Hersheypark (HP) Discussion Thread

I am curious as to how that piece of track for the drop will connect with the lift support. It's looks rather bizarre and the track that is already up is pretty close to the tower already. -

This may just be me, but I don't feel like screamscape is a great source for 'rumors' and such. Everybody that works at CP has heard this rumor (and the Dippin Dots guy definitely confirmed it ) but still, I know the place and people tend to give out false information to send you on the wrong track on purpose. Just from managers alone, I have heard 3 separate rumors: a B&M dive machine in place of Antique Cars, a GCI woodie in place of/in front of DT, and an Intamin prefab replacing Mean Streak (these were all separate rumors). From the people I've talked to, it seems like people are just so desperate for a new coaster, they are making things up now. -

I agree. It resembles other B&M hypers a lot more than it does Millennium Force. I also don't understand why there would be much cause for complaint with having 2 sets of trim brakes on this ride. Nitro has 2 as well and it's considered one of the greatest hypers out there. Not that they even effect the experience that much, which I'm thinking they wouldn't on this ride either. However, I did find that there were cases where they did, such as on Diamondback. We'll see what happens. -

My closest park that could barely compete with CP is a 10 hour drive from my house (SFOT). I don't see what you have to complain about...if I lived an hour from Cedar Point I wouldn't give a crap about having any other parks close by. Count your blessings, dude. -
Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

Agreed, the 'coaster wars' have basically been over for a while. In my opinion the number of coasters isn't what makes a park at all, and I think a lot more people are starting to see it that way. When all coasters at CP come to mind, the one with lowest ridership/popularity is most likely Mine Ride. Why isn't anybody talking about tearing that down? It's not that people go specifically to ride certain coasters, it's that a fair amount of people actually enjoy them, yes even Mean Streak. It is rough, but that's the image the coaster as a whole portrays anyway. The only reason there are so many coasters people go to Cedar Point to specifically ride, is because it's Cedar Point. They break records and make great coasters. They're not just going to tear another one down because it's not at the same level as the others, that's ridiculous. Also, to me, the Voyage was much rougher than Mean Streak, and it still ranks as my favorite wooden roller coaster. -

No, not seasonal, but very necessary. And yes I agree, it will most likely be around for a while longer. It still brings in enough riders to be considered popular to keep; just as all the coasters most enthusiasts dislike do. I think it has a lot more to do with the integrity of the wood that has been there for so long than making the coaster smooth. Hence why they are replacing a great deal of the structure as well. Yes! This is the same reason I dislike it most of the time. Minus those lucky trimless rides every now and then... -

^Yes, we are aware, but routine maintenance can still improve the quality of a coaster. The track they replaced last year has really helped as well. -

I personally don't think Mean Streak is that rough, comparing to all other wooden coasters I have been on...the thing is, the trims are what help the roughness; and to me, the trims make the ride so slow it's not enjoyable. I have ridden without trims, and it's a much more fun experience, but that's when the pain really gets you. It's just a win-lose situation both ways. I am hoping this re-track is going to really help it out. -

^It's a new technology that sees coasters in the future! I must say, this is going up mighty quick! I am pretty happy about this, seeing as the Leviathan Bash will be first on my summer list! -

^Apologies, I thought the term used would refer to proxys sensing rollbacks...I've never heard those sensors called that, but I know of their existence. I doubt they would be needed at said location in Skyrush. -

Both types of sensors have different applications, so it really depends on the operation of the coaster. Wicked Twister utilizes photo-eyes for more accurate speed control while Raptor utilizes them as a back up safety system for the blocks (both relatively old, but the only coasters I actually know of unfortunately) As far as I know, this is simply determined by operator. Coasters need to have a method of actually stopping trains in the blocks in case of early dispatch in order to perform daily testing of the blocks. Also, I doubt a simple block coaster like this would need 'rollback proxys' (I don't even know any coasters that have these, especially at the bottom of a turn) since in the scenario the train happens to roll back, the block will still be considered "occupied." I also highly doubt proxys at this location would be for speed sensory unless retractable trims are installed somewhere within the circuit. Simple circuit coasters sense overspeed by timing the blocks from beginning to end rather than having sensors within the circuit to simply 'sense the speed.' I am not ruling out the possibility that proxys would be placed there, I just don't see any logical reason they would be. In fact, given this will be a coaster with lift components similar to I305, the horizontal location of that bar would suggest that it is for proxys rather than brakes. It's just very bizarre. -

Yeah, B&M usually mounts their proxys either right on the inside of the rails or on little steel beams they just tie to the track. Usually. -

coasterlover420 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I think Intamin just puts those there as a "just in case" situation for when the testing proves that the train is in fact going faster than planned. It is a lot easier to just screw fins into an existing rail than to have to weld a rail onto the track during the testing phase. And while proxys seems more likely to be put on a bar like that, they do not seem likely to be put at that section of track. There's no point considering it is right smack in the middle of a block. Proxys only need to be positioned at the beginning and end of a block. -
Nürburgring launched coaster

I'm pretty sure S&S began with pneumatic launch technology. Coasters and launch towers. Also, Intamin hydraulic launch coasters are far from reliable. -

^Also, it is banked over 90 degrees, and if they evacuate, one person would unbalance the train and it would roll down anyway. -

I also don't see how a.)the coaster could stop at the top of the curve and b.)how it could possibly be evacuated from there. I mean if a Top Thrill Dragster scenario ever occurs, just do the same thing...push it. -

^^I feel like the absence of light really adds to the experience for Magnum. Looking out onto the dark lake while plunging 200ft is quite an experience to me! Either way, one of my favorite things to do is ride Magnum in the back and just look back towards all the lights during the drop. Lots of fun! -

It may only be a bunch of lights, but it is probably one of my favorite things to do at night at the Point. IMO it beats the fireworks show by a long shot. That and taking a walk along the beach (minus the bugs). -

^It does. They are pretty much the design Intamin uses for it's brakes. The trim on Leviathan looks like the side-magnets though, same as all hypers with magnetic brakes.
