodge I think? Also quite ghetto, but again, one of the cheaper places you can find in the area.

Last time we went, we stayed at the Knight's Inn about five minutes from the causeway... it's a bit further east than most of the other hotels, but as you're driving along the road to the causeway you'll pass it. We ended up spending awhile there as we got sick and had to miss a day of coasters, so we're pretty familiar with the room. It had a fridge and microwave, so if you're staying for a couple days, that can be handy. Depending on when you're going, the rates for it will probably be quite good. I know when we go to CP next month, we're staying there at around $57CAD per night, so it's pretty affordable.

My family and one of my friends went to Cedar Point and stayed at Hotel Breakers. We were there for three nights and thought it was worth the extra money to stay there. My family aren't the kind of people who can walk around amusement parks all day multiple days in a row. So while my friend and I went to the amusement park they slept in and kind of relaxed on the beach and swam at the pool. It was a great place to stay because we could kind of do whatever we wanted the days we were there.

The room we stayed in was pretty nice. It was a suite since there was 6 of us. The service was good and we didn't really have any complaints.

The hour early access to the park IMO was a little overrated. It may have been just how we handled it though. We entered through the Wicked Twister gate instead of the Magnum gate because we didn't know about that gate. We were wondering how we had like a 30 minute wait for Maverick after we jogged from Wicked Twister to Maverick. But we were able to get on Maverick and Millennium Force in that hour. Waiting about 35 minutes for Maverick and 10 for Millennium Force. But I don't think you can really do wrong with Hotel Breakers.
