TPR Front Page RE-Design Contest!
Chroniq replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
One of the things I personally dislike about Iloverides design is the use of grey as a sub background. I think that's why jcrouse's design pops more for me. -
Wow. Just saw this on the news. The thing that blows my mind is how new this ship is. It was built in 2006 and is basically a copy of carnival's ships being built at the time . It had all the latest navigation, depth finding, and collision avoidance systems as well. Typically European ships are not new builds and instead are ships that are transferred from the US after 10-20 years in service and I expected to click through and see this. Like one of the above posters mentioned a total loss of power could be the culprit or at the very least loss of power to the pods/stabilizers that are turned during the docking process. I once was on a bridge tour of a new ship where the captain proclaimed something to the effect of, "Even if I wanted to beach the ship, the system simply won't let me" Crazy stuff. Hopefully this doesn't effect people's feelings about cruises as they are one of the safest ways to travel.

^^Even though I've always been a fan of the current tag line, I have to say the design of this new one is amazing. -Chris "so much win going on in the above design" Connolly -

I love the clean and simple design that so many people did for the top part of the page (like iloverides, dougmjr etc. or even my design on page 3), but I think the best design compromise is something like angrygumball has done. You've got the nice clean look at the top of the page, but you are able to scroll down for additional content (since the site is SO content heavy). -

What is TPR's design language? What would make you think TPR if you saw a new site but couldn't read any words or make out the pictures? To me, it's the black background with the RGB colors and gadzoox font logo. That's something most people that have visited the site before would immediately recognize. But since TPR is known more for the content than the design (pov's, trip reports, the latest news, lively forum discussions, the park index and the game exchange) is the current "design language" (other than the logo) really that important to the site? I'm not sure either way. -chris "just putting this out there for discussion" connolly -

As drop downs go, it definitely works. I also like the idea they limited it to only 6 main topics with many subtopics available in the drop down. I personally think 6 is the maximum amount of main topics you should have on a drop down bar. Edit: I'm a fan of almeres drop down box and how it goes horizontal and doesn't block any other graphics when expanded. It's also a cool way of letting people know that once you mouse over an item, it will expand with additional topics (by being expanded by default) -

Can anyone think of a site where the "drop down" menus are down correctly? I just spent 5 minutes checking out all the sites I make a point of hitting each day and I couldn't find one that either had drop downs or had drop downs that I actually used. Edit: another thought about drop downs. I think they should "expand" without a click compared to drop downs on a pc where you have to click to engage. Also drop downs when using a tablet? That's always weird for me. Is it with in the realm of possibility that TPR could have a tablet optimized site and a traditional site? I guess that's more of a question for Robb & Elissa. Edit 2: Regarding the whole widescreen versus 4:3 design issue- According to wikipedia, Steam did a survey of all their users in 2011 7.04% had 4:3 monitors 11.28% had 5:4 monitors with a high enough resolution to display a website nicely in the widescreen format. 81.68% had 16:9 or 16:10 monitors. I wonder if those statistics are comparable to TPR's users. But like Nicole mentioned- The ipad is 4:3 -

Jerrykoala2112 and I were talking about what existing sites might be good inspiration for a TPR redesign and he came up with this. It's graphically heavy, but clean, dynamic, interesting, and has enough places to click for a site as rich with content as TPR I'm as surprised as you are, but, yes, billboard.com. -

Even though I can't design, I'm always happy to share opinions whether correct or incorrect. Do you guys have any stats for the click through ratio on posts that are more than 5 deep (ie. 5 posts older than the newest post)?. I'm a huge fan of clean design and a trend has been to remove any links that have less than a 10 percent click through on the main page of a site. I see so many designs that have links that seem to exist just for the sake of having links. Another thought is the fact that if you have youtube, plus an html5/flash app on the main page that might make for a relatively heavy client. TPR 2.0 could be radically different? maybe? I was thinking something that had many less links and a super clean design so the very casual tpr member (maybe someone that has never even registered) doesn't have to think about what to click on. The other thought I had was the focus on other parts of the site that are so comprehensive but maybe less visited than the forum. Should the park index/review area have more prominence as it's now more comprehensive? -chris "I'd probably disregard this post" connolly -

^No worries, I can barely write my name legibily let alone think up slick design. Hopefully some of the "real" creative people who helped out on the Club TPR logo lend a hand on this. I'll save my photoshopping for the next random TPR contest! -

Sorry. Just thought it would be cool to put a different idea out there and I'm just trying to help, but apparently design isn't my forte. I leave it to the people with a better eye for this sort of thing. -

I went back to the drawing board and came up with this just for fun. More of a just for fun thing as Doug's entry above is more "TPR themed" Edit: I should have mentioned that this was not something I stole off DougMJR (with the Jaws logo, etc.) it just turned out that way -

Patrick while I'm certainly not a web designer, I think most people design for 1024*768 even though 85 percent of people have higher screen rez these days. -

Also wondering for clarification with what Doug mentioned. Can we provide a mockup via photoshop and if that selection is chosen TPR's web designers will implement it or are you also looking for code? Edit: To break the ice, I came up with this this. It's essentially the familiar TPR everyone knows with a few different features and modernization. The top left hand corner is a TPR video. The top right is a HTML based revolving slide show to allow more announcements while taking up less screen real estate.. The update photos are enlarged and the text is put inside them to grive more prominence to the photos. The background is spaced enough to allow a beautiful image which can either change randomly or be manually changed to coinside with an important update. (stole this from one of the TPR DisneySea updates-Thanks Hanno and the other one from Chadster) The usual disclaimer, etc would be at the bottom and the social media contacts could flank the tag line like before. Just another variant to show the flexibility of having a nice background image. -

Wes- whether this turns out to be true or not, I'm impressed that you brought a completely new idea to the table. Sounds like a good idea and something that can be easily implemented in the new overlay. -

I'm always out of the loop (pun intended), so I have to ask; What effects are they including in Radiator Springs Racers that could possibly be implemented out on the test track?
