Its a thermal-mirror, which shuts off to reveal the dummy vehicle behind it.

For the part where everyone turns into ghosts, I believe its some sort of real-time infrared sensor they have, or at least I remember it being something similar.

i thought it was pixie dust... probably supplied by Tinkerbell.

if its a live person or something its called 'Casper's Ghost' or something. basically, a piece of glass is place at a 45* angle to the audience with an actor/actress standing behind it. it is well lit as this will not prevent glare.

there is a secret room in line with the glass where another actor/actress is hidden with the 'after effects' as it were

When the 'effect' happens, the light where the actor/actress dims down and the hidden room is lit, thus turning the glass into a mirror.

its quite conventional and is very effective as it was developed in the 1960's i believe...

it is not the peppers ghost trick as it need a separate room for it to work but as said above, you can walk right around the idol in the pre show

the only way i think is if it just droped into the thing its standing on?

After watching the video my guess is that when the back wall goes black, the idol then blends in with the wall so you can't see it, and then it "disappears" into that stand thing it sits on, then they flash the light on it, and everyone is like OMGz!

They used that basic idea of the object masking into the background for one of the shows at USH's HHN where they had this dorky little thing, a black sheet, and ghosts, anyways, they had a bunch of people in black suits running around in front of the sheet, and for the most part you couldn't even tell that there were people there unless the light hit them a certain way. After watching the video, I'm almost positive the same idea has been applied to the "Dissappearing Monkey Idol"

And Disney would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those meddling Geeks on the Internet!

The statue is too large to be dropped into the column it stands on, so that's not it either.

It really is an awesome stunt, and all I could ever think of was a really good hologram, but I was decidedly under the impression that those are more science fiction than science fact right now.

It's done by the sheer evil dark magic of the Shiriki Utundu. Little known fact, the Shiriki Utundu is Swahili for "Idol that looks like Stitch."

In all seriousness, my guess is that the idol isn't there at all. It's not Pepper's Ghost either. I think it's actually painted into the wall behind it and when certain light hit it's shown and when that light goes off, it disappears.
