So how much do you give to charity each year? You should consider many avenues of giving on this topic....in-kind donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the American Cancer Society or Give Kids the World, memberships to PETA or the WWF (that's not wrestling anymore ), disaster relief organizations like the Red Cross, winning "first ride" auctions for new coasters on Ebay (which usually benefit a local charity), buying state lottery tickets (most money goes towards education, or so they say), and even just giving loose change to The Shriners at a busy intersection.

Also, feel free to list some of your favorites that you have given to.

I've donated a few bucks to Katrina victims and 9/11 victims. That and the occassional church visit which I donate a dollar in the collection tray.

I give almost $100 dollars a year to some weird ass group that is dedicated to preserving coasters

Also:

Goodwill (at least $500 in clothing donations a year)

Red Cross (through work)

and a couple locals

I don't believe in organizations trying to capitalize off the generocity of others.

I'm more likely to give a bum a few bucks or some spare food than to give money to Red Cross. Therefore I vote "zero". I could consider ACE a donation, but besides the fact that I don't actually pay for it myself, I'm not sure how much of it really goes towards the useful causes.

I try to give whenever I can for various causes. I got my reimbursement check from my college two days ago.. of $1,257.00 I gave $1,000 to the cancer research program at my mom's work: The Childrens Hospital. Sometimes I give a little to the homeless on the streets, but 9 times out 10...that money is going to either drugs or alcohol.

Thanks to those who replied. To those that didn't, well, you do realize that I didn't need to put the "nothing" category on the poll, right? 125+ views and only 15 votes speaks volumes.

I dont donate money.

I donate my time and services to Special Olympics of Colorado and National Sports Center for the Disabled. Each year I spend 3 days a week during the winter teaching disabled kids and adults how to ski. Which comes out to 24 hours a week of teaching. I help plan the Denver Area Winter Games though Special Olympics and we meet once every 2 weeks for 3 months for 2 to 3 hours a night. And then the 2 day events.

I feel that My time spent is worth more then giving money.

Honestly, I don't feel like posting the amount I donate because I'm not a boastful giver. I think donating then saying "look what I did" is just vain. I like to be humble, do what I can, and let my actions speak for themselves without calling attention to myself.

^^ Yes, but I wasn't twisting your arm to tell us the amount. That's why I created the poll. That made it anonymous. I do appreciate the fact that you give, though.

Also, as someone else mentioned, time is always just as valuable as money in many cases. That is also very admirable.

I voted in the $1-$99 category. I've never actually had enough money to donate, although I always donate to the charity of the deceased's choice instead of or in addition to giving flowers, which probably puts me up to about $80 or so for this year so far. Excepting that though, I've never been able to just donate money, simply because I don't have any! Once I have a steady income after I graduate, there are four or five charities I'd like to donate for, two of which I've done fundraising and volunteer work for in the past.

As for the people who mentioned giving money to homeless people, yup, I've done that too, although very rarely, and only to one or two whom I see on a very regular basis and know don't use the money for alcohol or drugs. I will quite often buy cheap coffee and sandwiches for them if I can, especially during winter.

$1 to $99 , once I get out of college I'm sure I'll donate more.

I do participate in runs/walks for Children's Hospital Boston, so I too donate more time than money. I have raised at least several thousand dollars over the years for CMN but it's not my money...
