You ned to go into the side view to make a lift becase it shows vertical rec movement rather than lateral. Also to che a node hieght double click on it or select it and press "n".

Here's an idea. Make the ride mannually operated ant stick some traction tires at the bottom of the lift to make sure the whole thing engages.
