onewheeled999
The most dangerous thing on my soon-to-be-former school is a balance beam. My class once (I can't remember which grade) had to do this obstacle course around the playground, and during the part where we had to walk across the balance beam, I fell... straight down. Talk about pain!
steel
Whoa, I didn't realize you were in 6th grade. Seventh grade is *almost* as much fun as 8th grade. You'll love it.
Calvin
^And then you go to high school, become cynical, get a scummy office job, and die. When I "graduated" from elementary school, anything involving running or bodily contact was banned. Red Rover, Tag, Soccer, Wallball, banned banned banned banned. I remember that we resorted to jumping off of the plastic play structures for fun (those things were a good fifteen feet tall). I think a lot of adults forget that, for the most part, kids are made of rubber. It frightens me to think of what these kids of today will become when they graduate, and have been pampered. Suddenly tossed into the meat grinder, their jobs being overtaken by sharp-brained immigrants who actually feel the need to work. Emotional shut-ins, not because they lost at soccer or broke their arm on the slide but because they weren't allowed to. Suddenly, I have the urge to create a rock opera slash cautionary tale about the dangers of the "bubble boy" syndrome...
Calaway Park
Hahahahhahahahahahhahaha!!!!!!!! Go Canada Lmao, we still play British Bulldog here! Full contact football, soccer, etc. I guess my summer camp would never be accepted in the US either! We played tonnes of full contact sports there, in one week there were like 2 broken legs haha. I guess this country's not quite as sue happy. ^And then you go to high school, become cynical, get a scummy office job, and die. I love your outlook on life _______________________________________________________________ Onewheeled999, you might have a good time in grade 7. Or you might have an awful time. The whole basis there pretty much depends on how organized you are. I hope you get a school like mine where you can leave campus at lunch. We're allowed to go anywhere we want to four the hour we get off. Grade 8's awesome though. You'll like it more.
Luxo
When I first saw this, I thought it was for the deodorant. Colin C I wish they would ban Tag and Axe, then I could actually breathe when I get on the bus.

I'm still struggling through closed-campus lunch! IMO, 7th grade was more fun than 8th, but BEING an 8th grader is a heck of a lot more fun than being a sevvie. Anyway, I think we were discussing tag...
tngdiablo
What's next, kickball? How about getting rid of swings from playgrounds since a kid could get hit by another kid's foot. It's sad that this is what has happened because everyone is so sue happy. Funny thing about the swings, you don't need to ban them to get rid of them. I was talking with my boss over the summer (I worked at my co-op apt.'s pool) and he is also the Chairman of the Board so he handles all the stuff for the apartment complex. So, we were talking about why all the new playgrounds that they put in didn't have any swings. Well, he said that when he was talking with the playground manufacturer (the largest in the nation), they told him that they hadn't installed new swings in roughly 5 years. The insurance companies just don't want to insure them. Too many potential injuries. That's also why the ground material in new playgrounds is so much fluffier. As for the tag, its retarded. I think its ridiculous that parents can sue for their kids being kids.
Calvin
^My aunt would have an awful lot of interesting things to say about that. It is true that insurance companies are starting to run this country like the train companies and oil companies did way back when.

onewheeled999
My school would never let us play Red Rover, they're so darn protective. I can't wait till 7th grade, my sister (8th grade) tells me that it's much better. I have seen on television how celebrities say it was 'The worst years of their life', but my sister says that only happens when you're a gossipy, "OMG!! Jerry is thinking about going out with Beth?!?! EVERYBODY'S GOT TO KNOW THIS!!!" kind of person.
steel
^Well, that's exactly what middle school is, no matter what. Junior high now is way better than junior high 20 years ago. You are much better prepared now. I remember being scared stiff my first day of 7th grade. I couldn't even eat lunch. But you get used to it right away. I can't even imagine having the same teacher for every class anymore. You will be teased by 8th graders when you are in 7th grade, but if you don't pay attention to it, you'll do fine. Just remember that you'lll be in 8th grade eventually. And the 8th graders will get their just desserts when they are tormented for being a Freshman the next year anyway. And remember that your sister is just starting 8th grade. I thought I would absolutely hate my 8th grade year at this time a year ago, but it gets really enjoyable pretty fast. But I think this thread is supposed to be about Tag, and possibly Chuck Norris.
goleafsgo
sucks to be you guys. I lived in England until i was 13, and we were allowed to play tag/dodgeball... pretty much anyhting we wanted...
onewheeled999
^^ I'm used to being teased at school. I'm one of those Straight-A's, ahead of the class, etc. kinds of sixth graders, which brings up a lot of teasing from a certain group of people, but I won't get into racism... they're just like that. steel
I dodn't think I had it all that bad. We were allowed to play pretty much everything until everyone stopped caring in seventh grade. We're still allowed to play Red Rover.

shesaidboom
Things like this make me so mad. It's not even just about kids getting fat due to the lack of physical activity. Kids get hurt, it's part of being a kid, but apparently that's too hard for many parents to understand and they get sue happy when their kid so much as scrapes their knee. Kids NEED to hurt themselves, it helps them learn to deal with many life problems. Shit happens, you deal with it, get over it and get back up on your feet. My mom is a grade one teacher and a kid in her class skinned her knee a few days ago, she cried for an HOUR and refused to play anymore. I remember skinning my knee as a kid and maybe crying for a minute before getting back up and playing. I can understand not wanting kids to get severely injured and taking certain measures to avoid that, but I think it's being taken WAAAAAAAY to far. Another problem besides just banning games like tag is that they keep revising playground equipment to the point where it's not even fun anymore. When I was little the park near my house had this awesome wooden climber with twisty slides, monkey bars, fire poles, a cat walk and all kinds of things. Now there's a 5 foot tall plastic thing in its place. Climbers are a place for kids to explore, develop skills, and face their fears. I used to be terrified of the cat walk when I was really young [it was really high up and was only 2 wooden planks thick], but I eventually faced my fear and went across and it was a huge deal for me since I was like 7. Kids now don't get a chance to do things like that. They don't get to face their fears because there's nothing for them to fear! Kids are going to grow up being unable to deal with pain, fear or anything of the sort since nobody gives them the chance to when they're young. Even a game like tag gives them skills/experiences that will actually help them in the future. It sounds silly, but it's true. Kids learn through play. I can literally go on and on about this for hours, too much Early Childhood Education experience. Sorry But like many of you have said, next step..plastic bubbles. KrakenKing
I too think this is completely over the top. As most of you said, a kid has to be a kid. It's just sad that in todays world (Especially in the U.S.) a person can sue over something so stupid... and chances are that they'll probably win. Tag and Hide and Seek were two of my favorite games as a child, I even had my fair share of scrapes and bruises from it, but I lived. The next step: "No Physical Education in school, No sissors in art classes, no staplers, children have to be wrapped in packaging bubbles..." ... Common, really... onewheeled999
Shesaidboom: I couldn't have said it better myself. My school's playground is this 10-foot-tall Little Tykes playground, with monkey bars, a fire pole, two slides, a little bouncy bridge, and one of those pole things where 2 bars are diagnal, and you can slide down them. We weren't even allowed on this thing in 5th grade, since we had recess with the 2nd graders. We were told "Let the little kids have the playground, you'll just hurt them and be mean to them!", which was entirely untrue. EBL: That's society today... Wow, it's amazing how much I can babble about nothing...
onewheeled999
Sorry to bring up the dead, but my school has gone to a new low. Now we can't even RUN on the playground, we have to do the same thing for all the recess, and we can't even do overhands in 4-Square. At least there's just 3 more months of this. I feel so sorry for those little first graders who have to stay here for 5 more years.
Angry_Gumball
Why don't we get things over with and put these poor kids into protective inflatable bubbles so they don't get hurt whatsoever...make it sound proof and visual proof so they aren't exposed to the cruel world. Let's ban everything so we have nothing to sue for. I do remember our dual steel slides we had on our playground...we'd play what we called "Squash the lemon" which basically consisted of one sitting sideways at the end of the slide. Each person would slide down sideways stacking up like tetris blocks until the one at the end would fall off due to too many kids/not strong enough. Sadly, they took our dual slides out...It also made a great waterslide after a day's rain as water would collect at the end of the slide like a pool...Perfect for our "Squash the lemon" game. Lastly, I remember chicken fight on the monkey bars, which that game was banned.
the sound
Woah, that's really screwed up! I can't imagine going through school without tag. They only thing they banned us from playing at our school was tackling games and brandy. Brandy is tag style Game, but with a ball.
