Underrated Coasters?
I Like Theme Parks. replied to Yero's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I really agree with this! The first half is really fun, even though after the cobra roll it's pretty boring. I actually think it's quite a bit better than the Dark Knight at SFNE! -

In an e-mail I got after the Coastin' by the Ocean event, they said that they were still planning to begin major renovation of the Nor'Easter, and in the video they said that people have their last chance to ride it "as it stands today". So unless they decided to make a drastic change in plans, I'd be cautiously optimistic. -
I had a good visit to the park today. My dad's friends from work were going to the park, and they haven't rode a coaster in 10 years. So they had us show them around. They only wanted to get on the Joker, Kingda Ka, El Toro and Nitro, but they didn't get to Nitro since they had to leave early. I think they may have been pushed to the limit from the front row of Kingda Ka and back row of El Toro right in a row. But they had fun, and I was surprised at what they were able to ride. The park a bit crowded, but not too bad. The operations were kind of bad like normal, except El Toro was running both trains with around one-minute dispatches. Even when a fat guy would get on, it would be less than two minutes! Runaway Mine Train was testing for what seemed like an hour or so, but it never opened and Skull Mountain seemed to be shut down for good the whole day. So there's some maintenance problems, but at least it's not what's going on at SF St. Louis or Elitch Gardens. I stayed from opening to about 3:30. The lines were 20 minutes, except El Toro, Bizarro, Swashbuckler and Batman were 5 minute waits or less. Now onto the ride list: The Joker - This ride delivered once again! At the top I got some violent flips, then in the middle it was hanging upside down most of the time, even on the little bumps which had extreme hang-time, probably approaching -2 gs! Then the final drop is such a perfect way to end the ride. This is an amazing addition, and it's certainly in my top 5 rides at the park! Superman Ultimate Flight - back row - There were butterflies in the station landing on people. That's the only notable thing that happened. Kingda Ka - front row - Fast and awesome! El Toro x 3 - back row - It was running amazing today! It yet again really solidified itself as the best coaster ever. Bizarro - front row - This is probably the best ride I had on it! In the Spring it had a bit of a rattle, but today it was butter smooth! Even the jerky part right before the mid-course brakes wasn't that bad. There were both mist sprayers and fire today. Sawmill Log Flume - This is one of the weaker log flumes I've been on. The scenery is a lot better than I expected, but still nothing outstanding. It's a bit too short, there's nothing that interesting and it's too wet. It's alright. It's hard to believe it's an Arrow flume, since they made some of the best. Swashbuckler - Round-Ups are always fun, but it felt like nothing since a few days ago I rode the most insane Round-Up ever at a tiny carnival. Nitro - back row - It was running really well today. It was wonderful, and the airtime on the last few hills is great. Batman: The Ride x 2 - back, front rows - Forceful as always.

Worst Coaster Ever?

^Holy crap! Back over two seasons ago they were doing the full price, and it was even higher than $45 I think. Honestly it would be questionable if anyone would want to go there even if they PAID THE GUESTS $5. You know you have a great park when nobody goes when the price is $-5! -
Worst Coaster Ever?

I was on a month-long Yellowstone/other landmarks road trip a few years ago with my family and grandparents (that's actually the trip where I went to Cedar Point.) We spent a day in the Wisconsin Dells, and we avoided Mount Olympus. It was way too over-priced, and from the outside it looked like hell. We just ended up riding Avalanche all day, which is an amazing coaster. I've heard that Zeus used to be very good, but that it became horrible. Apparently Hades 360 is even worse than the original Hades coaster now that it's deteriorated. Cyclops is the only good ride left, and even now that coaster doesn't have buzz bars anymore, and it doesn't seem to be taken good care of. So that one's gonna be crap soon. -

The last time I went to the park last August, and I thought the triple-up was awesome! It throws you around a lot and it's insane, and the roughness really adds to that. But even with that being said, having some parts re-tracked would be great. I'm pretty sure it got some track work done a few seasons ago, but Palace-owned parks tend to mke maintaining their wooden coasters a high priority. -
The only time I had to walk off a ride was on It at Morey's Piers in the Spring. I think the reason it didn't fit was that I had so many things in my cargo pockets that it couldn't come down anymore. The closest I've come to not fitting on a coaster was Superman: Ride of Steel at Six Flags America. The lap bars fit on me just fine with plenty of room to spare (although the ankle restraints are horrific), but the seat belt just barely fits for some reason. I've seen plenty of people get the green light on the test seat with no problem, but then not be able to fit on the real train. But I've been losing weight, so I've been fitting a little bit more comfortably in a few rides.

It's obviously far from completely cleaned up and fixed, but at first it was hard to believe that the pictures of the hotel/boardwalk areas and a few others were at Lake Conneaut! I've heard that they're not as terrible this season financially, and it looks like people are coming to the park. So they're trying extremely hard, aka the opposite of what Lakemont is doing. Speaking of Lakemont, if Conneaut continues in this trend, Leap The Dips, Skyliner and their vintage flats would fit in well here.

^I know the VR is supposed to be used on less popular rides, but when I saw the announcement for VR on Ninja I could only imagine how much of a horrible combination it would be! -

Yesterday I rode a Volaire. That was a mistake! -
Zierer vs Miler is actually an interesting comparison. Miler built a coaster nearly to the scale of Impulse, Verbolten, Wicked, etc. over 20 years ago. But instead of completely starting from scratch with the design, they simply scaled up their kiddy coaster design with the funky c-beam track. The result looks wonderfully terrifying and is absolutely on my coaster bucket list. But it didn't really catch on, or allow Miler to grow into a bigger company. Zierer, on the other hand, moved in the direction of more expensive, refined, sturdy designs instead of scaling up Flitzers or Tivolis. This seems to have allowed to them to grow as a company and win bigger contracts more frequently. To get back on topic, I'm surprised the consensus on Gale Force + Miler is "ugly". I think the "mess" of supports looks awesome. Can't wait for the project to finish up. I'll probably do an Atlantic City/Ocean City trip next year as I've never been. What is this large miler you speak of? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I think it's Scandia Screamer, I might be wrong though.

I went to the park for the first time today, and while we had fun, the park isn't very well-run at all. The operations were pretty bad, and the staff wasn't that good. I was there for an ACE event, and there was supposed to be a half hour of ERT on The Cyclone, but it was closed the entire time we were there, and apparently it was broken the past few days, too. So they had everyone walk across to Thunderbolt, but it turned out that it was 15 minutes. But it took too long, so the ERT was basically riding Thunderbolt when the park was open, and they just had the GP wait outside for 10 or so minutes. I appreciate that they tried to fix things, but it was very poorly handled. But a good thing is that Coney Island has a really cool atmosphere, and Luna Park has the perfect feel of a boardwalk park. Except there really needs to be more people cleaning the park. It's hard to do that with a boardwalk park, but it was a bit ridiculous some of the empty cups and garbage that wasn't cleaned up. I had Nathan's earlier in the day, but the only food I had in the park was the lunch we were given for the event, which wasn't good at all. But there's a really good selection of flat rides, so here's the rides I rode: Thunderbolt x 3 - This is a really nice little coaster! There's amazing hang-time on the inversions, and the airtime hills at the end are great. It's a perfect fit for the park. Endeavor - This is a great addition, and I'm glad that these are catching on. It's really forceful. I still like the original enterprises, but this is a good flat ride. Soaring Eagle - This is one of the worst coasters I've ridden. That was to be expected, but I've never been on one of these before. Steeplechase x 2 - I sat in the front and back rows. This is a really enjoyable ride! The launch feels faster than it is, the first turn is pretty forceful and has some strong laterals, and the rest of the coaster is tame, but fun. This is one of the best coasters here. Power Surge - Not as intense as the one at Ocean City MD, but almost just as fun. I love these things. After that, we stopped at Deno's Wonder Wheel park. It's really small, and feels more like an old historic section. We didn't ride much, but it was nice. Wonder Wheel - This is the best ferris wheel ever! It was really fun, and there's really nice views. It's also amazing to look at, and really has a vintage feel. Spook-O-Rama - This was a nice dark ride. There were a lot of effects, and it was a nice old-school dark ride. It's really weird and dumb, but it's just so much fun! So back to Luna Park: Circus Coaster - I got the back row. It's good for a kiddie coaster. Electro Spin x 2 - It's a nice Disk-O. Air Race x 2 - These are amazing! I think I like the smaller one at Casino Pier better, though. Because that one does 18 flips every time, while this one always does shorter cycles. Brooklyn Flyer - This is a smaller star-flyer type ride, but it's just as good as the tall ones in my opinion because the chairs twist a lot and it bounces a lot when it goes up and down, which gives a similar sensation to snapping flyers. The Tickler - It spins really well. Luna 360 - This is an awesome ride. It's forceful and the hang-time is great. WindStarz - Nice family ride. I was able to get it swinging a lot, and it was entertaining. Coney Island Sound - Okay ride with a little bit of airtime. So while there were some really good rides like Thunderbolt, Endeavor, Steeplechase, Power Surge, Electro Spin, Air Race, Brooklyn Flyer and Luna 360, I'm not in a hurry to get back to the park aside from Cyclone. So I'll probably visit Adventureland this fall, and make a quick stop at Luna Park just for the Cyclone. So while the park has a lot of potential, it still has a lot of work to be done.

Take a look at the backlash the park is getting. Yeah, people are mad at the park for this one thing, but that doesn't mean that everyone will boycott them like you are. People can criticize some negative aspects about a park while still loving it. Think about this: if people didn't still care about and love Kings Dominion, do you really think people would be this concerned about their lack of new additions?
-
I wouldn't say that it's because of Kings Dominion. InvadR is supposed to be a family-oriented ride, so Kings Dominion is still more of a thrill park/traditional amusement park. A lot of enthusiasts go to both, a lot of locals go to both, and everyone else would go to one of the other, because they're completely different. One new attraction (or lack thereof) won't make a difference to families wanting a more Disney-style theme park for vacation or a family wanting large flat rides and more coasters.
-
The thing is that Cedar Fair does a few large attractions, but those few are really good. For example, Carowinds is getting an amazing flat ride, plus some family rides and a whole new nicely-landscaped area. Then there's Mystic Timbers at Kings Island, which looks awesome. And each year they do one coaster renovation, so they're turning Vortex into Patriot.
-
Cedar Fair does one new coaster and one coaster renovation every year. It's Mystic Timbers and turning Vortex into Patriot, so I think it's over. The marketing mess was disappointing, but California's Great America needed some kind of coaster project way more than Kings Dominion needs one anyway. All Kings Dominion needs is an RMC (which none of the Cedar Fair parks have), and probably another B&M. Every single other Cedar Fair park except for KI and CP have MUCH bigger holes to fill.

Even though the announcement sucks, it's actually pretty interesting to see what's going to happen. In the In The Loop interview, they said that "you can only fit so many announcements into one day," and they also said that they didn't know if Hurler would open in 2017. Also, Canada's Wonderland could be getting a coaster, and it's still confusing about what's happening to Mean Streak. But then again, Cedar Fair does sort of a trend where they build one large coaster, and then a renovation of another. It's like Fury 325/Rougarou, then Valravn/Ghost Rider. This year could be Mystic Timbers/Patriot. These are less expensive, but it seems like the budget for Cedar Fair parks were spread out a little more evenly this year. So another possibility could be nothing else for any Cedar Fair parks. And also madmax died, so that's alright with me I guess.
